Don't get me wrong, I loved SoM, but it was way too short. In fact I wouldn't even consider it an RPG.
So the length of a game determines whether its a good game or bad game? I disagree with that. Its also funny you should say you don't consider SoM an RPG, because i barely consider DA:I an RPG either....any longer that is. All the RPG elements have been stripped away imo, down to "who do i want to have sex with".
Here is the thing though, At least SoM doesn't try to be something its not. Its an action RPG and thats what it tries to be. It makes no qualms about that fact. DA:I, on the other hand, wants to be part action RPG, part tactical RPG, part MMO, part skyrim, part witcher, and it pretty much fails in most of those regards. Sometimes you need to stick with what you know and do best.....

Maybe he played it pre-patch 2 lol.

Hyperbole aside, let's do a count.
Name the RPG elements that SoM has, and compare it with DAI? You may find that DAI comes out on top, despite not exactly not knowing what kind of RPG it is.
While DAI might have tried to do a few too many things, half of the things you listed aren't exactly surprising..
Firstly, you said it tries to be part-skyrim, part-witcher, can you elaborate on this please? Because other than certain features (Dragons and GIants ala Skyrim / Submarine resource ping ala Witcher) I don't understand this part.
Secondly, as for it being part action-RPG, part tactical-RPG... Did you never play DA Origins or DA2? This is hardly a new feature for DAI... In fact this should have been 'expected' pre-release.
Lastly, even DAI trying to be an MMO, yes I may have felt like I was playing an MMO at one point during the game (Hinterlands grind) but that was really the only time and I'm never going to complain about having too much content.
Furthermore, having played swtor and DAO on a consistent basis in the past, the MMO-like features of Dragon Age games span all the way back to its roots. So I don't understand what the fuss is about now.
As for it failing, that's entirely subjective, and it's accolades so far disagree with you.

It was to me. They had a mega hit series on their hands. I even enjoyed 2 apart from some of the more political story elements, and so they are trying to completely evolve the game into what amounts, at least to me, as a different genre than DA:O and DA2. Thats fine of course, but if thats the direction they are taking the series, i won't be playing anymore of them. Just like ME1/2/3 were auto buys for me, i will most likely bow out with ME4, because I felt like 3 was starting to become too much of a departure from the series' roots. Just like Dead space 3 did from its roots, and the later F.E.A.R. games did and many more game series'.

Open world, action based combat. DA used to be closer to BG/BG2/IWD to me. A more tactical RPG. You could pause and issue orders or set up fairly strict tactics that your companions would follow nicely, and the controls matched that style of gameplay for me, but there were many ways to play the game. Now we're forced into the console way. Anyways, Now its closer to skyrim (elder scrolls) and the witcher, unfortunately, IMO, its no wheres near as good as either of those games.
Secondly, as for it being part action-RPG, part tactical-RPG... Did you never play DA Origins or DA2? This is hardly a new feature for DAI... In fact this should have been 'expected' pre-release.
No never played either one of them........ Honestly i don't know how to argue that logic that it should have been expected? when they are saying this is a PC game first and a console game second, and this is a PC game designed by PC gamers for PC gamers how exactly do you "expect" the game to play and feel completely different from the last 2?
Lastly, even DAI trying to be an MMO, yes I may have felt like I was playing an MMO at one point during the game (Hinterlands grind) but that was really the only time and I'm never going to complain about having too much content.

They are skewing the lines more and more with every release. wonder if a Dragon Age online is possibly in the back of their minds.....

I don't like MMO's and really don't think story driven RPG's make good MMO crossovers at all.
As for it failing, that's entirely subjective, and it's accolades so far disagree with you.
This could easily be due to the fact that a majority of people are playing DA on consoles and not the PC (dragon age's birthplace), which could easily mean, bioware couldn't care less about the minority of its gamers that are on PC and unsatisfied because thats not where all the money is coming in from.
If they cleaned up the controls and UI then i wouldn't have near the issues with the game, but there are quite a few other design choices i disagree with as well like no healing spells, the crafting system, the guard mechanic, no DW warriors, weak tactics system, bad AI to name a few.
After reading up on this, and spending the better part of 24 hours doing some massive troubleshooting (needed to sleep at some point,) it turns out I'm also affected by the draw distance problems.
You know, I'm not even angry at this point. I'm still not ready to rage, nor refund the game. I do have faith that the company is working their butts off trying to fix this. However, I think more than anything, I'm a little hurt. Look, I'm not going to sit here and pretend that I know an awful lot about coding. Yet, I do know that issues like the one behind draw distances are at a fairly basic mathematical level. Which makes me ask: How did they miss this? Just..how?
I can forgive a lot of faults about this game. I know not all bugs are caught immediately and that games can have issues at launch. I can forgive things like the tactical camera being awful and the suicidal AI during dragon fights. I can forgive and deal with the realization that this game's controls likely never had a M/KB truly in mind (my gaming mouse helps a ton.) I can forgive some of the framing issues in certain scenes, I can forgive the clipping.
I can forgive design decisions that I loathe, such as lack of armor at Skyhold. I wasn't even that angry when I found out that it's as simple as a line change at the end 00 to 01 to get the armor working even in cutscenes (seriously.) They could have given us a toggle with it being truly that easy, but hey, this is something I hope they add later.
However, this? This draw distance issue? I'm a bit hurt and confused as to how one of my favorite game companies let something like this get past testing. I also am not going to EA bash as some excuse. I think EA has definitely earned some really hard feelings, but I think they are far from Beelzebub. Not everything is their fault, and I don't hate the publishers. No, this was on BioWare. This was on their development team, and no one else can take the blame here. They had around 4 years and 2 delays to catch something like this.
I will give BioWare time and chances to get this worked on. I'm hoping this will be a few patches and not requiring an overhaul of the game to the point of needing to reinstall. That being said, I will say that this is not a PC game for PC users.
I never thought I'd utter the words, "I should have bought this on console" in relation to a BioWare game. And no, it isn't because I think PC is better than console. I don't think one group is somehow better than the other for preferring a setup for playing games on. That "PC Master Race vs Filthy Console Peasant" crap was meant to be a joke, and one that's now turned into junior high levels of nonsense and bickering. I just prefer a M/KB setup on a desk. <shrug>
No, I say this because, despite some issues I have read (and I know they exist, believe me,) it just runs better on console. At least current generation consoles. The controls are smoother, the framerate is stable and the game still looks beautiful.
Look guys, I haven't started Inquisition yet. I'm still replaying DAII in preparation for it. However, I do own Inquisition on Origin, and I am concerned about how it's going to perform. I might be one of those fortunate people that will experience very few problems. Or I might be like one of you, and the game will be unplayable. I'm actually kind of scared that I will be the latter. But I seriously doubt that BioWare will leave the game in an unplayable state. That's just inconceivable to me.
I almost forgot to mention the "best" part. The "best" part was the forced auto-update by Origin. About four months back, right before I turned off auto-updating, I noticed that my ME and DA games would get tiny updates from time to time. I thought nothing of it (except when some of the ME2 ones broke my DLC, which was irritating as hell), but I made sure to turn off auto-updates. Well, guess what?
It had auto-updated yesterday morning, and may I say, that's a "lovely" ad on the title screen you've got there, EA, considering I've literally never downloaded the MP DLC or even touched the button in-game. ![]()
Ahem, sorry about that. Well apparently something went weird. When I went to open my games library in Origin, I got a message: "Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition installation failed. Please reinstall the game." Rolling my eyes, I uninstalled and reinstalled the game. I found it very weird, considering I hadn't touched the game since April. Whatever, right? See, after installing DA:O but before I attempted repair, I checked to make sure that Inquisition would load. That's how I noticed the ad.
I ran a repair on DA:O afterwards (as I always do after an Origin digital install) and the application hanged at 48%. I had also noted the auto-updater had been doing it's thing on the ME games, which always makes me wary. I swear, if I have to fix the DLC that I legitimately paid for one more time....
Then, I noticed my computer starting to get really crunchy. Once the app started to hang, I took a look and sure enough, my CPU was almost maxed out (95% with no other apps running but Origin and Skype,) and shutting down was even a pain. I had to force close Origin. When my computer successfully logged out of Windows, but had refused to shut down, I walked away for about 5 minutes. I noticed that my HD was paging away, but I figured it would catch up.
Nope! I had to force my computer to shut down and power off. My hardware is all pretty new, and the game is on my secondary HD (SATA, for the record.) After that, it prompted my search to figure out what was going on. I did a lot of research, disc analyzing, more research and more digging around in my files. Once I finally hit upon that thread EA tech forums, everything clicked. And I found out that the people behind the Origin service are also working on the problems that have crept up with the app itself.
What a mess. It's been an aggravating 36 hours.
Edit: I hate to say this. I honestly do, because despite the problems, I had a great time with the game itself. I look forward to playing through the game again, no doubt. So bare all that in mind.
As it stands, I would not recommend this game to any PC user at this point. In fact, I'd tell them to buy it for current gen console or just to hang tight for awhile. Until the draw distance issue with Inquisition is resolved; until the more PC friendly options come down the pike (which they'd said that they are going to do) and until Origin fixes their mess, I would tell a player to stay far away from this game on the PC.
That just sucks. ![]()
A. It doesn't add originality to the game that is suppose to win GOTY. (Including the fact that this idea does not belongs to them)
B. Who said it's not broken? It's a hell and tedious at it. Pinging like a freaking submarine for the course of entire game. At the end you'll do it just as a reflex. A simple, constant highlight of nerby items would be better by any means.
Seriously, I keep pressing V in multiplayer and shout curse words because I forget it just displays team screen there ![]()
And yeah, if the system works, don't brake it. IT WORKED REALLY WELL, when you pressed the button, and everything around just highlited itself.
Now... As was said... We are a sad, sad submarine...

This is what happens when you hire console designers to make a pc game.
Bioware's "For PC Gamers by PC Gamers" was a colossal fabrication.
Period.
Why should they do it differently? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Umm..they already did. In the last patch.
Look guys, I haven't started Inquisition yet. I'm still replaying DAII in preparation for it. However, I do own Inquisition on Origin, and I am concerned about how it's going to perform. Same here. I had it installed at 12:01 am Nov. 18th. Have not played a second of it.
Have no desire to until at minimum the next (first real) patch.

It did this to me as well. Sick of DA:I and went off to compare Origins! Install didn't fail but it wouldn't run without reinstall. Have Bioware been snorting Red Lyrium? Starting to worry that games imitate life!!

Honestly, I don't think that's what happened. I do believe that they meant that at the time and I know that PC designers do work on the game. See, despite my issues, I'm not full of anger, nor do I feel like I've been deliberately lied to. I think that juggling with a total of four consoles between two generations immediately necessitated more stress testing for consoles As a side effect, this led to (unfortunately) designing the game with gamepads more in mind. Which was understandable, and I won't get angry about that.
The thing that sticks in my craw is that, as a result, PC really fell by the wayside.
When it comes down to it, yes it's a product I've paid for that has some large flaws. Yes, I'm unhappy and I have no problem expressing this. Maybe I'm an outlier, but I refuse to get that mad over this. I'm would never say no one has a right to be angry, nor do I begrudge those that are furious. So please don't mistake me there. This is just what I'm doing and I'll leave others to it. At this point, there has been far more articulate posts on the various other issues that I don't feel like I have much left to contribute.
At the end of the day, it's a video game, and this time of year is stressful enough. I still have faith in the company, even being while being disappointed. I'm not going to let a video game stress me out that much with the holidays in full swing. I'll hang back and wait, for now.

We need a meme for this.
Get Origins on steam and save yourself a headache.
As someone that used to have Origins on Steam, fair warning: There is a bad memory leak in Steam's version of DA:O UE that isn't present in the Origin version. Save often, as your game will crash after a couple of hours of consecutive play. I switched to the Origin version after getting fed up. An EA CSR helped me do it, so I didn't have to pay for it twice. He also confirmed that was a known issue. Once I switched services, the crashing stopped.
I'm still waiting to buy the game since the SLI flickering and white fog bugs are still there after patches.
now over at Helixmod and Nvidia 3d vision forums, people are working at a 3d vision + SLI + widescreen + game stability fix.
with Bioware's and Nividia's seemingly inaction, gamers just take the buggy mess into their own hands.
such is the nature of PC community for sure, but it's disturbing for me to see these two big guns fall so far behind the community in bug/stability patching.

Oh really? I wasn't aware of that, I purchased the UE a couple of years ago on steam and played consecutive playthroughs culminating in hundreds of hours. I remember having a few crashes, but no where near as often as DAI. Good to know what the reason behind it probably was.

It isn't too bad if you don't have a marathon of DA:O planned, but if it's a day off and you want to get some serious hours in at once (3+ or more,) save often. If the game shows signs of getting cranky, save and exit. After it closes, you can fire it back up and continue onward. This can and does happen with Awakening as well as the other DLCs, so heads up to Steam users in here.
I can tell you that the save files and the mods transferred over from Origin to Steam with no issues, in case you were curious.

Yea I've done the transfer thing before, but the other way. I transferred ME1&2 from Origin to Steam so I could delete Origin off my PC.

Heh, that was when I got rid of Steam and it's gone from my PC. Long story, but let's just say I'm very unlikely to use that service again if avoidable. I picked up the ME games on Origin originally.

I think its exactly what happened.
The game was designed first and foremost for consoles, right down to control and UI and PC was then hobbled together as pure afterthought. They realised that it wasn't up to par and put the PR video "Built by PC gamers, for PC gamers" together to maintain and build hype.
I feel 100% deceived by Bioware with the game I currently have installed on my HD. I don't even believe it can be patched into suitable shape.

Oh the conspiracy theories in this thread are very elaborate. Please, do tell us more of your first hand experience at Bioware in which they made the decision to develop this game "first and foremost for consoles". Were there objections from the remnants of the PC loyalists within Bioware's staff? Or did they all fall to the dark side and conspire equally to ruin the game for the PC gamers?

Simply playing this game on PC using KB&M (with half a brain in tact) is enough evidence! the game simply was NOT designed to be played on a PC using the conventional control system.
Why are you even arguing against this, troll? What do you think you stand to gain?
We played Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 on PC. Those 2 games worked very well using KB&M and we were given a control scheme and the ability to bind keys as we wished. The mouse mechanic was also purposeful in the game, as was the UI.
This is NOT the case with DAI. I know it's all a bit technical for you, but does this make any sense or shall I draw you a few picture you can color in with your crayons?

I play with a KB/M setup and I don't have any issue with this games controls. It plays very similar if not identical to previous entries. So, there goes your argument. Boom goes the dynamite. I advise you use less "we" and more "I" as you don't have any right to speak for all PC gamers. Oh, and I suppose I missed the memo where I was to be informed that the forums are only for people who nitpick and complain to Bioware. What on earth was I thinking? Oh, and the fact that your rebuttal is laced with insults and angry rhetoric does you little credit. Surely it can't be too difficult to conduct yourself and get your point across in a civilized manner.
LMFAO!!! The game plays similar if not identical to previous games? Seriously? What are you smoking?!
If that was the case, this thread would not exist and countless comments all echoing the same concerns would not be present. But because "we" agree that there are some very real issues here, "you" are probably in the wrong forum, so "I" suggest you shuffle on out of here.
