I would love to throw tomatoes or foul eggs... I hoped so much for another Dragon Age Origins, but i did get another Dragon Age 2

This is not DA:O, nor is it DA2, it is a game on its own. I am a huge lover of DA2(And hated DA:O, though I can't remember why) and I am VERY disappointed by the game in comparison to DA2.

Agreed, at least in DA2 you had sufficient controls and tactics

Cant believe this but after eventually getting the dam thing to play, pc and amd ( that was fun ). After an hour I have turned it off and have asked for a refund through origin which you can do for 7 days.

I can not believe the controls, so frustrating, don't get me started on the tactical camera.

I feel I have overpaid( would not mind this if the game justified the price) but I strongly feel all pc users have been had . Shocking console port is what's going on here. I loved the other two games, okay 2nd one, they kept using the same scenes but the fluid gameplay controls were brill. This is shocking.

Get your money back guys, vote with your feet and come back when they here us and make some necessary changes to make the pc game playable.

Agree with every point made.
Absolute mess of a game that feels like a shell of what once was. Such a shame.
Even the story doesn't make up for it...

It is strange that they make it so much damn wrong with the controls! And the Character-Creator. I think none of Bioware had ever heard of www.nexusmods.com! Thats what the fans want! More hairstyles, more or better presets, more hair colors. why didn't they make the hair color panel like the inner and outer Iris circle? Why didn't make a import code like ME2-3 that players can share their head morphs... I think no team member worked on any Bioware game before...

Let me tell you a tale of the Big Bears in the Hinterlands.

I had picked up Blackwall and after talking to him received his side quest to collect warden things. I geared him up, I picked his stats, then quick traveled to the Hinterlands, to the Forest Camp that was right next to one of the items. I was level 8, so I knew I'd be able to fight the big bears in the location. I thought maybe I'd run into two.

Boy was I wrong.

Right outside the camp was the first one, fighting an outlaw. I took them both out, then went around the corner of the hill to find a path up to get the warden item. When I found one, I climbed the hill only to be greeted by a big bear charging down it.  I was forced to the bottom to fight him. Took out the bear, started the climb again only to find ANOTHER big bear charging down at me, with a outlaw partnered with him against me. Took them out, this time cautiously went to the top of the hill. There was a random Ram that popped out of the ground, but luckily no bears.

I picked up the warden item, turned around to go back down the hill, and wouldn't you know it. A big bear was waiting at the bottom for me. I fought the bear and as soon as I finished it, ANOTHER big bear and outlaw team came down the hill. At this point I thought, screw it, run for the camp, quick travel the hell out of there. There is a certain point enemies will stop chasing you, which worked, but there was ANOTHER big bear & outlaw fighting next to the camp. I thought maybe if I ran through to the camp, the NPCs there will help me fight the bear. Unfortunately the NPCs are not programmed that way and walk around oblivious to a big bear ripping my companions guts out. I couldn't quick travel away because my companions were battling the bear, but I did discover that I could still rest and regain health and potions that I had lost fighting the 5 previous big bears. The bears health had a dent in it and my team was fully healed, so I figured I could take it out quickly and leave.

WRONG.

When I got my inquisitor positioned, and turned my camera's view, there was another big bear coming around the hill aside the camp, between the two boulders. I just un-paused the game to watch the beast body slam Vivienne and then claw the rest of her health away in a matter of seconds. At that point I just gave up and waited for the bears to eat everyone so I can just exit the game to get away from it for the rest of the day.

I have had groups of Templar's and Mage's spawn on top of me when I was just standing around trying to figure out where to go, or listening to companions talk.

I've watch numerous fennecs, rams, & nugs appear and disappear like ghosts.

I've found camps of random NPCS sitting around a fire, only for them to magically disappear into thin air once I get close.

The templars and mages random spawns are annoying but manageable, the random animals and npcs are amusing, but my god, those big bears!

I'm loading up the game right now and the game's last auto save is at the bottom of the hill with the warden item not picked up yet. I feel so sick to my stomach right now and I'm bumping the game down to casual from normal of all things, cause I just don't want to deal with it.

edit: bumping it to casual sort of helped. no bears came at me on the hill period, but when I got back to the camp, three of them tackled me at once. The one I expected to be there fighting the outlaw, the second one that comes around the hill, and this time a third new one that came up behind me.

edit 2: Also, they are Large Bears. Not Big. Not sure if there are Big Bears in the game, just in case to avoid confusion if there are.

Loving the game so far, Bioware did excellent with getting me lost in the world(the environments, levels etc). Sadly there are some issues with the game

1) AI Pathing - just something else at the moment, I was coping with it a bit as I could exploit it to get to higher levels when trying to jump on something above me as your companions would magically materialize on the level above and I would just switch to them but when Cassandra runs into me, pushing my character off a cliff to my death that's just nonsensical. Also auto barrier is basically useless when starting a fight,  as I play a warrior so i'm usually to far ahead and only I get the barrier or only some of the party does. And my damn grappling chain upgraded doesn't always work as the game places the enemy too far from the my character because reasons.

2) PC Optimization - I highly doubt Bioware thought about this for more than a fleeting moment, why the hell would you release a game for PC in this age and not allow people to bind things to their mouse?? It literally doesn't take that much to add this when planning the other controls, so for sure they can't say it does. Also no damn tooltips, just why? And that damn tac cam, on the fly I can think of improvements, need swivel/rotate/panning motion when at its highest instead of having us stuck moving forwards and backwards and allowing for obstruction to that already limited movement, I mean really did anyone really think about this over at Bioware

3) Design Choices(Severely Lacking in Common Sense)  - The game is truly great but Bioware needs some major help with playtesting, take Skyhold for example the undercroft you can't upgrade the armor/weapons your companions are wearing without taking it off first that is just tedious and it doesn't even make sense it's not like they're wearing the damn thing in the castle as evidenced by looking at them in their different spots, how in the world wouldn't you have space in your quarters, that's in your huge castle capable of outfitting an entire army for a damn chest to keep things in. It's all nonsensical, what demon possessed the Devs into making such poor design choices. In this area, the list goes on: No meaning to the damn companion approvals as you can't adequately quantify it without physical representation(like a bar in DAO), Choosing between only 8 abilities - what did the characters learn the abilities/skills and promptly forget them all the for the sake of a challenge? Just doesn't make sense, Biggest travesty of them all that monstrosity called origin(I kid  :D)

Oh and a sidenote, I once had to fight 16 enemies at once, 4 bears 2 prowlers, 2 archers, 2 sheild guy, 3 one handers and 3 wraiths because reasons

Side sidenote I won  B)

I've been lucky (or unlucky depending on how you look at it) to be "behind the curtains" on a particular pioneering MMO some years ago, before they were bought by SOE.  So I have a slight familiarity with the backroom, so to speak.

I'm fairly certain they knew about several of these issues beforehand, specifically the handicapable PC controls, and had already planned to patch it after release.  This was how it got through QA.  This is the way it's done, generally.  In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they had already started working on the bug priority list, patch schedule and the first patch before release once the game went to publishing.  People think that it's all release parties and bar hopping on the night of a release.  It isn't.

What they should have done was just be more transparent.  They should have said "Yeah, we know.  We had a publishing deadline.  Hang in there and bear with us.  It's coming."  Because they didn't, it gives the appearance that they simply forgot or axed it without consideration, QA had their head in the sand and they gave a big middle finger to PC gamers, most especially after their marketing folks made a big deal about it being primarily developed for the PC platform a few months ago.  Big no-no.  Historically, people are more forgiving the more transparent you are.

I'm just as irritated as the next guy or gal, but knowing what I know, I'm holding out for the first patch.   Oh, and as a post script, let me just say, I'm about fed up with developers trying to kill two gaming platform birds with one stone.  They should have taken a queue from Rockstar and released a separate PC version.  This seems to be quite the fad in an attempt to save money, but it's never really been that successful and normally ends up just pissing people off.

I would have happily waited for a PC version.

I'm playing on Xbox One and my only major gripe 20 hours in so far is a minor bug.

I will be out in the world occasionally when the dialog wheel pops up for a third person view conversation and I am unable to select any of the options. I can't even exit out of the conversation without triggering an AOA spell that is currently mapped to B on my controller. I suppose I could remap another ability there but the main issue is missing out on dialog content. This happened when I ran into Connor briefly in Redcliff castle and a couple of other not-so-memorable moments out in the world as well.

I just noticed the post above me mentioned not being able to upgrade weapons and armor that are currently being used and I agree that it's another minor inconvenience that, if addressed with a patch, would be nice.

All in all I'm really enjoying the game so far.

Does anyone know if there's a "General Impressions" thread on this board somewhere? I couldn't find one.

And something else I'd like to point out.  Those involved in creating something, such as a video game, are generally very protective and covetous of their creation.  They're often vested, incredibly so, not just financially, but in creative capital.  They WANT people to like it, to play it, to enjoy it.  These are projects in which they invested years of their professional lives.  You should see the backroom discussions that take place.  It's not uncommon for design meetings to get a bit heated, over something as trivial as a toggle in a UI, to use one example.  Each team can be quite passionate about their slice of the pie.

My point is, these guys and gals don't sit around in their offices content with half-assed products, only concerned about going home and rolling around in dollar bills.  Many of these folks take criticism personally because their production is a reflection of their own creativity and they get paid the same regardless of how well or badly a game does in the market.  Unfortunately, they can't come out and say "I know guys!  I fought like hell for that!" but I bet they do, taglined with an "I told you so," around the office snack machine and in meetings.  I'd bet a large amount of money that there were some, if not several, at Bioware that fought for classic RPG PC controls at release.

So as pissed as some of you are (me too, melee combat gives me a hernia and no one has slayed more air than I have), give the folks in the trenches at Bioware a bit of a break.  Just a bit.  They're often constrained by forces they can not control nor fight if they want to keep their job in the revolving door that is game design.

I said I would wait for DA:I to be released and look at what actual players are saying.  And I'm doing what I said I would do if I don't like what I see and heat.  I'm not buying.  Given the time and money Bioware have had to spend on making this game, some of the issues (on PC) are simply not acceptable to me.  No sale.

Love what I have played so far, the Hinterlands looks awesome!

Could really use some more long hairstyle options for the female characters, I am always for more customization options, and I can simple not understand why some of the character creator options is so limited. Would also like more skill/ability options for each of the skills trees in a specific class like more options for archer, might just be my personal preference.

Missing the auto attack as well and would be nice if we can raise the tactical camera higher, its a bit to close to get a good overview of the battlefield.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the game.

Make no mistake, IMHO DA:I is a fantastic game. It outdoes both DA:O and DA:KW in many, many respects. It's just that they totally effed up on PC controls. Really sad, because so many people put so much work into this, and it's one or two dunces, probably, that all but ruined the experience for many players, leading to the entire team's work to be dismissed as horrible.

I'd still buy it. I bought a physical copy(I think most people who are having problems are digital downloads but idk). The only glaring problems I've run across so far is the mouse response/unable to click, mobs spawning quickly and the hairstyles. I've been playing the game about 12-14 hours a day since release.

It's still a great game and yeah it does have some issues experienced by some, but I wouldn't miss it in my opinion.

I don't want to be very negative about every other feature in the game, yet I still played only prologue so far (so I didn't encounter respawns that I really HATE yet) I have several things that came to me very quickly.

1) I have played DAO + DA2 as mage - healer. It was a great disappointment for me when I found out that there's actually no healer skill tree available. There are some protective auras but in overall - you are depending on limited amount of potions.

2) Tactics and AI dont work well together. While encountering Pride Demon on Nightmare difficulty, it was really a nightmare. Not because of the demon but because of AI. My companions were acting really strange - tank (set up as "Protect - controlled character") was not able to get my mage out of shades that were spawning and hunting me. If it was scripted, then its not good idea - I have spent a SP to burn my threat generation by 50% in vain. The tank was also abandoning his fight and started running to me while I was not actually attacked. Second problem is with damage dealers - they both don't listen orders I give them in Tac-screen; I have ordered to Varric / Solas attack shades that were ripping my ass and they happily ignored these orders and kept nuking Pride demon. Tested several times, not a single shot done to them unless I set them up "Follow - character controlled"). If I remember correctly, there were options about their agression as well - it is missing so when I snipe a shade from distance, they immediately run towards them.

These two issues will be probably devastating to my gameplay as I relied to something that actually worked in previous games. How do you think you can beat a game on nightmare with bosses nuking insane damage to all party members without a single heal? I mean I know it is supposed to be NIGHTMARE, not INSANE BULL*HIT.

Besides this, I am looking forward to base expansion and I also like the graphics (even with fps up-n-downs). Oh and I would never recognize Leliana if they wouldnt tell me "this is Leliana" lol

I agree with the OP in almost every way.

I'd just like to add, 12 hours in... And the story and the characters are very "meh" so far.

2 hours of your Origin starting zone playthrough had more soul and spirit than 12 hours of DA:I.

The characters are pushy and unmemorable, they don't feel like real people with issues, but like puppets who were retroactively filled with a certain background story (mostly uninteresting).

So far, this is the first BW game in which I don't think I'll be romancing anyone, I simply don't care about the companions

(Sera is the one exception for me).

And while I'm not looking for a TERA-like level of hotness in characters, the amount of ugly hairstyles and ugly characters in general is astounding.

I haven't seen one single female character I'd call attractive in 12 hours of gameplay. At least there's Cullen for males.

These are minor gripes, and they aren't.

It's very hard to enjoy a game when you're forced to look at your character either in a ridiculously stupid hat (seriously, why the silly hats...? the rogue ones especially are just a complete joke) or at his hilariously ugly hair.
Both choices make my toon look like a complete dweeb, and yes, it takes away from me enjoying the game.

Agree 100%.

Flawed conclusion.

Inventing the wheel was an advancement, because wheels didn't exist previously. Inventing the electric bulb was an advancement, because it far outshone (... eh) candles or oil lamps.

"Inventing" dysfunctional control schemes is not an advancement, because perfectly functional control schemes existed before, and because they are, eo ipso, no better than what we had previously.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. / Never touch a running system (unless you have good reason to, obviously).

Based on my own experience in the business, this is wise.  This sort of thing is not uncommon with AAA releases these days.  I'm fairly certain that more robust PC controls were already on the list for the first patch, probably before release.  This is why they've spoken more about the graphics issues than the PC controls problem - because it isn't a problem.  It's a feature-based improvement already slated for patching.  Go easy.  Let's see the patch first before busting out the pitchforks.
