OK, spent whole day in Hinterlands and those respawns are INSANE. I play on nightmare so clearing enemy group that is 3-7 levels above me takes some time and before I am able to clear the party, another group already arrives to decimate me. I spend most of the gameplay running and spamming revive spell... that sucks.

yeah the respawns happen fast, even with resources. Also you are not supposed to take on that level 8-12 stuff until you are at least 1 level below it, that's just my recommendation for nightmare. There are plenty of 4-7 level side-areas that you should do first that you need to travel to from the war council map.

The game doesn't really do a proper job of guiding you to those areas though, you kind of just need to travel to them and then see what level the enemies are in them.

Dear OP,

You nailed it with the criticisms. At its present moment, I will most likely give this game, on PC, a 6/10.

Sigh...please CDPR...do not botch up Witcher 3...

Now I am going back to modded Skyrim to find some peace and solace.

I've been lucky (or unlucky depending on how you look at it) to be "behind the curtains" on a particular pioneering MMO some years ago, before they were bought by SOE.  So I have a slight familiarity with the backroom, so to speak.

I'm fairly certain they knew about several of these issues beforehand, specifically the handicapable PC controls, and had already planned to patch it after release.  This was how it got through QA.  This is the way it's done, generally.  In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they had already started working on the bug priority list, patch schedule and the first patch before release once the game went to publishing.  People think that it's all release parties and bar hopping on the night of a release.  It isn't.

What they should have done was just be more transparent.  They should have said "Yeah, we know.  We had a publishing deadline.  Hang in there and bear with us.  It's coming."  Because they didn't, it gives the appearance that they simply forgot or axed it without consideration, QA had their head in the sand and they gave a big middle finger to PC gamers, most especially after their marketing folks made a big deal about it being primarily developed for the PC platform a few months ago.  Big no-no.  Historically, people are more forgiving the more transparent you are.

I'm just as irritated as the next guy or gal, but knowing what I know, I'm holding out for the first patch.   Oh, and as a post script, let me just say, I'm about fed up with developers trying to kill two gaming platform birds with one stone.  They should have taken a queue from Rockstar and released a separate PC version.  This seems to be quite the fad in an attempt to save money, but it's never really been that successful and normally ends up just pissing people off.

I would have happily waited for a PC version.

I really agree with the Rockstar thing. Why don't more developers follow suit I have no idea...

PC gamers are fine with waiting a few weeks for a PC game that plays well on PC...

I am suffering through DAI. I concur with the points the OP makes wholeheartedly. I should admit that my computer is a few years old and doesn't really have the bhp to run this game as well as it should. That being said -- how could Bioware not see this sh**storm coming? I don't know the industry like some of the posters here appear to -- it would seem that the real money to be made is in selling to console players? That is certainly what this PC game appears to be designed for. One of the reasons I liked the DA franchise is because the controls were simple to use on the PC so I could enjoy the immersion and focus on the characters and their stories. The constant effort to accomplish simple tasks prevent me from actually getting caught up in the story.

I can imagine a game origin story where EA tells Bioware to make it our way -- Bioware says that really isn't a good idea and EA tells them do what we tell you or you get no budget. So Bioware passive agressively sabotages the product to be able to tell EA - told you so. Is that far fetched and petty? Probably, but I can't think of a better reason that this game turned out the way it did. I am writing this during a break which I take regularly when my game crashes from looking through an occularum. They certainly listened about the small and recycled environments from DA2 -- no complaints about that; but what this game suffers from is even worse. Finally, is it just my less than stellar graphics card or do other people think the hair all looks like bad plastic Ken doll wigs?

Hm, been playing now for 20+ hours. Haven't found any big glitches, other than some conversation-breaks or 2 AI talking at the same time.

My only BIG concern is the Tactics-cam, especially in caves where space is very limited for the camera to zoom-out, making it a 'cramped' battle. And looting with the right mouse button only functions in tactics mode? WHY?

Some of these points are absolutely ridiculous and such a joke.

Eyebrow colour...

You want to click loot so your player runs towards it.

Combat, you don't want to have to manually walk to engage combat but just click.

Sounds like you should just go play Runescape.

But wait! There's more!

Holy poopy pathfinding, Batman! I'm in a cave on the Sword Coast and the party is running right into a wall trying to get to me because they apparently can't find their way over some rocks (not to mention the exploration "mechanics" are incredibly frustrating...). And when I manually get them out -- they run right back in there! Even over the rocks! I press hold position, and it pretty much does nothing. No one holds position.

When I enter a menu, I can't easily swap from one menu to another (ie if I'm in maps, I can't just press P and go to powers -- or any combination of any menu). I have to exit out of each menu separately and then go into the others.

The minimap is atrocious. It's a glorified compass. Especially with this wide and frequently rocky terrain, I like to know which way I'm actually going -- not which way I'm facing. I like to know what sort of terrain I'm coming up on. I have to constantly press M to go to the big map because this compass is pretty much useless except within five feet of something. The minimap is locked onto the controlled character and is based on which way the CAMERA is facing -- which makes no sense. I'm using the camera to see what's happening around me, the map should be to see where I am in relation to the world, so the little arrow should be turning on a static actual minimap.

NPCs spawn right in front of your very eyes. It's like magic. Sometimes they literally fall from the sky.

This whole walk-away-from-convo-whenever thing is really annoying because NPCs are usually the ones to walk away from you. Am I supposed to follow them constantly? I really would rather a normal conversation camera, rather than one that awkwardly zooms and locks onto, like, a wall, or the top of the characters' heads.

The (still excessively huge) companion bars don't show status effects. They show barrier, guard, and health. If they're paralyzed, I have to hope I caught the word popping up on them. I have it on contextual so it doesn't perpetually block out the scenery, only to find when I lose health from my falls (which randomly assigns damage from two feet and from a hundred feet), it doesn't pop up, so who knows where my health is? I can't easily swap companions unless I click on the portraits -- which I can't make pop up unless I attack something or just attack thin air.

Please, please introduce a UI I can scale, so I can have it up without it blocking my screen. The quest log is still big and pops up arbitrarily. it's really too big for something that can only hold one active quest at a time.

Those mini dungeons are extremely dark, which is great because it's pretty spooky and that's cool, and also because I'm arachnaphobic, but it doesn't even have a map I can look at. So if I've passed a doorway, I will never know.

Lootable things fly in random directions when you kill stuff. I was just barely within seeing range of a dragon that decimated a giant, which was really cool, but then the giant's lootable corpse flew all the way to me. Thanks for not making me run all the way over but... yeesh.

I also really need ranged companions to stop stacking on top of each other and not pulling away from melee attackers.

There's no option for tanks to defend a ranged character being attacked -- just the controlled character or a specific character.

What is the ladder climbing sound even? It's not at all synced with the animation, and sounds more like Carver stomping down some steps than someone climbing a ladder.

If I swap characters during combat -- the game automatically unpauses. Excuse me, I wasn't finished? I will unpause it when I am good and ready.

Plenty of quests are broken. And not side quests -- main ones.

It's really hard for me to understand why the console versions would be so polished, but the PC one is not. We're coming up on a four-day weekend in the US... which would be a great time to knock out a huge chunk of the game, but most PC users won't be able to because the main quests are broken, if half the PC players can even get the game to launch and stay on, and put up with the 15-and-below FPS.

Sadly, I can't even return the game in a fit of anger because I like everything else about it, and I can see that it would be fun if things were actually functioning

Maybe list things that actually need working on instead of adding "filler". I swear gamers are just lazy these days. Let me contact them and ask for a mode where they can play the game for me and I'll watch...

Oh that's nice, your first post and already are you trying to ridicule the opinion of other people.

The points made by the OP are quite valid seeing as we could click-to-move/loot/attack in previous installments of Dragon Age. So no it's not a joke, it's a normal mechanic a lot of fans expected to be in the game.

oh, well once I got into HL - I had no reason to leave the area. It is huge and soaking with collectibles and quests so I am just clearing the map carefully step by step running into enemies whose level varies from 4 to 12 (so far). My level is currently 6 (and party members are level 5) and it is going fine... it is difficult to close a tear with lvl 12 rage demon but thanks to stupid pathfinding and zoning I can do that (lol). No reason to leave and return to my base - intended to do so once I completely clear Hinterlands.

There should be keyboard short cuts for everything in the inventory and crafting tables. For example the weapons menu has no, as far as I can tell, key for moving into the sub categories. If I want to look just at daggers I need to mouse click which baffles me considering the arrow keys work just fine for up and down, you'd think they'd put the right left keys for the sub menus. You have to hover the mouse over an item for a comparison to that which you have equipped that would be fine if you could just leave the cursor there and arrow up or down for the other comparisons but nope, you have to move the cursor off then put it back for the next item. I can use the arrow key and enter keys for crafting but need a mouse click to confirm. I'd rather be able to create then arrow down to the confirm and hit enter, its faster and more efficient. I've resorted to crafting for most of my gear because, I'm finding the drops to be rather lackluster so far at level 9. One purple sword and staff to speak of so far and I've out leveled their usefulness.

I tried searching for similar posts, but I couldn't find any based on several keyword searches, soo here goes...

What crappy "aesthetic" led them to use all caps for everything? It's such a huge 'do not' for accessibility, I just don't get it. I love reading all the notes and codex entries, or, I used to anyway... They clearly spent years writing all the stuff, I'd love to read it without my brain or eyes hurting. It's probably not something fixable like WoW, where you can drop in alternate fonts, either.  :(

A very small gripe, but here's something else that annoys me. Mounts spawn in behind you. Why? If I'm pointing a certain way, that's probably the way I want to go, and having to walk back to jump on my horse is annoying. There's no way to hotkey getting on the mount either? Gotta actually click it? Or did I miss that button somewhere lol? You'd think that the dismount and mount button would be the same, but I guess not.

Mount walking speed seems to be the same as on foot. Also, the sprint for the mount likes to just turn off if I make too sharp a turn. Not to mention, the mount sprint doesn't even feel/look that fast. I guess I'm used to Red Dead Redemption horses, where it actually feels and looks like I'm moving really fast in comparison to walking as John. Still, it seems barely worth it for the speed boost at this point.

I just wonder why no one in the testing phase really polished these things. I know they're small, but they really add up in this game, especially around the interface and the movement aspects. Seems bad to release a game with this many UI annoyances.

Folks.  Wait for the patch.  Trust me on this.  They will make or break this game with the first few patches.  That's been the way of things the past 10 years.  MOST especially in regards to multi-platform.  I've seen games change completely after a patch.  Blizzard is WELL known for this.  Yes, it was released poorly, the glaring issues overshadowing the stellar production value, but I'll be surprised if this is the same game after the first couple of patches.  If it is, I'll take a shot of Maker's Mark and toast the death of one of the greatest RPG franchises in the past ten years, and then uninstall it.

Sadly, I agree with everything the OP pointed out. I just can't comprehend how they could go so terribly wrong with the controls and combat. DAO's combat was awesome; DA2's super fun on my stabby rogue. My ME vanguard is still the character I log in to play every now and then just because I love its combat mechanic.

After my first combat encounter in DAI I spent ages trying to figure out keybinds that would fix this mess. It's just not working for me. How am I supposed to play melee with WASD, weird camera angles, even weirder targeting or tactical mode? I don't care how pretty the environments are when the gameplay is this clunky and unenjoyable. Action combat is fine when it's well done, but this is not. Instead of playing DAI all night as I had planned, I ended up playing my current mmorpg just to experience fluid combat again.

It's sad that I'd rather read the forums than log back into the game.

Annnnd respeccing crashes the game two out of three times.

And of course we're gonna wait for the patch? But would it not be nice if there was a running tally of the bugs and errors and general problems the game has? Not everyone has the same issues, it seems, so feedback is important? We have no idea, of course, if anyone is even looking at this thread, but maybe.

A very small gripe, but here's something else that annoys me. Mounts spawn in behind you. Why? If I'm pointing a certain way, that's probably the way I want to go, and having to walk back to jump on my horse is annoying.

That one's easy.  The horse spawns wherever the camera is not currently looking.  It's a trade-off: You can either have the horse spawn nearby (and thusly wherever the camera isn't looking), or you have to wait for a horse to run in from off in the distance, a la Skyrim or Shadow of the Colossus.  They went with the former (which I think is the right call), and decided to not have the mount suddenly magically spawn in front of you, because that would be somewhat immersion-breaking (again, I think that's the right call).

That point though, I'll give you full credits.  For all of the design that was put into them (which was really well done), it seems pointless to have a mount.  There's not enough incentive to use one (they all go maybe 110% normal walking speed, but now you have the added benefit of accidentally running into a fight and needing another 3 seconds to get off the horse and respawn your teammates), and I feel like there were more lofty ideas that had been planned (different horses go different speeds, can jump longer distances, can perhaps give buffs of some kind) that ended up being cut.  The result being that a portion of the team spent thousands of hours making 50-odd mounts (and all of the game mechanics behind them), and were then told that all of their work was pointless; they could have just made one mount and left it there because all of the different attributes of the horses were being whitewashed over to match one generic slow horse.  I can't really imagine any other reason for the huge variation in mount designs.

While I am enjoying the game, I agree to all the issues the OP wrote about. My personal priorities are:

- in some places ridiculously high respawn (grindy feeling)

- weird search mechanic

- inferior PC controls

- lack of Healing class/spells (the potion spam idea is SO hilariously bad, sorry)

The tone is a little harsh but I agree with 90% of your points. The respawn thing annoys me too. Repsawning is great.... On a long timer - like a day. This isn't an MMO; the enemies should not be respawning less than 30 seconds after they die. It's really annoying. The waterall cave in Storm Coast is a perfect example. You walk in and kill the enemies along the way (small cave). Loot, walk back out and EVERYTHING has respawned. Take two steps in the other direction and it all respawns again.
