I have to agree with Firebug. The characters are fuglier than DA2. If Bioware was aiming for realism, they should imitate beautiful people instead of the ugly ones. The marketing used a beautiful image of Morrigan. It's a little bait-n-switch, I think.

Try playing it on the Xbox 360, the graphics and textures are so bad, it makes me wish it looked like ME3.

The changes in look between all three ME games were nice, DA:I is a giant step backwards.  If they couldn't get it looking good on the older consoles, then they shouldn't have released it on them.

I'm disappointed big time with DA:I and I had zero expectations for it.

What a shame :( As much as I had reservations about some aspects of DAI, and am glad I haven't bought it yet, I never thought the PC version's controls would be so badly messed up.

This comment is very interesting.  I realize Laidlaw is the guy who does all the demonstrations and has been in charge of this series for a long time.  I wonder how involved he is in the actual programming of the interfaces.  I wonder if he is the kind of creative director who doesn't care how something gets done, as long as it gets done.  Does the fact that he spent almost all of DAI demo season with a controller in his hand as opposed to m&kb mean it's not important to him, and thus he wouldn't care if they just trashed the pc scheme that worked for 14 years on a whim?  And if he's not (hypothetically) going worry about the effect that has on the customers, does it really matter if anyone else at Bioware does?

He is in charge of the overall design, and the direction the franchise has gone in since he was brought on board towards the end of DAO development is clear. Also Jade Empire was his baby.

Ansa, could you add the ability to remap additional mouse buttons including the scroll button to the list?  I started a thread on it as well, but better off adding to an already existing list.

This is actually a very good point. The fact that all the demos were done on consoles should be a dead giveaway that most of the playtesting is probably done on consoles and that PC is just an afterthought. That's exactly how the game feels.

I don't fully agree with the the argument brought up several times in this thread: if it works, don't touch it. Of course the game has to change. We would be just as disappointed if we got a DA:O clone with a different story. That said however, don't break all of the systems that worked in previous games either.

Some of the issues I have with the game:

  •  A & D should be strafing, not turning on PC... guys, seriously. At least you can remap them.
  • Tactical camera elevation is not flexible/high enough.
  • When changing characters, tactical camera automatically snaps to newly selected character (makes assigning a new target tedious)
  • Not able to click to walk/interact while not in tac-cam.
  • Simplification of tactics system. I opted to completely switch it off and manually control every single character. In DA:O I usually opted to create complex systems for my companions and then focus on playing my main character. Not possible anymore.
  • Removal of healing spells. I like playing healer classes. :-(
  • The anchoring of player progress
Let me elaborate a little on this. This is actually an interesting point and I believe the true reason why we got stripped from our healing spells. If you want to make players regularly return to camps to restock on supplies ("anchoring" them to that camp until they unlock a base/camp deeper into game progression, this system is aka waypoints) you must make those supplies a) scarce enough and B) limit/not provide alternatives to those resources. You never find potions on slain enemies and there are no ways to heal you characters outside of camps/without resetting your current progress to the last waypoint. The fact that enemies dynamically respawn makes this even worse, because on your way back through the areas you already cleared you will run into the same/similar groups of enemies again. I find this really annoying. I don't know exactly why a game designer thinks that anchoring players to waypoints is a good idea. There are RPG-like genres out there, primarily dungeon crawlers, like Diablo or Dungeon Siege, that use this but they are driven by their grindy nature and the linear layout of their game. So the whole point of the game is to progress through these waypoints. This is just not the case with open world or story driven RPGs and I don't understand why somebody would make so severe design decisions as removing healing spells and making potions a very limited comodity just to create this anchroing effect in a story driven open world RPG.
  • Cut scenes are super choppy and perform much worse then in-game graphics. I can play on high settings, but I cannot smoothly watch cut scenes with high settings.
  • You cannot inspect the gear you are wearing in the shop interface, which makes browsing for better gear a hassle. At least selling kinda works through the "Add to valuables" button in your inventory screen. Which for whatever reason has an awkward 1 sec or so delay when you click it.
  • Dialog camera. More often than faces, I look at chests, skies, walls, etc. Is it really that hard? Oh and when I initialize the dialog with a companion instead of my main character, my main character will talk, but the camera will focus the companion I initialized the conversation with. Awkward.
  • Sometimes the dialog radial selection menu will not have number shortcuts. Not exactly sure yet that there is a pattern to this.
  • Positioning characters in the tac-cam is really hard. There is no way to issue them to move somewhere and stop there facing in a certain direction. Or just make them turn without moving them into the position from the opposite direction so they are facing in the right direction. A lot of the positional skills (e.g. warrior frontal skills, and rogue flanking skills) are really hard and clunky to use because of this.
  • Path finding has issues with drops, raises, narrow pathways, other characters. Melee skills will often not execute correctly (the animation will play, but no effect or cooldown will trigger), because the path finding cannot find a clear path to the target - although manually walking the character into position will work.
  • Skills like the bull rush or shield wall are really hard if not sometimes impossible to cancel from tac-cam. While bull rushing at your enemies, you must time your attack command perfectly, that the bull rush will actually cancel. If you rush past your enemies the only way to cancel is to go into third person and manually issue an attack command using r/left mouse.
  • No queuing of commands/abilities. Want to move into a position and then perform an action? Yeah, move into a position. Wait. Don't miss that the character has arrived. Perform that action. Especially when manually commanding every single character as required due to the drastically simplified tactics system this get's really annoying and tedious.
  • On a multiple monitor setup, the mouse cursor will not be kept on the screen running the game, even when mouse cursor is hidden due to a "click to pan" interaction (press and hold right mouse button to mouslook).

I've been playing a couple of hours and been finding these (and many more) bugs. This game is not done. This game is not what we've been promised. This game is so disappointing that I will strongly consider not buying the next BioWare RPG. I will certainly no longer pre-order it and wait for user reviews. I am a long term BioWare fan boy, played all the Baldurs Gate, Neverwinter Nights (also the non BioWare titles), Dragon Age and Mass Effect* games. This is no longer the type and quality of game I was used. People tend to blame the publishers if studios they stuck with for years start crumbling like this. I will not do that mistake. I don't know if this is a deliberate decision on BioWare's side or if they just aren't capable anymore at delivering the highly polished and more importantly appealing role playing games they used to. But regardless, it's BioWare who is to blame for this. Not EA.

These two points are ones I specifically wanted to target. First, I'd like to say how annoyingly stupid their buy/sell interface is. Really, guys? You won't tell me which pieces of armor/etc are equipped???

And sadly, no, since BioWare is now owned, lock, stock and barrel, by EA, they are driven by the commands from on high.

And EA has a very, VERY long history of "purchasing" successful game franchises and running them into the ground by monetizing every last facet of the game.

I'm bummed it's more of an action game now but that's okay. My biggest gripe right now is that all the side quests suck and have very little too them. It's a total MMO style quest system which is really annoying to me. No flair, no story, just "fetch me 10 ram horns" and off you go.

Wow, I seriously thought you were going to find a way to absolve the overall design, but I think it's clear this is worse than any of us expected.

I keep thinking, Maybe I should just install it and try the first couple quests.  But then I realize if there is this much outcry, and I'm not even involved yet insofar as actually even playing the game, then it's better to just wait and see what they do in a patch.

Man, some of those things you listed I have not seen anyone else bring up, and it is shocking.

Let's start with a simple ground rule for developers making a 3rd (!!!) installment of the game:

If something was working in previous games, don't touch it.

And for the love of what is holy, don't cut it completely out.

If something was working in previous games, don't touch it.

If something was working in previous games, don't touch it.

If something was working in previous games, don't touch it.

Exactly.

I cannot believe how bad the PC controls and camera are.

All of your other points are also spot on.

I agree with the OP in almost every way.

I'd just like to add, 12 hours in... And the story and the characters are very "meh" so far.

2 hours of your Origin starting zone playthrough had more soul and spirit than 12 hours of DA:I.

The characters are pushy and unmemorable, they don't feel like real people with issues, but like puppets who were retroactively filled with a certain background story (mostly uninteresting).

So far, this is the first BW game in which I don't think I'll be romancing anyone, I simply don't care about the companions

(Sera is the one exception for me).

And while I'm not looking for a TERA-like level of hotness in characters, the amount of ugly hairstyles and ugly characters in general is astounding.

I haven't seen one single female character I'd call attractive in 12 hours of gameplay. At least there's Cullen for males.

These are minor gripes, and they aren't.

It's very hard to enjoy a game when you're forced to look at your character either in a ridiculously stupid hat (seriously, why the silly hats...? the rogue ones especially are just a complete joke) or at his hilariously ugly hair.
Both choices make my toon look like a complete dweeb, and yes, it takes away from me enjoying the game.

Agree with basically every complaint in this thread. In particular, the gameplay implications of having to constantly trek back and restock potion....my god, textbook unfun mechanic.

And lol yeah ugly characters everywhere.

Also, seems like writing has gotten a lot worse than in previous games. Characters and story seem kinda meh. Also, what's with turning the game into Oblivion with 4 people party? Feels like someone made the decision that since they could afford it, throw a ton of money into area design but forget to think about gameplay implications. BioWare's strength has always been focused and thought-out story telling. In this game, I am running around, closing Oblivion Gates...err I mean "rifts" all the while running into pointless sidequests that have no real story implications.

Oh and omg, stop respawning every 5 seconds. I go back to camp, grab a potion and have to fight the same group on the way out that I just finished killing before going back for more potions. Not to mention, seeing enemies (or Rams or w/e) pop out of thin air right in front of your eyes kinda ruins the immersion.

I hate to says this, but with all the mega budget spent on graphics and environments, story telling feels weaker than DA2. The setup was a lot less impactful than either DA:O or DA2, but ok, fine. We set out to build up Inquisition and got bogged down in collecting artifact shards, 10x ram meat, killing meaningless respawning mobs and clicking on every one of 100s of elfroots in sight.

The longer I spend with this game, the more flaws I find. Feels like developers thought that a huge graphics and environment design budget is a substitute for good story telling...kind of like Hollywood blockbusters try to replace quality acting, script and character creation with an obscene special effects budget.

I wonder if a spawning redesign would fix it.  Honestly, I didn't think it could get worse than the parachuting enemies.

I don't think i can keep playing, the teleporting respawns are just over the top for me.

Waiting for a patch now.

And someone at Bioware really has to answer for this, no way this amout of failure was dictated by a publisher.

As a console user mostly, I even though the tactics cam sucked on the 360 it's not just the PC rigs that are having issuses with the clunky design features of the game.

How else would one explain the clear bias to the console version.

This is not really directed at you, but the quote summed up something I would like to address.

Most problems I see here are problems whatever the platform you use. I play the game on console but I'm sure not eager to play a game with no auto-attacks, reduced companion IA and tactics settings, cumbersome tactical cam, reduced inventory management, etc.

Everytime we split the playerbase, our requests concerning the game loose in strength. Everytime we use derogatory comments towards either platforms or the people using them, we loose in credibility.

We are all here because we enjoy Bioware's style of game, whether we play their games on PC or console and whether we enjoy or not other styles of games, we would all be disapointed to see that style disapear.

I don't disagree with anything here, but it's not about jealousy or guilt or feeling 'above' players on different platforms.  I admit I would have no idea if the game plays well on a console or not.  Just as a console only player would have no idea whether or not the pc version is screwed up.

It's about design constraints.  And it's about the money that decides what those constraints end up being.

I thought they nail it this time.. But nope.. Beard still hover around like they don't care.. Lol. Human needs to have a square face or extra plump just to get the beard to fit in correctly. Sigh.. I really thought they would make beard fit perfectly in Inquisition.

Well, this is disapointing. I love absolutely love the Dragon Age series and it took every ounce of self control I had not to preorder this game and actually wait for player feedback before purchasing, and now I'm glad I did. I really hope they fix these issue soon, but for now it looks like I have a wait ahead of me before I'll be buying and playing this game.

I agree with the OP post in every aspect! Now I hope to see some comments from Bioware on these points and also some solutions because adding some features is not so diffucult like some tactical controls, fix the tactical cam, an auto attack for those who want that and add some classical healing spells instead of those horrible potions.
