I'm with youtuber Angry Joe. Dragon Age Inquisition is a 9/10 at its core, but I'd knock it down to 8/10 on PC for its lackluster keyboard and mouse controls. I'd definitely like BioWare to address those issues and provide a better UI and control scheme through a patch.

I got really high last night to celebrate a fun, eventful Christmas day. The only thing I wanted to do while high was play some Dragon Age.... After another 5 crashes in 15 minutes I gave up.

From this thread and others like it, I get the feeling that some game developers think that they're tacitly in the business of selling computer hardware, accessories and consoles too. If this is the product of reinforcing the bottom line, I say *poo* on them and this would be yet another reason why I never pre-order or purchase a game "on launch".

It's interesting because I have a 3 year old PC and either than frequent crashes in fullscreen mode initially, updating my AMD drivers and switching to windowed fullscreen mode eliminated almost all the crashes/freezes. The build by itself seems to be very stable on my PC - one of the lucky ones it seems. I have no stutter or anything either.
Considering the only stable AMD driver on release was 14.11.2 BETA, I'm guessing most of the issues are driver related, and it's more complicated the more advanced your PC actually is (like most of the folks with issues are those with high-end PCs that they upgraded for this game - especially Nvidia users)
My main complaint was the PC controls. However with the walking mod which has made a HUGE difference for me and many others, I can now recommend the game. I just can't suggest pre-ordering on PC from Bioware anymore in the future due to the obvious console favoritism and the fact that modders fixed the issues PC players were having. However, either than the exec's decisions to neglect its PC fanbase, I personally found the environments, story sounds, music, and acting in this game to be of Bioware quality.

Okay guys, you can all curse me, but i thought that the KB+M controls were better than the Xbox 360 controller, also i didnt find any diffculty in adapting to play for it. Note that I am a RPG fan and have played most of its best games. Well actually I think its pretty weird to you guys to think its unbearable to play it...Its for the most a little annoying at the beggining but that awkwardness dissapears for me in the first 2 hours of the game. Try playing it as if its not bad and you will get used to it....i think =)
This was how I felt when I played Kingdoms of Amalur - Reckoning. The controls were "different", but after a while, you get used to them. The feeling that they're counter-intuitive never really goes away, but, you get used to them as they are. Likewise, this is how I began to feel about Skyrim over time. When I stopped trying to view it as an RPG and embraced it as an Action-Adventure game, my experience changed. I stopped looking for coherent storylines, meaningful conversations or decisions and just played the game as it is. Of course, this isn't to say that I stopped thinking the game was the buggy, shallow, overrated mess that it was, but certainly, my experience changed. Not for the better... Just different.

Maybe 8/10 for console. It is unfinished and skeletal for PC. Scrape into 5/10

My PC is three years old and for some bizarre reason I have no problems running this game. However, I hate the keyboard and mouse controls very much.

Interesting... It seems that you and Jackal are having similar experiences. This makes me wonder if it has something to do with your PC specs being akin to the consoles. *shrugs* Obviously this is just conjecture.

Aye, and in my opinion and from my experience with the game since release; all this CPU/GPU crashes/discussions and about the inbuilt problems of the game code - it's has to be driver related. Newer cards/PCs causing problems probably because they haven't been tested as extensively as the other cards.
Since the walking mod came out I've logged quite a few gaming sessions and immersed myself quite well, and no problems, either than minor quest bugs which can be solved by a quickload.

Actually, I've seen a lot of folks who report three-year-old computers say it runs well and I've been wondering whether it's coincidence or correlation. I've also seen report of a 2.5-year-old-computer and a four-year-old computer playing without problem.
To further speculation, my Nvidia GTX 640 is running between 24-30 frames. That IS a lot like a console, no?
I haven't installed Patch 2 yet. Waiting for a couple playthroughs before I tempt fate.

I'm running on patch 2 with hotfix, my AMD Radeon HD 6870 is somehow running at very decent framerates using medium/high to ultra settings (due to the low 1gb graphics ram it seems large textures are the main performance huddle, as other effects can be jacked up with little performance loss) in most areas - performance drop in redcliffe village but that's it. However, I have encountered 3 CTDs (non driver related, my previous crashes had "driver stopped responding" errors) thus far with the patch, but it's minor and spaced out.
On release I had zero CTDs once I updated to 14.11.2 drivers and started playing on windowed fullscreen mode, so pre-patch is still the best from my experience. However, pre-patch doesn't have the walking mod (which only supports patch 2 + hotfix).
I doubt I will be upgrading once patch 3 hits as personally I have a feeling Bioware's walking functions (if it even makes it for patch 3) may turn out to be inferior to the mod, as with most games it's mostly either a toggle OR a hold button. Now I have both and controlling my character immersively like I was in Skyrim. Having both means that I can "relax" by switching to walk mode and using shift to run forward in short bursts, or get "energetic" by switching to run mode and using shift to slow down around corners/ledges/loot/etc.
Patch 2 is worth it for the walking mod in my opinion, if you wish to brave it.

I found your post extremely idiotic. Are you really advising people to "try playing the game as if it's not bad" so they will get used to it? What about the devs implementing a patch where the pc gamers can press a special key (let say "O", for oxymoron), on the keyboard every time their game glitches, freezes or for when they feel totally frustrated with this badly ported console game on their pc that can make a little sign appears on the screen with the message "Don't worry, keep playing, you'll get use to it"? One thing is to use one's imagination to be able to immerse into a fantasy world. You can't ask pc gamers to stretch their imagination to the point they imagine a game being well developed and seriously implemented on pc when it has been not.

I have had exactly one CTD. I had just booted the game and the very first action I took was to try to enter the war room. Crash. Not done with a playthrough; I know it could happen again at any time.
Thank you for the moral support re: Patch 2. As it stands, I am one of the class-traitors who switched to 360 controller as soon as I figured out my dislike of the controls was becoming true hatred. Consequently, now that I've finally learned to use the controller, analog antlers and all, I'm going to keep it for a while. It lets me walk and loot more easily. I would like to have the search ping upgrade, though, so maybe I'll try patching after one playthrough not two.

Man... If this is the prevailing circumstance (older machines play better), it would suck for all those who went out and bought new machines for this game. If I'd gone against my will (not pre-ordering or buying on the launch date) I would have been one of them. *Yikes!*

Honestly though I don't blame ya, if I knew how to use a controller properly I would too!
But nah, grew up with WASD, can't control any other way, hence the mod was a godsend for old school gamers like me.

I know, right? I almost did do some upgrades for DAI but I thought, "eh, maybe I can squeeze one more AAA game out of this rig." An unexpected triumph for frugality!

I'm just glad you found a way to play comfortably. Mods for the win.
I WASDed my way through both previous DA games and one MMO but I evidently can't handle not having click-to-move in concert with WASD.
