Do you prioritize mobs or elites first?

I've been trying to play on Nightmare, realizing that some battles require more tactics.  Sometimes I get the choice between focusing on a more elite enemy first, or taking down some of the mobs to reduce the overall DPS of the cluster we're facing.  Do you think it's better to start with the biggest kid on the block, or wipe out his/her lesser friends first?

It's kind of handy that the Tac Cam shows what they are weak and immune to.

In every game I've ever played I took the minions first and it always worked, take that for what its worth.

While your wailing on the big bad with tons of health and possibly guard or barrier. Meanwhile the little guys are draining your health and taking you down. On any asie from easy you need to focus on the little ones first :)

Especially those damn archers...

I kill the trash mobs first and then beat down on elites/bosses.

It depends. For example you'd probably want to kill a mage first - I fought like two mages so far, and both cast barrier, so they have to be the first to go.

Otherwise, always priorotize ranged targets - archers and wraiths are very dangerous (they tend to deal 50-100 damage on Nightmare, and I'm level 3-4) and have relatively low HP.

When it comes to dealing with powerful warriors, I want them taunted by Cassandra so he doesn't hurt my mages and Varric, and then deal with the rest of the enemies, before finishing him.

In boss fights, mob waves always take priority, although so far I only fought prologue boss - but it's a general rule.

Tank keeps bad boys busy, you erase mobs and then take care of them.
Worked for me all the time.

Or..what Jester in a post above me wrote.

I'm only 9 hours in so I'm still working out tactics. But I usually go after both by having 3 party members gang up on the tough enemy and have 1 other party member (usually my inquisitor rogue) take out archers and other ranged enemies. Unless of course facing a mob of level 4s and there's a level 8 mixed in then it's all hands on deck.

If all the mobs are the same level (or close) I'll position my party, use invisibility and position my rogue behind the weaker ranged enemies, then have the rest of my party engage the heavier enemies while my inquisitor lays the wood on the scrubby enemies. That tactic seems to work so far but I'm sure I'll have to adjust when I get new party members and face tougher enemies

Thanks for the feedback.  Seems a lot of people use the same tactic, taking out mobs and ranged enemies ASAP.

Kind of makes me miss the old "tactics" screen in DA:O.  Now that was a complex system.

Do the ranged mobs first, those guys will keep hitting you for regular damage as long as they are there.

Edit

Also watch for stalkers, they will target your ranged characters and try to wipe them out.

Reason why you should go for the easier enemies first is because they often have less hp, but they can still pack a punch. They should go down fairly fast compared to elites, and you'll be taking less damage for rest of the battle. Taunt the elite using your tank and use your dps to take out the easier enemies.

I always do adds first, elites usually have higher health and take longer to kill which means more mobs doing longer damage to you if you don't kill the easier ones first.

My thoughts exactly. It'll take longer to down an elite - all the while you're taking consistent damage from the pawns.
