This is not really directed at you, but the quote summed up something I would like to address.
Most problems I see here are problems whatever the platform you use. I play the game on console but I'm sure not eager to play a game with no auto-attacks, reduced companion IA and tactics settings, cumbersome tactical cam, reduced inventory management, etc.
Everytime we split the playerbase, our requests concerning the game loose in strength. Everytime we use derogatory comments towards either platforms or the people using them, we loose in credibility.
We are all here because we enjoy Bioware's style of game, whether we play their games on PC or console and whether we enjoy or not other styles of games, we would all be disapointed to see that style disapear.
The game is identical across platforms, really. The reason more PC guys are complaining is because Origns and DA2 were very different games on PC compared to consoles. They controlled like a classic PC game. This game is more of an action RPG with action RPG controls straight from a gamepad. That's why PC gamers are complaining louder, it's kind of a shock to the system to have a game go from pure classic PC control to console controls.
The MMO style and crappy quest design is the same for everyone.

All I see is "Boo Hoo, they made PC second class." Guess what, PC gamers get the best of everything all the time except right now. This is how console players usually feel. AND this is how it SHOULD be. Consoles are designed to game and that is IT, PC's purpose is not solely to game.
It ain't true - PC didn't get the best for the last 10 years (with exception of graphics maybe - HD-Texture-Packs are easier to realize with a PC after all)...there's almost no PC-Exclusive-Titels anymore, controls are seldomly adjusted perfectly for the PC anymore etc.
So quit you're lying!
(Imagine all this spoken with an irish or scottish accent please - even if I am not from there...)
greetings LAX
ps: I agree with the opening post...I mean the game - if you only look at the story (had a few WTF-Moments already!) - is fine...but controls on PC are not (there's other things, too - like the fast travel system...why can't I travel to all locations I have already been to? - Why only camps?...need to write my own list I think)...I am a little dissapointed...It still is a fine game though IMHO (well, no really good other RPGs out there ATM...so not much to compare it with, no competition ![]()

It was undoubtedly a design decision. Whats really stupid is that when this happened with DA2 console versions, there was a huge outcry. So now they make the whole game without it what do they expect?...........
IMHO there are clear conflicting design goals with combat, they want to graft action rpg type combat such as from Dark Souls, and use it in a more tactical party based combat setting. And they have not got it to work.
The answer to me is simple go back to what worked with DAO and DA2 making sure encounter design is done well. If Laidlaw wants to make games with that sort of combat let him work on another franchise which isn't so party based.
I think Laidlaw is the culprit as well it seems he has a very stubborn attitude and a deep dislike of origins. I like inquisition because honestly I could tell from the beginning what it was going to be. I didn't have high expectations I knew that little to nothing of origins would be left in this game.
So for me as a gamer I have a new decent game to play as a dragon age fan well that is over. I see origins as a stand alone game now and da 2 and inquisition as a series.

Well, this is disapointing. I love absolutely love the Dragon Age series and it took every ounce of self control I had not to preorder this game and actually wait for player feedback before purchasing, and now I'm glad I did. I really hope they fix these issue soon, but for now it looks like I have a wait ahead of me before I'll be buying and playing this game.
I think you are clearly not alone and I wonder really how many have done the same thing and not even bothered to register and post about it. PC gaming these days has become so hit or miss people that expect a certain level of quality will go out of their way to make sure a game has it before even thinking about purchasing. That also makes me less confident the people who need to see more examples of what we need patched won't see enough for the same reasons.
Man, for now I just want to see the patch notes for the changes Darrah promised
- Driver support
- Hitching and frame rate issues in cutscenes
- Feedback on keyboard and mouse controls
- General user interface optimizations for PC
I hear ya. I just think it's always good to keep adding to the list regardless, and let them sort it out later. You already did the bulk of the work, which I appreciate.

Though I agree with most things you said and would like to see all the changes you mentioned, the game does have its merits, doesn't it? They've made two changes I've always wanted to see in DA: open world and multiplayer. Let's hope they fix all the bugs and make it a smoother game, but until then, let's enjoy the lore, the new characters, Orlais, and the open world of Thedas!

Please do not forget that even if healing spells are practically absent for some reasons I can't really understand, you can impose your hands on an inconscious companion and give him/her back also some health, either you are a really good surgeon or every one can use a strange form of healings!

Open world...it didn't need it - but with more things like chance encounters (like in Fallout...you run along on a way and bam! - Cutscene (like what happened with Zefran in DA:O...), fight and another cutscene
), quest chains (where you finish a part and say a soldier, a courier or even a mounted emissary appears to tell you that you need something else...or a slain foe drops another hint etc.) and less tedious collect quests it might have worked for dragon age - ATM it's not that great (! - open world needs work, to make it work...the "oh go there and collect this" works for an MMO, not a supposedly story driven RPG) (yes some fetch/collect quests might be nice, but we have got too many:
- the shards (there's too many...devs must have been playing too much Assassin's Creed...they have many of those collect quests, too)
- them logging stands and quarries (note: where would I find those anyway? - Didn't run into any, with the exception of the one in Haven at the start!)
- the landmarks
- the regions to discover
- warden memories (it may be a personal quest, but still -.-)
- crafting materials for the requisitions (hell in DA:O you found enough on the stuff in the way, here you have to go out of your way to find enough for potions, requisitions, quests etc. - Oh and you have to play SUBMARINE (spamming of the highlight circle) to find them...not all are apparent if you don't - you miss them (running by without noticing))
- etc. (don't think that is all)
As for multiplayer:
I don't agree - I would be glad if they took that and threw it out -.- (waste of ressources IMHO - could have been used for other stuff)

As a console user mostly, I even though the tactics cam sucked on the 360 it's not just the PC rigs that are having issuses with the clunky design features of the game.
Same here, I'm playing on XBO (because I can get most of my $48 back if I finish it quickly and trade it in right away) and while I'm not experiencing the same breadth of issues, I'm definitely running into some of the same things.

Yes, the game world is surely great.
The work been done by level designers is outstanding.
Unfortunately, the work being done by the rest of development team is borderline horrible.

I'm in a few hours and basically came here to see if my disconnect with the critical reviews (which seem pretty glowing) was shared by anyone. I've learned not to fight design intent or it really makes a game hard to enjoy, so I'm playing on a PC with the xbox360 controller. I'm pretty sure I haven't gotten far enough to make a fair judgement on story or character depth, but so far it seems like there is less of it compared to previous two games. It seems like you can barely even talk to your companions. A first impression of the story reminds of running around closing oblivion gates; so, here's hoping it gets more inventive as we go along. The weird blending of tactical and action combat leaves each wanting a bit. The multiplayer is not terribly compelling as a sort of mindless dungeon crawl instead of a story driven experience.
So, beyond the PC control issues, there seem to be multiple fronts on where the game needed some work. It's not a bad game, but it's not something I would recommend buying at release so far (maybe I'll be more impressed 20 hours in). I just don't understand game reviewers anymore. They seem easily impressed, and this game seems heavily watered down like DAII (which I enjoyed, but certainly felt the loss of depth).

I just wanted to send a thank you out for this thread. After being disappointed with DA:2 (which I'd pre-ordered) I'd decided I'd wait for player feedback on the forums and non professional reviews prior to buying DA:I. I still might see what happens after patches to see if oppions have changed but I'm thankful for being able to hear other's initial oppions of it without having to invest time or money into it. I was hopeful that the game would be more of a return to DA:O based on the previous feedback so being a fan of Origins it's disapointing that it turned out this way.

No problem man, hopefully this release will teach Bioware to actually respect their fanbase, who made them into what they are now.
If not for our blind support and dedication to their games, they would have been just another burn-out like Troika and others.
It seems with time passing the game developers treat their customers and fans just like some cattle to slap overpriced DLCs to and laugh at it
Hopefully something will change in the industry

Sorry but as a female, I don't agree with you. I'd like my MC to be a sexy badass inquisition. And if the guys were ugly and the women were prettier, I'd be so upset! So, I can see where they are coming from, even though I think Cassandra (I don't 100% like her hair) and Josephine are freaking sexy~!
If that makes me shallow, I don't mind it one bit.

i agree. sad, i can see alot of work going into making the world of DA:i with an interesting story.
Bad stuff:
- the controls are so bad
- removing the AI tactic editing
- camera controls
- even less char skills and spells to chose from then in DA2
- a mage without even 1 healing spell ?
- hair ?
- crash to desktop (directX) every 15-20min
- UI, ingame, inv, char-sheet. (bad design, no details)
- i cant seem to add stat points on lvlup.
i could keep going..
why even make a PC version?
good stuff:
- explore a pretty world
- story
- side quests
- character design
- equip the party with weapons and armor (a funny thing to be happy about)

This is actually a very good point. The fact that all the demos were done on consoles should be a dead giveaway that most of the playtesting is probably done on consoles and that PC is just an afterthought. That's exactly how the game feels.
I don't fully agree with the the argument brought up several times in this thread: if it works, don't touch it. Of course the game has to change. We would be just as disappointed if we got a DA:O clone with a different story. That said however, don't break all of the systems that worked in previous games either.
Some of the issues I have with the game:
- A & D should be strafing, not turning on PC... guys, seriously. At least you can remap them.
- Tactical camera elevation is not flexible/high enough.
- When changing characters, tactical camera automatically snaps to newly selected character (makes assigning a new target tedious)
- Not able to click to walk/interact while not in tac-cam.
- Simplification of tactics system. I opted to completely switch it off and manually control every single character. In DA:O I usually opted to create complex systems for my companions and then focus on playing my main character. Not possible anymore.
- Removal of healing spells. I like playing healer classes. :-(
- The anchoring of player progress
Let me elaborate a little on this. This is actually an interesting point and I believe the true reason why we got stripped from our healing spells. If you want to make players regularly return to camps to restock on supplies ("anchoring" them to that camp until they unlock a base/camp deeper into game progression, this system is aka waypoints) you must make those supplies a) scarce enough andlimit/not provide alternatives to those resources. You never find potions on slain enemies and there are no ways to heal you characters outside of camps/without resetting your current progress to the last waypoint. The fact that enemies dynamically respawn makes this even worse, because on your way back through the areas you already cleared you will run into the same/similar groups of enemies again. I find this really annoying. I don't know exactly why a game designer thinks that anchoring players to waypoints is a good idea. There are RPG-like genres out there, primarily dungeon crawlers, like Diablo or Dungeon Siege, that use this but they are driven by their grindy nature and the linear layout of their game. So the whole point of the game is to progress through these waypoints. This is just not the case with open world or story driven RPGs and I don't understand why somebody would make so severe design decisions as removing healing spells and making potions a very limited comodity just to create this anchroing effect in a story driven open world RPG.
- Cut scenes are super choppy and perform much worse then in-game graphics. I can play on high settings, but I cannot smoothly watch cut scenes with high settings.
- You cannot inspect the gear you are wearing in the shop interface, which makes browsing for better gear a hassle. At least selling kinda works through the "Add to valuables" button in your inventory screen. Which for whatever reason has an awkward 1 sec or so delay when you click it.
- Dialog camera. More often than faces, I look at chests, skies, walls, etc. Is it really that hard? Oh and when I initialize the dialog with a companion instead of my main character, my main character will talk, but the camera will focus the companion I initialized the conversation with. Awkward.
- Sometimes the dialog radial selection menu will not have number shortcuts. Not exactly sure yet that there is a pattern to this.
- Positioning characters in the tac-cam is really hard. There is no way to issue them to move somewhere and stop there facing in a certain direction. Or just make them turn without moving them into the position from the opposite direction so they are facing in the right direction. A lot of the positional skills (e.g. warrior frontal skills, and rogue flanking skills) are really hard and clunky to use because of this.
- Path finding has issues with drops, raises, narrow pathways, other characters. Melee skills will often not execute correctly (the animation will play, but no effect or cooldown will trigger), because the path finding cannot find a clear path to the target - although manually walking the character into position will work.
- Skills like the bull rush or shield wall are really hard if not sometimes impossible to cancel from tac-cam. While bull rushing at your enemies, you must time your attack command perfectly, that the bull rush will actually cancel. If you rush past your enemies the only way to cancel is to go into third person and manually issue an attack command using r/left mouse.
- No queuing of commands/abilities. Want to move into a position and then perform an action? Yeah, move into a position. Wait. Don't miss that the character has arrived. Perform that action. Especially when manually commanding every single character as required due to the drastically simplified tactics system this get's really annoying and tedious.
- On a multiple monitor setup, the mouse cursor will not be kept on the screen running the game, even when mouse cursor is hidden due to a "click to pan" interaction (press and hold right mouse button to mouslook).
I've been playing a couple of hours and been finding these (and many more) bugs. This game is not done. This game is not what we've been promised. This game is so disappointing that I will strongly consider not buying the next BioWare RPG. I will certainly no longer pre-order it and wait for user reviews. I am a long term BioWare fan boy, played all the Baldurs Gate, Neverwinter Nights (also the non BioWare titles), Dragon Age and Mass Effect* games. This is no longer the type and quality of game I was used. People tend to blame the publishers if studios they stuck with for years start crumbling like this. I will not do that mistake. I don't know if this is a deliberate decision on BioWare's side or if they just aren't capable anymore at delivering the highly polished and more importantly appealing role playing games they used to. But regardless, it's BioWare who is to blame for this. Not EA.

What really bothers me here, is that it should have been natural for them to come up with perfect keyb+mouse routines; i mean, you do not write the game code and create the art using a f..ing game controller, you use a KEYB and a MOUSE!

What I want to know is how we went from this:
"PC is basically our lead platform because we all develop on the PC,"
and
"So we develop on that first and foremost and then we keep the other platforms up and running to make sure they don't fall behind."
to the developed-for and clearly-only-tested-on-consoles whatever-it-is that was released. Biower pls

First, let me say that I'm loving the game when it comes to the massive areas, diverse environments, characters, story, lore, crafting, and the ability to have different world states. Overall, I'm having a great experience.
Second, I have to agree when it comes to the devs' obsession in wanting to reinvent the wheel to the point of removing good features. Innovation is great, go right ahead and look what's out there, and from your own ideas, and implement what works well. But why change core game mechanics to something that does not benefit the player?
- why can't my character be more proactive in attacking a target
- why was tactics so badly butchered?
- why can't I store collectibles (if there's a storage area, PLEASE let me know)
Inquisition is a really good game but marred with clunky implementation that makes it uncomfortable to play in.
