Ok playing a Rogue dual wield (had to restart, long story), I am trying to set it where Cassandra in Melee, Varric is range and Solas is range. Yet for some reason they run within melee range.

Can someone please help me here with the settings on PC to do that?

There aren't any. The AI is awful and there are no tactics to make them less awful. Seriously. I'm not being glib.

Go in the behavior tab and change the Follow Controlled Character...

edit for clarification.

When the behavior is set to Follow Controlled Character, the party member will attack what the controlled character is attacking. This mean, that ranged characters will move in range of whoever you are currently attacking.

So what should it be changed to then, if we want to accomplish what OP is talking about?

Depends on your party composition and play style. It's not a miracle cure for mobs getting pass the tank though.

I have Solas on Defend Cassandra so he targets his barrier at her, I haven't seen him run into melee to throw a spell yet. Nor have I seen Varric run into melee with Follow Cassandra (he attacks her target(s)). I've seen plenty of mobs running up to them to whack them in the face though, but that's a tank aggro problem, not a running into melee.

Also, I always send Cassandra face something at the start of fight to be sure she gets aggro (she will run up to it by herself) and will attack that until it dies then switch to her behavior (which his defend my PC).

Otherwise, there is always the option to disable AI and manage everything by hand.

I now officially hate the tactics system. It's absolutely chaotic. You can't give instructions on who to attack, what skills to use, at what point to use them...I can't count on anybody to use anything under any condition because I have no idea what those conditions are. I try to set preferred conditions etc, but it's all just a crap shoot.

Uhg, the lack of real tactics is honestly making the combat frustratingly un-fun.

While we're on the subject here can someone explain to me why sometimes Allies will use a potion and sometimes they won't? Playing on Hard and I've watched a few of my party members run around at 10% during a fight when I was 8/8 on hp pots. Pots don't have a CD and can be used even when a character is knocked down... so....

What gives?! I don't want to have to select them to force a manual heal gdi. Especially since tactics are gone.

Tactics were so amazing. I had so many conditions set up for my healer mages and tanks. Especially on my nightmare runs. Sigh...

Is it that bad? That's game braking for me

I've found a workaround to not having tactics by being obsessive with the Attack my Target button. It works fairly well as it causes my tank to shift targets and start building threat. I just don't know why they pulled tactics when everything else in this game is amazingly robust.

Did some experimenting. If you set a character to "follow" themselves they just start attacking the first thing they see and go through their assigned skills. Cass is my tank and now, on normal mind you, I barely have to micromanage her. Not nearly as good as the old tactics system but it's better than your tank constantly switching to attacking what you are when you're trying to take out stragglers.

OMG if that actually works that is great news, I wonder if it fixes the problem of the characters not using any spells. In my game cass is the only AI that uses spells at all

Lower their stamina reserve setting in behaviors, then in tactics set some of the abilities to preferred. They'll use those first.

I don't understand this either.  If they make some small adjustments to camera control and add back the tactics from DAO, this game would be nearly perfect.
