Well, I just installed DA Origins again with a few mods. no helmet hack, Dragon Age Redesigned, Dragon Age ENB/Lighting enhancements, and advanced tactics.  How amazingly refreshing it is to have tactics again. :>

Truth time, you also did the natural bodies didn't you  :P

Precisely! Despite not putting much (if any) stock in GOTY awards (regardless of who awards them), DA:I may very well be a deserving winner on fronts such as storytelling, world and character design and so on.
But the thing about games is...they're not books. They're not movies.
They require that extra connection between audience and product. If that connection can't be made, then the product has essentially failed. And I know, I know, some people can make that connection and I am really really glad they can. But the fact that some people can while others can't due to myriad technical issues, some of which outright prevent people from playing certain aspects of the game should never, ever be looked over.

I know I'm opening a can of worms here, but have a look at the notion of privilege:

Some people have the privilege of playing the game with few, if any, problems. They then disparage the people who complain about not being able to play the game saying that they should just deal with it, get used to it, get better equipment, change their thinking etc etc etc.
In an alternate situation (albeit a completely different one, and I apologise for using this analogy...but whatever!), it'd be like an upper/middle class, full time CEO of a multimillion dollar company turning their nose up at someone from a low socio-economic background and saying "well it's your own fault, stop being poor and be more like me!"
That attitude rubs me the wrong way.

It sickens me.

Anyway, that was a tangent and a half.

My original point was going to be that there are enough elements of the game that could quantify its GOTY status across the board, but the public relations officers, the marketers, the CEOs of BioWare sure as hell don't deserve those accolades. Credit where it is due goes to those who were passionate about creating the game world, not those who waved it about in its unfinished state in those godawful PR videos, making up stories about how it was made By PC gamers for PC gamers.

QFT.

And the funny thing is, it's the exact same kind of people, using the same half-assed-women-studies-101-rethorics, that have been beating every gamer over the head with this 'privilege' thing for five years...

If you happen to like the Witcher series' aesthetics and atmosphere, you're basically a White male supremacist for some...whatever

Sorry for derailing the Bible of PC Gamer Suffering.  When are we gonna escape from Egypt?

Off-topic I know [edited, just in case chaos ensues :P] But let us not discuss that for now.
That said, I appreciate the Witcher series almost as a parody of sorts (especially the books), much in the same way that GTA could be considered a parody (though I think the Witcher does a far better and more clever job at it).

I feel a bit...silly (?) for introducing the idea of privilege into a thread about computer gaming, particularly relative to bugs and stuff -- but I did anyway, whoops!
Anyway, I digress! The events of the past...however long it has been has resulted in me watching a Lets Play of Baldur's Gate 1, a game that I've started many many times but never finished. Once I'm done with that, I think I'll start BG2 (again) and finally finish it. Now there's a game that I'd gladly pour hours upon hours into to relieve me of my current disappointment in Bioware...maybe.

Off-topic I know, but I do prescribe to ideas of privilege/womens studies/feminism in many facets (I can thank my degree for that :P ). But let us not discuss that for now.

Yes, let's not. Because we all know we don't want to get into "ethics in gaming journalism." ;)

Even if, on an actually serious note for a moment (as in jokes actually aside), forget indies; all of the "professional" gamestop/previs/marketing for AAA games (including this one), + GOTY for this game--really is about ethics in AAA marketing gaming journalism that should be raising more eyebrows than it is--as in: there aren't any.

10/10, my lily white... cough.

Waaaay too many spoilers there. Bethgael.  Also, great take on how to do things (on the PC).

I have "been away" for 72 hours...not of my own accord.

Abso-bloody-lutely!

And you know, as I said, maybe it is deserving of it. But Bioware sure as hell better not accept these accolades whilst being blissfully ignorant (deliberately ignorant?) of the problems that so many people are having!

*edit* But they will.

You're spot on!  Sapkovski's books are a parody of every trope in high fantasy and folk tales, that's what makes them so great imho.  And you already got your degree, so more than 101, fine by me :)

I'll take a look at Sapkovski's work....didn't know.  As for Bioware's work?  Have they patched this crap yet?  The game is shelved, and I was ready to call it a total loss, when the Moderators banned me for 3+days...now I'm not sure if I'm pissed off enough to give a care.  As Colin Quinn would say.

Bottomline IS that we get this game as "playable" for PC gamers as possible.  I don't care what happens to me.

LOL   I probably would if I wasn't on metered internet connection. :)  I really would like to install the better textures mod that's available but it's almost a gig in size, and I only have 2 gigs a month to use. Although I am running the game on the highest texture settings so it looks very crisp.

Not going to happen without resorting to extreme measures imho: legal action and PR pressure on Twitter or a combination of both.

Maybe it's best to forget about this game altogether?

Peregrinus - Do you play this game with a mouse and keyboard OR a controller?  Also, on what platform, if you'll be so bold.

@Ashen nedra - I'm trying....and maybe THAT'S why I've been censored many times.  Four warning points and a ban from this site is at least an acknowledgement that somebody is watching these forums....it's just not proactive.

I use NBAIO (All-in-One). I like the different options per race/gender (and for the record, Bioware and waxers--hairy chests are wonderful), so next month, when your gigs reset.... :D

Modders add so much to the games.

What should one do?  I'm an unhappy consumer that was lied to.  What recourse do I have?  Come here, and complain, and get summarily discharged/deleted?  That was fun.  I wonder IF the Moderators here really understand things?  Are they empathetic or do they just see sensitive politically-correct "buzz-words"?  Seems like the latter.

I wish that this game was playable.

Try not go too much off-topic or we risk thread being closed thank you.

You know BioWare..- there is something called PR in game developing. You should try it too and communicate with players.

But you know what- I know you won't- becasue you have no way or will to fix anything. You thought you will just slip with it. Now you are silent becasue there was no plans to fix all of the mess and poor content. You lied to players, and you lied HARD to PC players. Now there is no other option for you but to stay silent- because you are too lazy to fix mess and EA do not want to hear about "free" content for us that should have been in game from day one- they want you to charge $ for it. But you know it, right? We won't pay even one dollar for things that should have been here! That you were promising!

I hope next year you will have financial problems- best wishes from me :).

Silence is also PR, you know- but negative PR...

It's the deleting/censoring that's getting under my skin.  I understand that I didn't get a game that I was promised.  Now I can't complain about it?  Censorship sucks on any level and doesn't sit well with me.

Late to the party, but just wanted to add my voice:

Although we bought the game 2 months ago, my wife and I finally had time to start playing last night. After spending an hour in character creation and getting through the opening dialogue scene we were confronted with the kb+m controls at which point my wife threw her mouse down and walked away screaming that the game was unplayable for her and that we wasted  $70 (x2). I shut down mine, started researching the issue and realized that we won't be playing DAI for a while. Not having click-to-move is completely unacceptable. I'd want a refund if I thought I could get one at this point. We aren't gamers. We buy/play 1 maybe 2 games a year. Getting burned like this means that may drop even further. When 15 year old Diablo II has a better UI and KB+m controls, you know something is wrong.

^^ Yes!  That's basically WHAT we're all going thru.  Thank you....just for reiterating what apparently needs to be reiterated!  Bioware needs to start caring about their PC gamers.

I TOTALLY get now why I see angry posters with one line posts and quick answers....they've been through the grind.  They've heard and seen the BS.....  I usually lay back and take in the scenery and try to figure out why my $70 was taken by a Bioware gypsy in the middle of the internet night.
