Harbinger and Cyan, and others; I think you are all right. Especially if your addressing the business and mechanical side. The point of my post just to try and find where the stark differences in the story telling came from.
I didn't think DA:I was garbage, but I thought it was exceptionally mediocre... To the point where as Minsc88 said, I got to the end, and just wanted it over. I didn't care anymore. I get the feeling that BW was trying to cater to EVERYONE, and in so doing, catered to no one.
And its really not good if writers claim that they will retconn elements of the world, to tell a tale that they want to tell... That sounds like a catastrophe. Like fan-fiction... No wonder I felt that the grittiness of this "dark fantasy" was missing.
I will say this, Bioware is a master storyteller. However, as stories progress, it's just not economically feasible to branch out to far without affecting the central plot. Inquisition feels lacking (to me) because the console and MMO mechanics that are in play. The war table (which still doesn't show the edges after patch 3), the impersonal side quests and the resource gathering don't have any real impact on what you do, except for the current level you're in. Why have all those resource-gathering missions for Skyhold when it was never in danger. The inner circle quests were great and it helped me understand my companion better through dialogue. Did I care about them like Sten, Oghren (yes, Oghren was a buffoon in Awakenings, but I like him), Shale (DLC, not cool EA), Wynne, Alistair (easily the best voiced male hero of all time for me. I wanted him to lead Thedas over a Cousland.), Morrigan (one of the two best voice jobs ever done. She stole my heart as a video game character. Yeah, a video game character) and Leliana (mmm... girls with those accents get my attention now and I'm happily married). The most emotional sadness for me in Inquisition was the decision to let the Chargers die or screw up the alliance with the Qun. The high: wooing Cassandra. Origins... MASTERPIECE. In short, mechanics got in the way of their brilliant storytelling and it was felt.

Agreed, when the gameplay is lame, the story is not told effectively.

Exactly, You're just getting through the motions to just advance the story and hoping it coincides with your earlier decisions. Origins graphics looks so dated compared to Inquisition, but cosmetics doesn't make a brand. It's the entire product. Storytelling, game mechanics, replayability, DLC, modding and immersion are the basic ingredients to a great RPG. Bioware had all of these down in every product until EA bought them. Each product is now missing one or more of these ingredients and yet, they won Game of the Year. So, I come to the bitter conclusion, that I'm old and out of date with the current generation. My recipe for a great game doesn't include multiplayer, joysticks or smartphones. My way of thinking is of the dinosaurs. I'm old and apparently, out of touch.

By the way, I'm glad you're still sticking around. I have this feeling that we are being heard after all. I'm a stubborn optimist. Even if they aren't listening, I know I am not alone in my opinion. I feel validated by the community and sometimes small victories are just right around the corner...

The real problem with the game of the year awards is the fact that they where given by publications and websites who have been raking in cash from EA in the form of incentives and ad revenue. All in a effort to generate hype before the game is released.Heck we live in an era of gaming where several publisher and studios have been caught red handed paying people to write positive reviews on sites like meta critic. That should tell you everything you need to know about the state of gaming journalism.

Either that Cyan or they're looking to ban those of us most critical of this PC Debacle.
Oh, and just to show that we aren't the only ones making their voice known. This is from PenquinFetish. A BSN poster and Reddit Mod for DAI (I think)

Read the latest on IGN about Windows 10 and XBox. MS is destined to rule what we play and how we play it!
No wonder Laidlaw and others were in bed with MS.
How much did they pay??

PR. Public Relations. Bioware is in desperate need of one. When you look at GOTY award and the profits, who the hell needs PR?!? Bioware. Bioware. Bioware.. get yourself a savvy, straight-talking PR. EA is cunning, not dumb. They'll get it right.

At this point I have to ask... with proof modding this game can be done, is there anyone out there that is aware of a mod to change back an inquisitors voice? I suppose it'd be more accurate to ask for a mod that allows voice changing period, but I want it solely to undo the damage BioWare's shitty coding did.

We need DAGurus here. It does help on the Sims forums toy know that EA people are reading and posting. Can't we just have a couple of DAGurus here, we'd appriciate it, even if we do complain about the game a lot. You could tell us if something a lot of us are concerned about is being worked on or not, ask us for information the team might find useful in sorting things out and so on. It may not make a huge difference in game play but, it sure as heck will in how we all see the Bioware Division of EA.

lol. 20 sec into a cut scene, Directx hang. Reload. 12 sec into same cut scene, Driectx hang. Reload. Black loading screen before cut scene, Directx hang. That pretty much sums up what 90% of my time playing DA:I has been. Now I'm simply ignoring the story mission and doing lame side quests. Because the cut scene in question needs to complete in order to advance to the next story mission.

@ Matrix girl..
I really could give rats assssss about console players. Flame intended. I play on a PC by choice. I invest a shite ton of money, time and investment to play on my system. My children (ages 17 to 28) grew up playing on consoles. Call me old, but consoles seem for a younger generation. I am retired, I work a job to stay busy, I game on a PC to have fun. So if a company wants me to spend my hard earned money, they will supply me with a quality PC game. When a company says "By PC for PC" that is a bit of advertising, but now it is not true, a Console port is not "by PC for PC" . I want a computer game that allows me to play with a good keyboard and mouse. Heck while I am Bitchhhhhing I want a PC game that allows me to move the HUD, Inventory, map and actions to a 2nd or my 3rd monitors. I have the power to do these things if the game PC developers would make a game. I would spend the money to buy such a game as well. I will NOT buy a game to play on Xbox or any of the other consoles.

Every organization has their loud-mouth that needs to be silenced for the better of the company. PR and HR should understand this and EA gets this despite what many think. EA's customer service is pretty good. Origin is actually awesome if you give them a try. I've called Origin many times and they've called me when they call lines were full. They value their customer base and they improved it through money-back guarantees and knowledgeable staff. I mean it. I really like Origin's customer service and EA's technical service. When a studio pumps out a broken game, they're the frontlines in immediate help and they do an outstanding job. Bioware USED to be like that. Call help for Old Republic, and the tone in the background, tells me I called an overseas call center that has training manuals, but no personal involvement with the company. Sometimes you go cheap to satisfy the top brass and keep the workflow going. Anyway, Bioware needs a strong PR/HR presence and put their employees to work in fixing issues instead of belittling their rabid fanbase.

"Yeah, you're wife might very well be into that sort of thing..." (I'm paraphrasing, but no. No. No. No. No... no.)
I also believe MatrixGirl just believes the same way I do and we're a generation apart. It's cool to know that our next leading generation gets "it."
