Generally out of context it looks I hate DAI, or don't like it. I think that's to much of a generalization. And felt like following the trend because I'm so trendy.

My favorite game of the series, will be DAO which is pretty much what everyone knows, I'm sure. I talk enough about it. I'll only give a brief explanation for this. Basically I have always loved the strong narrative, strong direct RPG elements, and that old school feel to it. It came right at a time when the fans of this genre needed it. We were all scared that the genre was ending and that companies had forgotten us.

Which they did for DA2. What I mean is the genre really felt dead when DA2 came out. I felt like I literally was slapped in the face by Bioware. This had to be a joke right. Thing was it wasn't the game that pissed me off the most. I use to be on the forums of Bioware for a while back then. But it was all the backlash, we the people who felt like we just got the middle finger that made me honestly not want to buy Bioware games any more. The denial that this game was bad by the developers. The outright not listening to what we had to say, the ones who bought DAO. And now they had all this new customer base who never played DAO. I was outright pissed and swore to myself that I'd never by another Bioware game again because of the attitude that was represented on this site that year.

And I didn't. I didn't buy Mass Effect 3, I got around to playing because my sister forced me to do so. Otherwise though, I probably wouldn't have played it.

Now that we have a general backstory of how old I am in video games played. I'll get unto my impressions of DAI.

I'll be honest the way DAI was marketed, was that they were listening to the fans? As I play DAI I wonder which fans they were listening to? The DAO fans? Or the DA2 fans?

As a predecessor to DAO this is not a good game.

As a predecessor to DA2 it's a way better amazing game.

I feel like DAI was the expectation of DA2. DAI should have been the game DA2 was. At least it wouldn't have been such a shock to the system as DA2 was and maybe some fans would complain the RPG elements were watered down, but at least it felt more like a Dragon Age game than 2.

As a Dragon Age game, as a predecessor to Origins, I feel slightly lied to again with DAI. Because they didn't listen to any of us at all, when I say any of us I mean the old DAO fans because if that were the case we would have DAO RPG elements [mage skill trees, perks, etc.] and not watered down neutered elements like Awakening.

As a Dragon Age game, as a predecessor to DA2, I feel this games hold up stronger and much better than DA2. All though it has the butchered, bastardized version of Awakening elements its still something.

I'm on the fence about this game.

A better story, an open world, actual RPG elements, and a better cast of companions

A lack of an in depth complex RPG elements I would have liked if they didn't focus so much on the CC to give us mages more than elemental magic. Why is every RPG going back to plain elemental magic? That's steps way way way to backwards.

A lack of direct narrative and the vague plotline set it back.

But also a lack of interesting quest, so far at least, also set it back.

I have restarted 3 times just to get my elf right, and have played the Hinterlands for several hours. I mean when I say that from 10pm at night to 6 in the morning.

All in all I'd give this game a 7 or 8, probably an 8 for a good effort, but I am disappointed as a DAO fan.

I don't think we'll ever get back the magic that was DA:O, but I've come to live with that.  Taken on its own merits, I think Inquisition is a fabulous game.  I try never to compare them and just play it for entertainment.  I'm immersed, hard, and that's all I can ask for.

Out of curiosity, when you say you restart to "get my elf right", what exactly do you mean?  Changing classes, or different skills?  I assumed the respec tokens would eliminate the need for this.

I'm only about a few hours in, but so far I share many of your concerns. I feel much the same way about DA:I being basically DA2 with more dev time. I am feeling gutted by the watered down RPG elements and I'm finding little to enjoy about the gameplay. If I can motivate myself to finish it I will write a full review when I'm done.

I don't know why everyone quotes DA:O like its the god among games that all others have to live up to. While I thought DA:O was ok, its not my favorite and there are plenty of things I liked better from DA2. Both of the previous games are good and I'm liking DA:I a ton so far! But perhaps I hold this line of thinking because I played DA2 first and liked the pace of it compared to DA:O and DA:I seems to be in that direction of it. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and I do feel bad that you are having some problems with the game and its enjoyment, as even I thought the beginning was a tad slow until towards the end of the first act. All you can do is keep playing and see if it moves more towards your expectations?

Also this sounds harsh, but I doubt anytime soon games are going to go more towards the route of DA:O, gaming has taken a new direction that is away from the RPGs of old and creating the new wave of what RPGs are seen as.

On a last note, I highly agree with you, I spent an hour making my elf and really wish there was a "face melter" to fix the small issues with them that you find in game.

I disagree completely. I believe ideas and inspirations can be compared. If we ever want good games, then part of getting good games is comparing them to other great games. Especially if they are in a series. If each game has a Dragon Age label on it, then I am going to compare the games, I am going to take what works and what didn't work and compare them side by side. Because that's where constructive criticism lies.

The mage thing has been happening in a while, it happened in Elder Scrolls where they butchered their complex magic system and destruction magic just became elemental. I mean seriously, wtf. I love spiritual magic, necromancy, fade magic, magic that deals with time, etc.

Meaning his appearance. He kind of had some features wrong a few times. One time I put to much pink around his eyes.

I find that a lot of games which come under the EA banner after a merger suffer from "streamlining" so that they are more accessible to casual players.  DA, ME, Dead Space, all of them ended up shadows of the original games.  I found that Destiny suffered the same fate after getting beamed up to the mothership Activision.  Games start to play like big budget movies; all flash and no substance.

That being said, I still love Inquisition even though I miss some of those elements from Origins.

It isn't that DAO is the god of all games. If you bothered to pay attention, it's the standard I expect of my RPGs. I completely dislike this modernization of RPGs. Someone said something I absolutely agree with. We, the people who played old school games, made them where they stand today. DAO, Elder Scrolls, Baldurs Gate, Guild Wars, etc. We made them where they are today, with a 3rd, 5th whatever game. And they decided they wanted to go with the money train, and collect this type of new fan. We gave them our money. We gave them our money to say this is the type of game we want and we will buy. And they decided to go with your type of gamer instead.

It's that kind of Fan, Franchise, and Developer relationship that gets in the way. However, it be nice if we weren't fully neglected or disrespected by their new fans and the developers alike.

This reflect some of my thoughts. F.E.A.R. was another game whose soul was taken by the marketing, publishing machine that is EA.

I didn't mean to sound like I was attacking you! I just meant that anytime something comes out in RPGs, everyone is disappointed that its not basically just like DA:O. I understand not everyone likes the same types of games and I didn't think about it, I guess thats how it goes, one type of player will get left behind at some point. I assume in the future maybe games will take I turn I myself do not like, and I will be in the same boat. Again, I apologize if I came off rude or anything.

(Also, I loved all the F.E.A.R.s haha;; )

Oh no I'm sorry. I realize sometimes I come off as condescending or rude. When I mean it as a joke. But hey tone is hard to catch on the internetz.

I don't want DAO is the thing. That's where people I think get really confused. Is when someone says it isn't like DAO that they think they want an exact DAO.

My rule in life is, "if it isn't broke, why fix it?"

DAO had minor issues and minor flaws. I saw no need to completely rehaul it and change it the way they did.

I want a game that uses its own mechanics, and simply improves on the tiny things or add new things. DAO was not broke. DA2 was really broke. DAI is kind of broke. lol.
