I would say the UI we got was a pretty good compromise.

How can you look in the mirror?

Jesus....

After ten hours of gameplay I started noticing that I was getting better with the controls.

Practice makes perfect I would say...

But when you have to practice to learn how to avoid hitting the wrong button at the wrong time you know developers have done something wrong.

 - Spacebar to jump?

 - Ctrl to pause?

 - WASD to move tactical camera? (instead of touching the borders of the screen)

 - No combat mode? (I always find myself left clicking when trying to loot or interact with objects and I always start combats)

 - No click to use a spell/special move? (It automatically gets assiged to the enemy your character is targeting at the moment)

 - Your character doesn't automatically walk towards the objects you tell him to interact with!!

A better question is why should we have to compromise?  Why not just make it correctly to begin with, then we wouldn't have to compromise.

..and the multiplayer mode is even worse and more pointless than the mass effect 3 multiplayer lol. No, seriously. It's completely pointless and meaningless and doesn't even have anything to do with your single player character at all, you actually need to make a new "mp" character for it. /facepalm.

Fans wanted them completely removed from each other and the developers listened. I don't think Bioware can be faulted in this case.

We're talking about two completely different games and circumstances.

The way bioware did it with mass effect was a colossal screw up. It doesn't mean the mutliplayer has to be absolutely 100% pointless though. My god these developers are ****.

After playing the multiplayer, I think the controls got completely shafted purely for the purpose of functional multiplayer, which is such a shame if its true but it really does feel that way to me after I played the multiplayer.

Just... Wow bioware. These people are horrible game designers. It needs to be said.

Everything in this game feels completely rushed and inadequate. Everything.

That's disappointing.  And not because I have any intention of playing mp, cuz I don't.

But in your opinion, are there and specific examples of pc controls that were compromised because of the mp functionality?

Personally I think the multiplayer is pointless.  At least in a game of this type.  However I agree Nayawk,  I had to edit a file in ME3 so I wouldn't have to play multiplayer just to get a good ending.   Then I realized there is no good ending in that game so when my hard drive was fried in a power surge I never resinstalled it.

Point is that Nayawk is right that they should not be connected because you should not have to do multiplayer to enjoy the campaign.

However multiplayer has nothing to do with the PC controls, which is what this thread is about.

I also believed this is the case, such as auto attack for example.  Same can be said about console controls, they were purposefully compromised for mp functionallity.

Yes I agree they f*cked it up bad with mass effect 3 having it be required for the best possible ending but that's not my point, my point was that design itself was crap , there are plenty of ways to make multiplayer meaningful without it tying into single player story at all lmao... my god people wake up.

if we could use our actual character or maybe buy an item with gold that we can use afterwards in singleplayer or something to make it not completely pointless would have been better than what it is now.

yeah sorry for the thread hijack. I was just stating that the controls are probably as bad as they are BECAUSE of the multiplayer, but who knows.

You're also the only one I've seen on these boards who thinks this pc control scheme was "a legitimate effort" and a not a lazy, uninspired porting of controls without any thought on common sense or respect (or awareness) for the previous scheme that worked perfectly.

To be completely honest, I agree 100% that the controls are indeed this bad because of multiplayer.  Things like auto-attack and automatcilly moving in range of your opponents might not work well there.  So they decided to  removed them in single player too.

If this the case then the designers are fools, either drop multiplayer completely, or make a seperate control schem that works there.  You do this by adding, removing or changing combat mechanics for multiplayer when needed.  Then add a messgae telling the player of the differences when they start multiplayer, plaus a tutorial arena where they fight the computer with multiplayer controls before enterring into real multiplayer.

Basically that simple.  If they need slightly different controls, then give them slightly different controls, how hard of a concept is that to handle?

That's because I try to avoid hysterics and see both sides of an issue.

Would I prefer a pure PC-style CRPG more like Baldur's Gate, but updated to 2014 standards? Yep. But I also recognize that this game is not that. I also recognize that a multi-platform game is going to have to make compromises to work properly on multiple platforms--and from my time with the game so far the PC controls aren't that bad. I've certainly seen worse (I couldn't even play Dark Souls 2 without using an autohotkey script).

Ultimately, it's up to each of us to decide what games we are willing to play. If a few issues are fixed, I think I can really enjoy this game (moreso than the previous DA titles, which--while they (both) had their good points--never really grabbed me enough to finish either of them).

Personally, I don't believe people like you are doing anything useful on this forum. I doubt Bioware pays any attention to the constant stream of PC gamers endlessly yelling at the sky because their game isn't exactly the way they wanted it to be, and in the process reasonable complaints get drowned out.

Probably not. Bio's devs, from what I've seen, have never really thought of themselves as "PC gamers." They're just gamers. PC, console, whatever. Hell, the DAI control scheme isn't too far from a typical PC MMO. But of course, MMOs aren't real PC games, right?

You must play different MMOs to the ones I have played. All the ones I played had auto attack, all my PC run to the target when I click on it and all have customizable UIs. In short they played and are controlled as I wanted them too.

However I persevered with the controls in this game and am 80 hours in and still find them to be a near nightmare to use and I loot very little as I play as I just can't be bothered fighting with the controls any more than I need too. However given that I've played 80 hours tells you how good the rest of the game is. But I also find myself limited to range classes, I find melee (rogue) has had all the fun sapped out of it with these controls, maybe a tank with taunts will be doable but I think I'll wait and see if any patches address the issues I have before trying another play-through.

There are a lot of blatantly obvious things that are wrong with this game and the potential fixes for them seem to be too ridiculously easy to come up with. Problems with controls, u.i, the tactical camera, basic combat functions and commands, the MP being useless, its ridiculous. The problems are so mundane that they shouldn't be there in the first place! These problems shouldn't exist.

How F*cking incompetent are you bioware?

I would LOVE to hear what their excuse is. Myself and others do not need an apology regarding the PC version of the game, but some basic understanding of how you can be this incompetent would be lovely. A simple, "We don't give a sh*t about actual real game design anymore." Would suffice.

It is pretty obvious though that menus/controls have been made just for consoles and no real care for pc. No tool tips even, the first thing i did when i started was mouse over the skills to see what they do, how they work and nothing, had to just test them i guess and later learn about the P button and gain access to it ;d

The inventory is clearly made for a console/controller also. Only 8 skill slots sucks too and makes no sense with the amount of skills. Even in origins i wanted more slots though it was a lot better there, it was fine ;d

Not so bad those things, but it is kind of sad. Other more important things also suffer for similar reasons i suppose.

The story was becoming quite interesting at least. We will see, I'll play more might do better now ;d

PC controls with a controller work fine. I've got about 60 hours into the game with it. If you're desperate to play, but don't want to wait for a patch, I'd recommend suffering a controller for now. If you want to pout and not play, well that's up to you too.

Indeed, i have been playing with a controller as well in the last few days and its a better experience than with a keyboard and mouse, much to my dissapointment.

Thing is, Bioware fucked up the controller as well on PC, you get no features like left arrow for map as you do on consoles, you can use your keyboard for shortcuts at all, its disabled as well as the mouse even in menus. How incompetent can they be to not even implement such rudimentary support.

It has nothing to do with pouting. Video games are a leisure experience and I work hard for my money. So, if I can not leisurely enjoy my games... then why would I not try and get my money back. If you bought a $15 ticket for a 3d movie and you walked in and the movie was not in 3d would you try and get your money back? Or would you look at the people that are walking out and be like "Just enjoy it! Pouters." Makes no sense to overpay for entertainment that you (1) won't enjoy (2) were promised a different experience.

It's called fiscal responsibility. For me, games are for leisure not to fill an addiction. I would love to play DA:I, but I don't NEED to play it, if it's a less than expected experience.

When you look at the key binding and realize that a single button is being forced to do 5 different unrelated things, that is simply a port from a controller.

Another issue is when several keys can have the same effect but not at the same time.

For instance, F is the action key which you use to loot. However, to 'take all' or in fact selecting anything in a menu requires space bar. Closing a book or letter you find is either spacebar or escape, but not F. Escape is best, because while spacebar closes the book, it also pauses the game.

It gets worse in combat where mouse buttons swap when you enter tac cam. In action cam, you select enemies with the right mouse button and attack with the left. In tac cam, these buttons are swapped. Doesn't make any sense.

There are several other issues I have, like preparing an AOE attack in normal cam, but being unable to zoom to tac cam while I'm holding this spell. You have to press escape first to cancel the spell, then go to tac cam, and then try to cast the spell again. This game feels like it was designed to frustrate players.

I would like SOME kind of reactivity, at least mention of your characters from MP, or them beeing scattered around in your base, whatever.

As for the UI, I find it hilarious that multiplayer has WAY better UI: By default, easier to see companions hp and barrier status, your mana displays on the bottom, as a horizontal bar, not some bullshit circle around your... Well, not a portrait. More like... Green hand... -_-
