If you don't mind broken mods and super shiny hair, the patch is pretty good! I just got a bit annoyed that my graphics seemed to drop, though I have them on Ultra. I think it has to do with the Shadow slider.

Okay. This is a longer post, so bear with me.

For anyone here who isn't aware:

The new shader settings have replaced using meshes/textures for some graphics and scars and whatnot. They have been designed to improve stability for people who want to remove the "shiny" and have trouble with performance when meshes are on ultra, and will actually mean people can put their meshes/textures on LOW and their shaders on HIGH (or above) and get a similar "look" to meshes/textures on ultra/ultra. Before people get annoyed with Bio, please play with your settings for a while--taking special note of your shaders--for best result, they should be at "high" or above.

Check your shader settings before saying they broked it, guys. :)

The images below are the ones I produced during the P5 beta to compare the differences. (AMD card)

Pre Patch 5 (no shaders):

Settings:

Mesh: ultra

Texture: ultra

Shadow: Low

Shaders: (did not exist)

Spoiler

Patch 5 (shaders added) comparisons:

Settings:

Mesh: Low

Texture: Low

Shadow: Low

Shaders: Low

Shiny! :D

Spoiler

Settings:

Mesh: Low

Texture: Low

Shadow: Low

Shaders: High

(Note that this is virtually identical to my pre-patch picture despite all of my mesh/texture settings being on LOW instead of ULTRA)

Spoiler

Settings:

Mesh: Ultra

Texture: Ultra

Shadow: Low

Shaders: Low

(matches my pre-beta settings but with low shaders)

(note that the details are not great--and shiny--check eyebrows particularly--with shaders on low even though all meshes are on ultra. NOT as shiny as "all on low" but will be distinctly noticeable if shaders are not adjusted before entering an existing game--remember they will be on "low" as default, usually)

Spoiler

Settings:

Mesh: Ultra

Texture: Ultra

Shadow: Low

Shaders: High

(matches my pre-beta settings but with high shaders)

(no need to add anything except to say that if you have a low-performing machine, this is not so much better than "all low but high shaders" that you can't adjust your meshes/textures down to enhance game an fps performance and let the shaders do the work, instead

Spoiler

And another, different char,  with scars:

Spoiler

Hope that helps.

Thanks! I never said they broke it though, just the mods. I thought maybe the patch had reset my graphics, and I have them working just fine now!

If you want to use mods, simply move everything from your merged folder and paste into the patch folder, then delete the empty 'merged' folder.  Do this at your own risk , and always backup your saves.  Working 100% for me.

Sorry about that. I should have mentioned in my post that the overall post wasn't aimed directly at you, personally, but was to explain the shaders and whatnot, using your quoted comment as an example of the few others that had been posted. Apologies for the misunderstanding. :)

(I added a line up there to clarify).

Oh I wasn't offended or anything, just worried my post might have implied that. Thanks again though, your settings are perfect! :)

hmm..  I'm seeing no shader option in the menu which was part of patch 5 after overwrite.. I saved the patch 5 files so I'll reload that and report back.

Ok, so I found the reddit with the workaround that seems to work.

yes, just the "Data" folder not the "package.mft" file though

yep, the package.mft cant be overwritten.   did you backup  your patch folder?  Thankfully i did , so I overwrote it and then copied over just the patch folder and shader setting is there like it's suppose to be.

If you didn't backup your patch folder, you can probably do a repair, and then do it.

I backed up, then copy and pasted my stuff in the mod folder to the patch folder, deleted the mod folder after the files were overwritten and it's working perfectly!

I was only going to like this post but decided to quote instead, well done Bethgael.  The work you have done here is clearly something that Bio should have ensured accompanies such a critical change in how the graphics portion of the system changed.  Should be a sticky in my opinion as there are bound to be more people confused by the change in their game and having to resort to trial and error (unless they happen to find this post) to get their config to where it needs to be for their system.  So many problems so easily avoidable with documentation.

Question, is there no readme with the patch that describes this?

Aw, thanks.

If anyone wants to link directly to the post, btw, they're free to. :)

There is a patchnotes_en (and other languages) in the Inquisition folder (default C: > Program files(86) > Origin Games > Dragon Age Inquisition > Support ). However, it lists the notes as seen on the blog.

"Removed the connection between mesh quality and shader quality and added a Shader Quality setting to the Graphics options."

Probably not specific enough, eh, to say exactly what it's supposed to affect (scars and shiny and whatnot). And the file's pretty well hidden. ;)

Ah, I remember the days when you'd finish installing an update on a game and the last thing the installer would ask is "do you want to view the readme?" I'm old. ;)

Was really hoping for black emporium  to be a part of this. I've put all playthroughs on hold until it releases. Guess it's back to Darkest Dungeon for me.

They also seemingly broke the fullscreen trapping your mouse cursor in the game when you have dual monitors...

I used to have it trapped after swapping from full screen to windowed and back to full screen, then the mouse would be trapped forever more in game and didn't get off the game and cause you to click on your second desktop and minimize the game...  Now no matter what I do, the mouse isn't trapped in the game.

Maybe gaming in general needs to take a few steps back until it realizes how far it has fallen..

I know this is somewhere on this site, but:

Not sure what it means now that Gaider is gone from DA.

PS:  I know thing about this Patrick Weekes.  But his attempt at humor leaves something to be desired.

@Bethgael: while i agree, one should see for themselves the outcome, we should also recall the 1st patches.. Remember they had inadvertainly set everything to ultra, no matter the chosen settings by us.. When fixed, those who 'thought' they already were on low, lost all scars, features, etc? Why its still being done this many months later(glad still being fixed ocfourse), with no care shown for the initial release, or prior.. Its a slap in the face of your consumer, to knowingly sell them broken crap, in order to make a christmas sale/GOTY garbage...

Again, im glad its finally being looked into.. But i still get the feeling we're being strung along, until we fizzle out, and play other stuff.. Less going into the patch than intially though, and more PR "we'll be adding it in a later patch" talk, everytime we hear news of whats in it.. (and hope you didnt take this as an attack at you personally, i only used your post as a stepping stone... My anger is 100% on EAWare, and those who defend the practice without thought for others, and the industry in the long-term..)

Edit: gosh dangit! Just opening Origins, auto installs the darn patch.. I wasnt even going to play DA:I, i was gonna play DA:O.. sigh.. guess I have to find out the hard way, if this patch broke anything this time.. Upon further inspection, i cant even see whats been "updated/installed"...Not during, nor after..

Auto attack works. You can use abilities while it automates the basic attack between them. It does however disengaged after each enemy, so when fighting a group, you have to keep engaging it again. So yes working auto attack, could use improvement IMO, but it does work.

I see you are trying VERY hard to land a job at Bioware. It's a fantastic effort, keep it up!

BUT unfortunately....Auto-Attack is a pile of steaming crap!

Bioware could not do Tac Cam right. COMPLETE failure.

They failed to implement a walk toggle to even remotely rival what community modders achieved months prior to the fact

Mouse mapping is only partially successful, but it breaks other keybindings in the process (LOL)

Mouse Look is a joke, with almost every action disabling it

And now Auto-Attack, which is nothing more than elements from the Tac Cam cunningly exported into Action Cam. IT DOES NOT WORK.

People have been complaining about the Skyhold outfit since BEFORE the game was even released! The modding community managed to find a way to keep armor equipped at Skyhold.

Bioware? They STILL don't know how!

Bioware is making absolute FOOLS of themselves with this level of sheer incompetence AFTER they've had people Beta testing and giving them feedback!

So maybe you should re-consider crawling up where the sun don't shine? You're really wasting your efforts.

If they were not owned and funded by EA, Bioware would have had to pack it in by now. And it's all back-fired on them because they completely dismissed the importance of the PC version during the development cycle.

How can you possibly defend all this crap, from a company that made DAO and DA2, and now....THIS?!
