I'm not a fan of the low zoom either but I just had a thought that it does create an extra incentive to seek high ground. Put your mage or archer on a hill, zoom up, and direct combat from that perspective. Haven't tried it but it's a thought.

So did it fix the game freezing in the main menu?

Anyone have there Ambient occlusions setting set to none always? I can't seem to change it.

Also is there any way to apply good AA without the performance hit in the game on nvidia hardware? The post AA blurs the game, there is less jaggies but it causes blurrier textures, regular aa hits performance hard even with 2x.

Yeah, you can actually use nVidia Inspector to do just that. AA and much more, often works better than in-game stuff and looks better too.

Later on today we'll be implementing a hotfix for Patch 2 on PC to address graphical issues our players have been experiencing. This fix will ensure that the graphics settings are working correctly for everyone; however, players who are using lower graphics settings will notice changes to the visuals they are used to.

Before Patch 2, released December 9, shader quality for all PC users was being forced to run at Ultra. This impacted the performance of low-end machines and caused some unintended visual artifacts for users whose mesh quality was set lower than Ultra. As a result, users with Low or Medium mesh settings saw hair that was shinier than expected.

We attempted to address this in Patch 2 by binding the two settings so that mesh and shader quality were always the same. However, this fix wasn't properly implemented, and it forced shader quality to Low. We provided a command-line workaround Tuesday, but that still required players to ensure that the new shader quality matched their mesh settings.

This hotfix will correctly bind the mesh and shader settings and eliminate this issue. However, now that shader quality is being set correctly for everyone, players using lower settings will notice a decrease in the quality of visuals. This includes the removal of some features such as scars and freckles.

Most notably, the lower settings do not support blending of the age layer, so some users may notice that their Inquisitor (or custom Hawke) has aged considerably. And while this change is how it was originally intended to work, it could be understandably frustrating for people who created their characters before Patch 2.

If you would like to correct this change, you can set your mesh quality to High or Ultra. This will enable features that are disabled on lower settings, but may impact your framerate and performance.

We're sorry for any stress or confusion this may have caused, and we thank the community for helping us quickly identify and address this issue.

I had an issue where the game would freeze if I lingered too long on the main menu, but it seems to be fixed with the patch.

Will the hotfix also address the stuttering issue that myself and many others are experiencing?

Is it possible that the stuttering issues some players were experiencing before or after the patch were related to this whole shader/mesh kerfuffle? (I apologize for not using technical terms, but like Commander Ren Hoek, I am a layman.)

Seeking high ground seems to be more trouble than it's worth at the moment. One because of the uncooperative camera re: terrain, and two because often it seems that if you're in 'too advantageous' of a position, your character will refuse to do anything from that spot except maybe auto-attack (ordering them to use talents within range will cause them to move as if they're not in range) -- and going to tac cam will straight up boot you off of the hill you were standing on and teleport you to the nearest combat-friendly terrain.

Everything was going so well and then.... back to the DirectX errors (I don't need my device to be hung it can be average okay?) and the random screen blacking out with sound still playing w/ no error popup. It's so frustrating

I think I dodged a bullet. Origin was running all day, but nothing in my game folders has been modified since 21/11/2014, so it seems the game didn't patch. I haven't actually fired it up, mind you.

There would have been a performance impact for players who would normally use graphics settings below Ultra, as the game was forcing the shader settings to Ultra. I'm afraid I don't know enough to comment on whether this is related to stuttering that some players experienced.

Ok, now I'm lost in all that 3d tech stuff.

Could anyone please just answer this one.

If I've been using high\high for textures\meshes since the very beginning, am I even supposed to be affected by those changes and\or fixes?  I still had not installed the patch.

I'm not so sure about that.  Driver forced ambient occlusion is possible with Nvidia cards, but I think it uses a lower quality/accuracy screen space ambient occlusion rather than the more accurate "full" horizon based ambient occlusion that DAI has as its highest AO setting.  And driver forced antialiasing isn't going to look or perform better than the two antialiasing options DAI already has.

You guys 'n' gals deserve an attaboy for effort on this one at least.

I'm still gonna complain you know, but I still appreciate it.

BTW, will this stop the crash to white/black screen problems?

Thank you kindly Mr Pierse.  And that's the kind of communication - calm, detailed, considerate and not misleading - that everybody on this thread was eagerly waiting for.

Basically, the opposite of a marketing/sales pitch.

I suppose what you were trying to say is that if I'm already have meshes on 'high' I've got nothing to worry about. Right?..

Is it going to fix scars being gone from already made characters and not being seen on character creation screen?

No, you have to add that to the shortcut to see scars and what-not:  -ShaderSystem.ShaderQualityLevel Ultra. And set stuff and shaders at Ultra as well.

I also want to thank BioWare for their communication for the past 2 days.

Not that some people haven't been experiencing problems, but I have been happy with the performance and visuals I've had using 280x. Solid +50fps on mostly ultra and couple of high settings thrown out there. 2 crashes is of course 2 too much, but that's passable after +50 hours put to the game.

My main concerns are still about the PC controls and UI, though I'm very happy to see there are plans to improve it, as long as actions are also taken.

Hi Conal,

l've been in touch with EA regarding my own stutter issue where after several troubleshooting attempts they recommended I wait for a patch from BioWare and possibly an NVidia Driver patch. My game (during free exploration) intermittently stutters with increasing frequency eventually causing the game and all controls to completely halt, at increased durations with time. (by around 10 "freeze" seconds the game is completely unplayable which occurs approx 10 min into the session)  Graphics settings have no effect on this issue. (Low-->Ultra)

Here's a link of my recent post-patch  forum post with more details. Also the "Terrible FPS" thread at the EA Tech site contains similar reports

I'd  like to know if this issue is actually being looked at and if I should wait, given that I've seen others report similar problems. If not, I would like to know as well so that I can attempt more extreme troubleshooting methods (i.e. buying and installing a new (temporary) system drive with a fresh Windows installation and note performance on the same rig, etc)
