And Jade Empire had the worst combat of any Bioware game or action game.

gotta disagree here.. Jade Empire is one of their best games IMO.. i wish they would make a sequal, or an HD remake at the very least.

Thanks for that, Brogan, would have missed it.

Well, it's not exactly more info than what we had before, but it gives me enough hope to hold off on deleting my DW rogue >.>

We should have a 'Patch Countdown Party'. I'll bring the drinks -- I was thinking of 'Conclave's Vintage', 'Rogue tears', and 'Master and Commander (controlled vintage)'.

Totally agree with Bioware's inability to do decent looking hairstyles. The hairstyles in DAI are too limited and what is there is pretty bad.

Same 9(?) hairstyles for both male and female is a travesty.

What's more, the hair (and beard) textures are at such a low resolution it looks like something pre-Origins.

I have to think there are updated textures and more options tucked away somewhere ready for the first patch.

you know, I pretty much agree with most things you said.

Sad but true. I am torn about requesting refund - i think I have some time still. I really want to like the game - it does seem to be a bit better than DA2 (no saying much), but there are so many things that make it just not fun to play. Especially the combat as a rogue. No auto-attack, no click target attack. Like you, I spend so much time attacking air unless I PAINSTAKINGLY move to the enemy. Looting something is such a chore that I often skip it. These are all things I noticed within the first 1-2 hours of playing the game today. It is why I came to the forums.

How these things could have missed the testing/feedback is beyond me.

I am not one to bash. I loved DAO, I enjoyed all the ME games (even 1 and 3). this is a bit depressing to me.

Made this post a while back in a different thread that got buried, if i recall the OP of that one was praising the game and emphasizing how good the story and ending of the game are... he also mentioned how the game picks up later, the first part/act being hard to become invested in... I don't think he experienced gameplay on PC though. Since i spent a while to write this i was hoping i would get some feedback.

From what i've seen DA 2 was more about weak story/characters compared to the older title, gameplay and means to experience the product were very good. DA Inquisition may have great story/characters, but the gameplay/means to experience it are impaired and take away from the overall feel, especially the story.

SPOILER AHEAD *IF YOU DO NOT WANT MAGE RECRUITMENT QUEST SPOILED, DON'T READ*

I have managed to play up to the mage enlisting quest. TOP NOTCH stuff, the feels, and the complications... why? because it involves time travel and personally i've seen/dealt with stories, movies whatever related with time travel... just look at Bioshock Infinite to get an idea of the whole world parallel clusterfest of madness. Time travel ain't pretty at all and it causes atrocities, you are presented timelines/ alternate worlds were everything went to mock and ruins. In Inquisition your whole party and the world suffers your one year absence. Very nicely presented, but personally i think they could have made it even more dramatic.

For once the PC just got thrown into all the inquisition bussiness cause of his convenient rift closing mark but that's it. No further things tie him down apparently.. it might be elaborated as to how he came to have it further in the story... but for starters that's all we are thrown, and Varric seems logical saying to the PC that he should try and run as far as he can from the whole thing, as he said he has seen enough to know how it's gonna end.... I suppose one argument to as why he stays is only he can prevent world destruction but the game doesn't seem to emphasize this too much, but more like roll with it.. Sure Cassandra says it, Solas says it.. but as a statement not in a persuasive tone to the Inquisitor.

Anyway we come to this quest.. which starts off with a done for world just so later you find your party members dying due to red lyrium... You haven't been through very much with them, but they're dying right in front of you, just because you happened to be displaced for an year and yet they'll help you through trying to fix the issue... and then you get to find Leliana being tortured.... THIS HAD SUCH AN IMPACT. God knows how long she's been suffering and her physical appearance shows the extent of the abuse she endured. The first thing that came to mind as you went to undue her shackles and her face was shown on the screen was "you look dead!", it hit me right in the heart... seriously the PC's dialogue and all makes him too distant in the whole affair, "you look dead!" should have been an option to say.. not to her but maybe out loud, (near the end Leliana says as you're about to leave that they from that time line are already dead)... This whole ordeal would have been so much more impactfull if the PC would have been so shaken by having to take in all this to the point that he would lose some mental composure and would impair his movements to the point he would stumble about as he walked, and ofc he should have been crying, and Leliana, poor already dead inside Leliana ("I want the world back" - GREAT LINE RIGHT HERE), would still be tough enough to press onward trying to get the PC back in his timeline while also picking him up on his feet whenever he stumbled and manning him up for the few battles that come up...

OFC it all culminates with the party rushing off to hold off demons and dying in the process while you open the portal thingy to get back... AND OFC with Leliana getting a badass scene where she chants a prayer while taking out demons before she's put down for good...

I don't know if you can tell, but time travel stuff pisses me off, because it was a world that had these characters and they got killed (sure if he went missing one year, but they fixed that... but to fix it they had to go missing one year, get it?) ... therefore our Inquisitor can therefore get back and see the people that just a minute ago went off and died in front of him and burst in tears as he's no longer the indecisive ****** that couldn't get too attached to the situation... A nice dialogue with present Leliana would have been nice, telling her about the experience, about how she was the one to pick you up after you panicked, yet you ended up failing her, you watched her die once, and all the others, and you're not gonna let it come to pass. You with renewed purpose and resolve will start putting effort into leading the Inquisition to victory...

ohh what could have been done with this segment.... :| indeed great story

I second that, the idea of mixing role playing game and fighting game was very original and intriguing if not optimaly implemented. Also I really like to explore that wolrd, a change of lace among all those western RPG.

Suggestions:

1. Increase the distance from the battlefield in the tactical mode.

2. Add options to pause the game on being hit, on finished casting a spell, and on encountering monsters.

3. Add more trees into the game; add more mana management options so that it does not regenerate that easily (make the game combat harder).

4. No autoattacking is really great too, despite someone's words above, so keep it out of the game! Some of us love to play with AI and AI abilities off, and autoattacking would spoil that greatly.

5. Add attributes management to the character creation.

6. Add a spellbook in the manner of BG series (Wizards/Sorcerers).

Feedback:

Excellent job! We love the game!

It should be toggleable. As it is now one part of the fans are screaming for auto-attack to return, while the other part either doesn't care, or do not want it to return. Give us the option to turn it on/off for each character, including our own. Problem solved.

I need to talk need to tell...

the story was finished sort of but EVERYTHING ELSE wasn't it was a pain in the ass colllectring every loot etc...

I also missed the auto attack If I was looking the sort of the right direction my chara found the enemy that I was supposed to attack...

and then the conversations it was hell figuring out what those little icons meant because in DA2 they meant something now not so much. I mean I was a thief sarcasm is my second nature but here no sarcasum att all just half assedness. There were a lot of bugs I needed to reload a lot of times because of that I felt like playing somekind of Ubisoft games (personal opinion of the games from this developer that they are half finished when they come out), of course thanks to my luck always find them...

What I really really liked in the first dragon age that there was a page that you could see how deep you were in the story I missed that in DA2 and here to, this would have been usefull.

Another thing that I haven't seen in Ansa's post that I liked to know how is my relationship with my companions either I could not find it (possible but unlikely) the game only stated if someone dissaproved with me or not that was all, how the hell I'm suppossed to know when can we have that bl**dy first kiss or when he is leaving me or not. In this game after every little mission I went and talked to my companions that was good and bad at the same time.

Finally in this game I loved the romance scenes very much they were funny and romantic, I romanced cullen and love every minute of it. (in DAO alistair was in a little bit on the shy and cheesy side, DA2 even though fenris was a tipical alfa male for me my hawke came down a total domina I have no idea why) but in this every companion had a soul I felt them very real.

I liked that the characters came back those that I have helped in the first 2 installations but of course i crave for more, what happened to the rest of my companions and friends from the previous games.

This game right now was a mucch better finish than the ME3.

Also I liked that I did not need to play multyplayer to determine who lives and who falls in the battles all the people who joined me some of them dead some of them not but I did not erase species / in this case a faction to win against C.

Even though I have only played the main story line for 5 days and I could not see to the side quest unfortunetly I'm waiting for a dragon to come she is arriving today and I will be hers for until she leavis again (aka mother coming home and I will be his little slave for the time being) so I will play it thourgh again sometimes during christmass.

About the tavern song i hope the bioware gives us a soundtrack download and all the tavern song included I love them more than anything those were my fav.

About character creation It reminded me of old days when I needid about 1 hour to get it right and yes I needid an hour to do it here also.

about another thing before I leave Bioware should think about giving out a tarot card pack I loved the design every bit, and I would love to tell the future with them.

P.S.: why my chara avatar was a hand?

I don't want anymore big areas with mmorpgs quests only because at the moment we have in the game 2 types if maps.

- maps for story only

- maps for grind only

I would have prefered them to be combined instead of empties grind zones with no sub arc stories for themselves.

Honestly most of the things are tolerable but the disappointments which were chipping my enthusiasm off were the advanced tactics and lack of modding, like why the hell not? DAI isnt perfect and why not leverage off the community to build something for us to play the way we want? I actually enjoyed the story and the incredible voice acting, small combat and quest nuances werent that bad to throw me off to stopping DAI altogether but for the armor design choices imma repost my rant from another thread:

i almost restarted my game as a warrior instead of my now mage because my mage has the magical ability to turn any plate armor he wears into a cloth or leather looking. Heavy templar armor becomes leather armor and so far most, if not all craftable helmets that ive come across look pretty stupid, so hide helmets a perma on for me, U can use silverite to allow the heavy armor to be worn on your mage but like i said, they turn them into cloth and leather so if its the look you are going for, be ready to be disappointed.

Im at lvl 19 now and almost all the armors look similar or rotated between 3 or 4 designs, that really was a buzzkill and my interest in the game kinda plummeted. I mean i chose the Knight enchanter because the icon shows a PLATE HELMET and it says KNIGHT, why cant i wear plate armor as allegedly advertised?

Pretty damn bloody questionable design choice if u ask me

You can save anywhere you like, provided you aren't in the middle of any battle...

Ok thank, I was a bit worried when someone claimed it to be so.

I love this game. So far, I've been playing it for 12 hours pay day and I am still totally excited. It is awfully pretty, has a great story, awesome cinematics, tons of content with soooo much stuff to do.
The polish as far as graphics, animations and level of details is stunning!
I just finished the Orlesian Ball and I keep thinking "Wow, amazing game!"
How they managed to make me feel as a leader and integrated the whole "you are both an adventurer and the head of a cool organisation" is masterful.

However...

BioWare still screwed up in many areas. And what I find surprsing is that ALL of those things were done right in DA:O or DA II.

1. Party AI: The worst aspect in this game. DAO had excellent tactics where you could determine what your party members should do when. Here, you not only completely lack control over WHEN an ability should be used, but the companion movement is also completely bollocks. Ranged fighters do not stay in range and Cassandra bull charges right into nowhere. It's no excuse that DAI is "different" in that respect to its precessors. It's just worse. There is nothing in the new tactics that is better than what we had in DAO.

2. PC controls K+M: very clumsy and bad. Tactical mode is useless (no queing, no lasting commands, no overview), no point and click is annoying, looting is a pain and fine party control is a nightmare. Camera view is extremely limited. The idea that the mode (normal vs. tactical) switches when you switch camera angles is extremely counter-intuitive. Challenge for all the bioware employees: Do the riddle in "The Hand of the Dead" in the Exalted Plains on a PC. If people can't manage it within 10 minutes even with knowing the riddles solution, reimplement the whole control scheme right now. I took hours yesterday and I wanted to scream at my screen, because controling my party the way I was used to in DAO is simply a major headache.

3. Companion approval: Approval/Disapproval happens even when the character is not there. So when I make a choice, I get 9 messages on who approves and disapproves while the cut scene, but no spoken reaction. I don't know why they are thinking like that. DAO was great for making me feel, care and understand the companion's opinion. Morrigan's "are we going to save puppies next" in Redcliffe is an awesome example of that, as well as the cat fight between her and Wynne. Here, I simply get "yeah, well, somebody doesn't like me", something that happens so quickly and emotionlessly that I can't follow. I hardly ever get companion reactions in cutscenes. And with no approval rating, I have no idea how people think of me. So we got an technical, cold information on approval changes without making it transparent where my approval is. While companion approval was extremely important for me in DAO, here, I just don't care anymore, because it's so intransparent.

4. Save games: Oh come on, is it really too much to ask for to make a simple comment for a save game, so I know what just happened and where I am?

5. Maps: Open world is nice. However, when I explore some ruins or caves in the open world, I don't see anything on the map. It doesn't tell me where I can go. And the compass is also missing the features I liked about the minimap, which showed me walls and terrain I can't cross. In addition, I can't make any notes on my map. Here was a dragon that I want to fight later? Let's write this down on paper.

6. Dialogue emotion choices: They had them for every dialogue choice in DA II, giving my character a personality. Here, 90% of all dialogue wheel choices are just "general" where you don't know if I am nice, sarcastic or angry. Only very rarely, the emotion choices show up on the dialogue wheel.

7. Choice and consequence: There are some big ones. So far, I've had 2. DAO seemed to have more of the moral choices, more really conflicting requirements and people calling you out for it. Also, the drama/friction and tension between the characters seemed to be stronger, requiring you to take a stance.

8, Health Potion and Healing: Ok, I have to admit that I don't have a problem with that. I like the way healing potions are managed. And if I have to break off my current quest 2 meters before the end to restock my potions, I know I did something wrong before and I need to L2P.

Seriously, BioWare, you did it all of this right before.
Why did you not just take the exact same things, exact same algorithms and mechanisms you used before and which everybody loved and built them into your new shiny, pretty, awesome new game?
Saving a little on gathering quests and minigames and investing into things that worked perfectly before would have made this game a masterpiece, instead of a game that is "really great, but with some major flaws".
What were you thinking?

I noticed that my campanions talk less than before during the story, in the previous games I remember that they could bicker between them during story plot. Now, it's just one line if they're not involved in story. I mean they just make 1 comment and pouf nothing more.

From what I can see, it seems more like 99% want it returned.

And anyway, the 'attack' function doesn't need to be always available. Why is LMB basically only used for attack, regardless of situation? Makes no sense. Just a bad control scheme.

If something was working in previous games, don't touch it.

Thank you Ansa for your post. I agree completely.

BW`s attempt to "reinvent the wheel" by replacing it with a square one is more than an issue. For me, it`s a NO play case.

Fortunately for me, DAI is still unreleased in my country (I pre-ordered the game). I was upset by the delay, but not anymore.

If DAI would have been released some 30 years ago, it would be fine. But since the first Mac there is a nice little piece of standard PC equipment called "mouse". Canceling click-to-move, tooltips, click-to-loot and auto-attack for a team-based strategy RPG is ridiculous.

Of course, I can play DAI with these issues, but I wont. Simply because I play for fun, not as a compulsory chore. In the same idea, BW should pay attention at Microsoft and the issues with Windows 8. Of course anyone can use the Modern interface, but reverting to that from a hierarchically menu system is plain stupid.

I guess BW tried a "Win 8" thing, unifying console and PC controls for DAI (probably trying to force players to buy game controllers) but it was a very bad move. AND I AM QUITE SURE IT WAS A DELIBERATE, INTENTIONAL DECISION - exactly like the one Ms did. And just as wrong. At least BW have the "spectacular success" of Win 8 as an example.

It`s probably useless to point out for BW the difference between a proper character movement/attack/loot control and a poor one - I am sure they understand it all too well. But maybe BW should ponder about Win 8 market share compared with the old XP, and contemplate the prospect of DAI sales with these issues unaddressed.
