hmm... i'm not so sure about that part.
if i want something, i buy it. if the quality of this product, which i really want, is below my expectations (and those are formed by promotional materials, reviews), i'm not buying it again because i don't trust the manufacturer anymore.
now, if a person had a problem with ME3 and/or DA2 yet still bought DA:I, then this changes nothing, because that person probably will buy the next game.
i never had problem with DA2 - it had its flaws but i really did enjoyed it (i got it after it was patched, because i forgot about plaing games for a while); this is different - i was hyped by untrue information (promotional materials, reviews), i paid the price and i feel cheated, even tho i understand the restraints of tight schedule, new engine and all that. if they don't fix this (patch), i will not buy another game from BW/EA. i'm not angry - just amused at this point.
Indeed. After EA Games' DRM crap re: The Sims 2 (long story short, it was added after they said they wouldn't be doing it, halfway through EP releases, it was on disk, it acted like a Trojan, and it actually broke some computer systems) I decided that I was never buying a game from EA again. I warned my friends about SimCity's likely breakages and watched as they did their dough.
I had a single exception: DA2, because it was from Bioware (I did buy it at a discount, a while after release. Sophistry, but there you go).
Again, I made a deliberate exception for DA:I. After doing as much research as I could (watching all the twitch feeds, being a part of Keep beta, etc), I actually preordered the game. Even with the Australia tax. I never do that.
I will admit Greg Ellis going into studio was a factor. Good voice actors make very good characters. Just... I didn't say that out loud.
Sorry, guys, not happening again. Bugs, I'm okay with. Patches will come. Story issues? I understand, budgets stretch only so far. Having to pay for DLC that was deliberately stripped from the Vanilla game to sell? Bloody irritating, and takes the heart out of gaming, but okay, you have to make a buck. Having to be online for a SP game? Just... actually. No. I said no to that one. Because eff you, that's why. I have MMOs. I'll play them online, thanks.
Oh, geez. Can you see how low my expectations actually are? 10 years ago, I would never have been half okay with most of that.
But don't ever mislead me. I don't care if a corporation is answering to shareholders: you do your shareholders no favours, at all, by alienating your shareholders' customer base by saying things, while marketing, that turn out to be absolute bulldust at release. Sure, the shareholders got my money this time--but you've just denied them all future sales that might have gone to them, from me.
"Corporate interests" and "shareholders blah blah" do not excuse shoddy business practice. In fact, it should make corporations more responsible to know they're responsible for the income of many (both shareholders and employees), not less responsible.
As it is, they've lost upwards of $1000 from all of the past Sims 3, and future Sims 4 game and EPs they have not sold me (and probably would have) as a result of the original lie "we will not add DRM to The Sims 2". That's just to start. I never bought the ME games because I also decided, "no new (for me) franchises, even from Bioware." The good news is, I'm okay with that. I completely modded out my S2 game so it's now a totally medieval environment. Better than uncanny valley claymation any day.
Yay mods!
ETA: My 22 year-old son dropped by last night and asked me if he should buy DA:I on PC (his housemate has it and it seems to be fine for her--although she is using a controller on PC because she couldn't stand the KB&M--and it has started crashing for her after Patch 2). I said "unless they fix the UI/KB & M and the stability's improved, wait until it price drops."
He watched me play for a while and agreed. He is a console gamer, as well (his thumbs are properly sized!
), but even he is not prepared to do as his housemate did. "console and PC are different experiences, mum. They're supposed to be. PC should be better, not worse."
This from a member of the "console generation".
I'm so proud.
