Still no word on a patch addressing the performance issues.

Just had a thought! This issue with DAI may be more complex. We have the AMD vs NVidia drivers. But we also are aware that the game files are compressed then extracted as you enter an area. If your hard disk is fragmented or has any errors or is low on space then this is going to be the first area to crash.

The reason I put this forward is that I have very few crashes, etc . Had DirectX errors early on. A few random CTD's. But I do have a 4TB RAID 5 system with autodefrag. Buckets of headroom too. Just an idea. Maybe completely wrong but worth looking at. If a game crashes the first thing you suspect is graphics.

Speaking of Hard Drives.

Maintaining peak performance from your PC systems, aside from the software side of things, is to ensure the health of your hardware. This includes:

1. Motherboard

2. RAM

3. CPU

4. Hard Drives and SSDs

For the first three, I use the utilities that come with the motherboard, to check on possible overheating areas. Since my system has a low powered GPU, the fans run on "silent" setting (I hate noise). That means I need to verify that the fans are running and the general heat state of the system.

For the storage health  status I use a program called CrystalDiskInfo 6.3.0.  It displays the S.M.A.R.T. data generated by modern storage devices. which include temperature and error counts.

link: http://portableapps....skinfo_portable

I also  use a Task Manager  like utility called Process Explorer. It has a few advantages over Microsoft's Task Manager.. one is information on where the process is run from(ie: folder name). I use it to check the interrupt count. It should be zero. Anything else and your system slows down.

EDIT:

Forgot to mention that you can use Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Performance Information and Tools to

verify  if your rig is capable of running DAI. It will give you a performance index on memory, cpu, graphics... etc. Take it as a general indication about your rig vs the DAI requirements.

Bummer... My fps still has a way of bouncing like crazy sometimes. Like there's some 2 second bottle-neck my PC needs to get through, and then the game runs smooth until the next drop.

Funniest thing is when I launch the game, sometimes the templars and mages do a little "speed run" in order to keep up :P

Yes, I experienced that as well.... playing catchup I guess.

Postem. In practise, when using modern amd graphics cards containing gcn tecnology (like xfx 295x2 i use) it makes sense use mantle instead direct3d 11 in da:i. Using xfx 295x2 and 1080p monitor and using mantle all other settings left unchanged i got using internal benchmark about 30 fps in average more than using direct3d 11. I don't know how accurate that internal benchmark is, but that performance increase is enough to keep me using mantle. I don't understand why someone don't use mantle if he/she can, especially because direct3d seems to be full of bugs in this game.(Or/and nvidia's driver support to da:i is substandard.)Anyway, using mantle is much smoother and faster than using direct3d 11 on my system. And yes my system is not an universal standard, i know it wery well, thankyou.

@ Homer - By re-mapping the Tac-Cam to the same Keys that I use for movement, I am able to 'scope' a trail around obstacles for that character. This allows me to know which paths are better suited to take, and can be altered by returning to Action mode and performing some other action. Not certain if this will help much, but it does aid me a little.

I did this about two hours into the game. Remapped movement to standard WASD five minutes in, because QWES felt incredibly unnatural -- does any game aside from Inquisition use QWES for movement as default? Then remapped tac cam controls to match character controls.

The basic controls for character movement and for the tactical camera are fine, as far as I can see. They're perhaps different from previous DA titles, but that's hardly a bad thing per se. Major problem is that the tactical camera behaves unintuitively and too often directly impedes gameplay. For example, in Emerald Graves and the forested section of Suledin Keep, the camera frequently gets stuck on trees and branches. Going into tactical mode with the camera under a branch or tree causes dizzying camera glitches as the camera tries to figure out what elevation it's supposed to be at. Moving the tactical camera across such overhead objects is either impossible -- they act like invisible walls for the camera, or results in unexpected perspective shifts. So to use the tactical camera in such areas, I must navigate around invisible objects while seeking angles that will not be blocked by leaves or other near-camera objects. This is simply bad design.

Similarly, the tactical camera has issues panning through doorways and between rooms; panning through a doorway usually causes unexpected perspective shifts and similar camera behavior, and in some cases is simply impossible.

This does not make the game unplayable, but it does break the tactical mode in numerous instances and so makes it somewhat less enjoyable for folk who like to directly manage their party.

Understand; I actually use these discovered obstacles as a way to also avoid them in Action mode, as they may still impede progress. As I use the same Keys, I can recall vaguely avoid these trees, sheers, etc.

I also use this to plot directions for other actions. When fighting Dragons, and have chosen to manually use Fade Step for mages, using the Tac-Cam to place the relative direction for the jump is helpful, as I wish to avoid the breath weapon or other attack of choice.

Not saying this is better than a free cam would have been; only some Silver Linings I have used in making this set-up work in my games.

People you should stop thinking that the game will run better on AMD hardware BECAUSE consoles runs AMD hardware.

The console architecture and PC architecture are completely different and both consoles run with different operating systems and different hardware, despite similar architecture, and for the last, last generation consoles are completely different architectures.

Excuse me, good sir, but where did i say that IT WILL run better on AMD? I just think, i still believe it, that AMD has less problems than Nvidia, beside the game being all-plattform-friendly. But i also said, i always say this, you should read my previous posts, that the crashes are way too random NO MATTER WHAT RIG YOU HAVE. And spending more money to change from Nvidia to AMD or backwards is not worth it.

I do believe in crazy theories tho, but that i keep it to myself :P

Not at all. Even in Silent Hill there was a happy ending

Ohhh, cmon! The happiest ending in Silent Hill was the UFO one, rigt? RIGHT?

Thanks again, Sartoz, i´m having issues with the temperature of my CPU. Gonna change the thermal paste (i think you call it that way :P ) cause when i´m playing the CPU temperature goes to 70-80 C and the PC in general makes a lot of noise.

That's happening to me and I am blaming it on the unzipping of files. (That's my non-technical, gut-feeling theory) Once the area is fully unzipped, the FPS catches up (everything goes to double-time and then back to normal)

Exactly. Double-time, and then back to normal. Annoying, but at least it looks funny  ^_^

Even if I run the game in the lowest possible settings, the bottle-neck still happens just as often, it's like it doesn't even care if the graphics are ugly or amazing to look at. So yeah, the theory of it being some kind of unzipping of large files makes sense, as soon as they are unzipped it runs as it should. It doesn't happen a lot, but I'd still like it fixed, dunno how though

Since we're on PCs, I wish Bioware would just let the game unzip once completely after an area is revealed. It would surely decrease loading times and increase performance because the processor isn't tied up decompressing files.

I pre-ordered DAI because I really, really loved Origins:  the character development, the dialogue, the story, the variety of relationships and the combat -- killing monsters is soooo much fun!  DA2 felt much smaller and it was harder to care about the characters, but still I liked killing the monsters.  700 hours and 200 hours gameplay show the fun I had.  But this game has been a huge disappointment simply because I can't play it!  In three months time, I've only managed 13 hours before I give up in disgust -- I hate the WASD control system and have avoided it for 20 years!  And trying to use a controller, for me,  is simply nerve wracking and awkward -- and as a senior citizen I refuse to be stressed out by being forced to use one!   But this game was made for PC, right?  Well, I disagree.  I paid a premium price for a much hyped game and can't play it.  That's not right.    I keep looking here in the forum and on Nexus for some sort of patch that will allow me to use my mouse and keyboard the way I have for many year; hasn't happened.  Why?  There have been 4 patches and none have addressed the complaints so eloquently posted here.  Why?  I have to go on YouTube to watch videos about the game that I WANT to play.  Really, Bioware, you need to rethink your customer service model.  Sorry for the rant, but I really do feel cheated.  I watched the video Bioware posted, read the Announcements and got really excited.  Ordered the game as soon as I could and then waited anxiously for its release.  Champed at the bite when it was delayed.  Finally got it, and couldn't play it.  Oh, well, YouTube here I come.

Maybe that´s the reason the game is so CPU intensive? Or i´m speaking nonsense?

There are utilities let you change your fan's operating parameters so that it ramps to higher rpm's at lower temps.

Most video cards come with them these days and there should be on for your cpu fan, check the utilities that came with your motherboard or the manufacturer's web-site.

Stay positive. I am going to give Bioware more time to make it right. It helps that games that I wouldn't even looked at are turning out to be favorites in my Steam profile. EA isn't stupid, they're cunning. They're making changes and looking at the future with a lot more scrutiny than they did four years ago.
