Does "wait here" command actually work this time?

In DAO and DA2 if I told my party to "wait here" and then left to go scout or shoot arrows to lure a brute into an ambush or whatever, my companions would only allow a certain amount of space between themselves and the PC before they started following me anyway.  I absolutely *hated* this.  Does anybody know if this is still the case or will companions actually stay put this time when I tell my archers to wait on the hill and such?

I didn't have any issue with the 'wait' command in Origins, but I echo your description of the command in II; I'd say 'wait' and after about 15-20 paces they'd follow again.  The 1st time I tried it in Inquisition they didn't do what I wanted either, but then maybe I'm doing it wrong.

It does. However all commands are cleared everytime you switch character.

Positioning your ranged characters in range of melee enemies with "Hold Ground" is pretty glorious, if there are obstacles or chasams giving the melee a hard time reaching your ranged characters.

"Wait" or "Hold Position" functions nearly identically to the DA2 version. There is a hard leash range on how far the controlled character can move away from the group before they will either run to catch up, or more likely just teleport behind you. This absolutely precludes using most terrain to your advantage and pulling groups through choke-points or into other advantageous positions. Additionally, a "Hold" command will only persist, even in its limited form, while using the *ahem* Tactical mode. In the over-the-shoulder mode, they will follow you happily like a family of stupid ducklings.

To me this is the #1 barrier to actual tactical combat.  More than the lack of tactical camera (in previous games).  More than the lack of decent scripts to assign for party AI.  More than the lack of the ability to queue commands.

If I am *always* forced to take my full party into the center of every encounter area so that a mob of things can surround me, tactics always just become a point of spamming healing items and/or items that raise various resistances.  Every single fight just becomes a fight of attrition and "who has the most hitpoints?"

Yup, it took me a long time to discover that for no reason whatsoever the hold command disappears in over-the-shoulder view. I would spend a minute preparing for a fight, switch to a more convenient non-tactics view, and then all of my followers would immediately leave their posts.

I am glad someone pointed this out. The implementation is so bad I though it was broken and not working at all. I guess if you start in tactics mode you have to do the entire fight in tactics mode using the advance time feature.

I read in some other thread that a character can be assigned to follow themselves, but I won't be able to try it until tonight.  If so, this might solve part of my problem.

I just discovered this problem. this is a clunky application of controls to say the least. I thought it was a bug.

I have also discovered that I cannot place my archer on rocks. he wont stay there even in tactical mode. as soon as I click on another character while in Tactical mode, he moves.  I had to move him across 2 rocks by jumping one to another. He was in a prime spot. as soon as I clicked on my main, he automatically moved to the first rock, out of position.  I was like, What gives?

Okay, I think I am figuring it out.  You have to entirely turn off the behavior AI for all of your characters if you want to control them manually.  which is goofy because it cancels their will to take potions when needed.  not very good AI planning if you ask me. I am pretty surprised at Bioware. this is the first game ever of theirs where the controls suck....
