I tried out all classes at start of the game to see what i like i found mage very weak or maybe i took wrong abilities?
DMG was not that great. Two handed warrior seemed do more and take more dmg.

Generally speaking, mages excel at crowd control. They also take "longer" to become more powerful.
So unlike past games they start of weaker?
Might help if you post your build. My fire mine, immolate, barrage spam works great so far.
I was going for winter tree so what ever default winter spells are early on.
I went for winter since i found them good in past games.
Winter is the most lackluster tree, I find. It's decent for crowd control but the other trees blow it out of the water. Don't take it unless you heavily focus on DPS with your other companions. Fade Step IS really good, however.
Storm has it beat on that front anyway. Static Cage is awesome and locks down an entire area for 8 seconds, toss in its upgrade and any AoE you send in the zone deals massive damage. Lighting Bolt is also a decent stun mechanic in a pinch, and nothing beats Chain Lightning against 3+ enemies.
Inferno is all about doing massive damage. Immolate is a good bread and butter spell, but Fire Mine is where its at. 1600% weapon damage with 200% burn after? I have it on Vivienne and it easily one-shots weaker enemies. You can force them in postion with taunts, Static Cage or the like, then gleefully laugh as they go boom.
Spirit is just nice all around to have. Barrier is almost mandatory for any mage even if its the only skill you get in the tree, and the likes of Mind Blast and Revival are always handy in a pinch.
So no, mages aren't weak, it's really just the lackluster Winter tree. I find that mages deal the most DPS out of the three classes. Ironically it seems 2-handed warriors are on the lower end of the scale at about level 10 or so, Iron Bull deals less damage than Cole and doesn't have his escape mechanisms. Meanwhile all my Mages have nifty tricks, barriers, and had hitting spells.
I have Solas speced with Winter/Inferno with a bit of spirit for barrier seems to be a good mix.
Mages don't have huuuuuuuuuuuge burst damage, but the CC/AoE/support spells they have at their disposal are great. My Inquisitor is mostly fire specc'd with a barrier and a bit of electricity for the AoE. I've touched on the Winter tree because of the passive bonuses it has as well.
I can say I'll probably play Mage for my nightmare run as has said above mix Inferno and storm and you have a walking god ahaha. Now I just need to decide what specialization I will run with Her.

I'm playing on Hard and I find that Mages are fantastic. Without unlocking specializations, I find the Lightning tree to be remarkably good and the Fire tree to be equally punishing on enemies. Winter is great for crowd control (I love Ice Wall) and Spirit is excellent for keeping the tank alive.
I easily traded out Varric for Vivienne and Solas.
My go to party is/will be Dorian/Varric/Blackwall but that's my warrior on casual
My nightmare run will be 2 Mages a Rogue and a warrior so I'm thinking Bull, myself, Viv, and Cole/Sera
So what would be best for dps thats what i wanted to play my mage as.
Is it better go all in 1-2 trees tops and get all good stuff at bottom or mix a few more from other trees.

Best DPS = Storm, Fire, or both. I would definitely encourage you to mix because you'll eventually run into some enemies that are immune to a certain element (fire, lightning, winter). You'll need a back up plan.

Would storm and fire not be good then? If anything something cant take dmg from fire i use storm. Same goes for fire...

I'm confused? If an enemy is immune to storm, then use fire. If they're immune to fire, then use storm. I can't imagine an enemy being immune to both, to be honest. Also, you can try finding a staff that has the magical properties of another element (like Winter or Spirit, if one exists).
Or, as stated above...simply try out Winter. ![]()
