(Cue up Baldur's Gate opening scene and music)
I was a casual gamer for PCs and fell in love with Bioware's Baldur's Gate. I wanted to play a D&D game at the time and it had been a long time since Strategic Simulations had put out a title. Then in 1998, Baldur's Gate arrived and I became a super-fan. Tales of the Sword Coast was another delicious meal. I investigated Bioware and read about Fallout. I was a Knight Paladin for the Brotherhood of Steel and bought Fallout 2 without thinking at full price. Icewind Dale and its sequel... bought without question and MAN! I LOVED IT ALL!!!
(Cue up NWA's Straight outta Compton)
Neverwinter Nights and the modding community break world records. YO. That's Bioware the original gangster. Not only did Bioware say we can be our own Dungeon Master, but they were confident enough to release DLCs. There was no way it was going to get better. Jade Empire, Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel are released and they were straight-up dope. I own them all. Preorders were done without question.
(Cue up Dragon Age Origins trailer)
HOLY CRAP. I was not only a lifelong fan of everything they put out and now we've got a MASTERPIECE. This is the evolution of Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights and Knights of the Old Republic. They have it all. A complete PC experience. DLC. Toolset. Replayability only a crack addict can sympathize. UNH. Bioware. I love you and we're silently married. You're my secret mistress.
(cue up Mass Effect intro scene)
Bioware, you took me from Fereldan to this futuristic galaxy. I love you.
(cue up Awakenings expansion)
Whoa. What's going on? Okay... it's still cool.
(cue up Mass Effect 2)
I'm sorry I doubted you at all. Oh my goodness...
(cue up Dragon Age 2)
Hrm. Slightly more console, but I love Hawke's narrative. No modding? Hrm.
(cue up Mass Effect 3 ending)
Okay... someone is hitting acid or really just made a very poor decision. Kinda like coitus interruptus. Then... the free expanded DLC ending put a cigarrette on it. It was a little awkward.
(cue up Inquisition)
We're not a thing anymore. What's up with that.
Oh yeah, Ubisoft stepped into the D&D license and did something so bizarre that I had to reformat my hard drive. I remember and I will never... ever forget. Ubisoft just about killed me off and solidified me as a Bioware fan.
And as far as NDA's go... EA would get a lot more fans... yeah, fans... not just forced into this relationship... if they let some Bioware leads some 'slack' about what's going on besides patch notes. The beta testing was great. It has helped bridge the gap of communication without the hyperbole. NDAs could be a major reason why there is a disconnect. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that is what is happening.
