So I am relatively new to DA series, i created a Qunari mage did i screw myself by doing this also i thought the mage would have been a little more power full but find myself just a supporting role in all this. Should i just start over i'm about 10 hours in.
Did i screw myself?

If you go to the blacksmith at the inquisition camp, you can purchase a one time use item that will allow you to reassign all your ability points. You can then choose more offensive spells from the Inferno, Storm, and Winter schools.

No really. you could become a Knight Enchanter, which is a close combat mage. The defense against melee from the qunari fits in that spec. Or you could start over, 10 hours is not that much.

Don't underestimate the power of a supporting mage - check the specializations and see how you might fit one of those roles. If you don't like where you're headed, do as sundriedrainbow said, buy the respec item and start over. There's no need to restart completely, unless you're finding your role in the story itself is becoming distasteful to you.

Keep in mind that mages take longer to "mature" and really come into their own.

There's nothing wrong with a supporting spec since combat (if playing on higher difficulties) is all about mitigating your incoming damage. Mages excel at that. Also, as stated above Knight Enchanter is a great fit for Qunari if you want to be a mage tank. If you don't want that, start branching out into more damaging rolls or buy a respec item at the blacksmith's. Mages have more options of setting up cross class combos than either the rogue or warrior and most if not all of the mage's base spells seem to have a status effect tied to them: frozen, chilled, feared, or paralyzed. So even at your most damaging you'll still be a little support-like due to the innate CC nature of mages.

If you dont like the role you have now and dont want to "wait and see" for the specializations - Respec and go all in to the storm tree (minus an ability or 2 from a diff tree like barrier and the one that reduces threat) Get to the point where you have chain lightning, the lightning strike, and the static cage with its upgrade - you do some serious damage with the storm tree abilities - its also all about what your companions abilities are as well - Since I have lightning strike and a few abilities that causes status effects, Ill use cassandras shield bash to do a cc combo - or the same with my rouges abilities
