normally I too would give the benefit of the doubt, but that video was released a month ago, so the developers should have been well aware of what their game is and is not.

I didn't notice that - at that stage the problems should have been rather obvious :(.  (from past non-gaming project experience I can remember meetings whereby we manage to convince each other that things are "good to go" even though they quite blatantly aren't).

Weirdly, even within that video, there's under 40 seconds talking about PC, and the video even ironically ends with the story of 'pressing A'.

I just worry that people are bit too negative about developers/reviewers:

- bioware didn't create the game on PC that they seem to have wanted to.  People have every right to be upset, complain and burn bioware effigies etc.  Even excluding the promises, the quality of this product on PC is "not great".

- the game itself is still pretty great.  A lot of people enjoy it (even on PC), and reviewers will score it on "what it is" not "what it isn't".

- there is clearly a spot opening up in the market for 'great PC RPGs' as bioware aren't in that market.

I'll take the positives out of it, hope that bioware can make this a better game on PC, but also hope that more developers see the opening for new PC RPGs.  If bioware aren't scratching an itch, it's an opportunity for someone else to do it.

Then, when all that is properly polished, I will call this the perfect RPG game.

So far, I see more than the controls and bugs holding it back from beeing near "perfect". Hybriditis. But I agree that those issues removed would make it a smoother, more fun experience. And I´m holding off my playthrough to give the game a fair chance with the fixes coming.

Talking about Metacritic reviews...this guy:

"Never felt the urge to voice an opinion on a game but it is only because I loved Dragon Age Origins so much I felt I had urge Bioware to change...

This game is not playable at this moment on the PC, the frame rates are very inconsistent and there are large amount of stuttering. I was running this game on GTX 780, I was getting 20-40 frames playing this game on medium setting which is just unacceptable, I was extremely impatient and went and bought a 980, frame rates are slightly better but cinematic locks the FPS at extremely low level (30) which a ton of stuttering occurs on both the 780 and the 980... I worked around the game to get the frames to 60 Frames during cut scenes but there is no work around for the stuttering and extremely unsatisfying framerates playing this game.

The game is extremely clunky, the combat has took a giant step backwards. You have to mass click if you want to auto attack because on console that's normal for them, but they forced it on PC users which makes no sense and restrict what you can do in game. It hurts my wrist just playing this game. If you're playing a warrior and you knock someone back and you're holding down attack button because your hand hurt, too bad now they're out of range and you're waiting out a long period of pointless animations. If you're playing a range class, have fun spamming click button like you're playing minesweeper or something

No longer can you click and move because that doesn't exist on consoles. If you click anywhere your character does their attack animation which is very long so you're sitting there wasting time. No longer can you click on loot to pick them up because that doesn't exist on consoles so you're forced to run up to them and click open button which is so daft as to why they decided this should be forced on PC players. (Btw if you miss click you're attacking and waiting out the animation again). Used to holding down mouse button to change your camera angle? Too bad watch this attack animation for couple seconds. Can't see the rift because it's bloody in the sky and you want to change your camera angle? Watch this cool attack animation.

Oh, the AI is stupid, have fun issuing the same command for your party over and over and over again because they have some kind of short term memory problem and refuse to do what's ordered. Telling your ranged character to get out of melee range they will run back into melee range because of unknown reasons. Revive teammates? Haha I rather auto attack! Thanks computer.

The menu is unsorted mess, have no clue what is going on there. It's DA:O style with fair amount of items, but unable to sort though as it uses a weird DA:2 menu.

Extremely disappointed on how this turned out, it was a fear I always had when Dragon Age 2 came out. It was still good and improved on some parts but you can see it was departing from what made Dragon Age great. I thought I can patch everything with technology, bought new video card, bought a new mouse, bought a controller (Game doesn't recognize controllers on PC for some reason). Severity disappointed"

Some of this problems seem specific to his hardware, drivers etc. but the stuff about gameplay and PC controls? Have to agree.

And this guy

They pulled a total Kingdoms of Amalur on this one. It was originally designed to be an MMO... and it shows.

If you were hoping for something like Dragon Age: Origins, this is not that game. It bastardizes a lot of it by dumbing down the tactics, skill tree/attributes (you can't even assign your stats anymore).

So all the metacritic bad reviews are not just trolling.

-Can't remap mouse buttons, extra mouse buttons not supported.
-Can't ''click to move''
-Can't ''click to loot''
-No screen-edge mouselook
-No mouseover ability tooltips on your action bar
-No key to select all party members at once

ANd this one, How come no on ementioned the PC Controls? Was part of the contract to get access to the game the fact that it had to be played with a controller?

Tactical camera 5 feet off the ground. Whats the point. We aren't playing to look at grass.
Click to move is gone. so you end up spending a prodigious amount of time trying to edge closer to the items you want to pickup when 1 left or right click should do it. The same goes for attacking when not in tactical camera mode. so unless you are playing ranged you are always in tactical camera mode which restricts your view, or you are missing your targets.

It is a pity because I was really looking forward to this game. This brings another issue to mind, how come all these game reviewers leading up to the launch never once mentioned these crap pc controls.

In a way, it does kinda feel like it was designed to be an MMO for consoles. Where you actually controlled a single character, just as in the Multiplayer portion.

now now, nobody here is blaming anyone. I hope. I, for one, try to understand what exactly happened.

Was it the pressure to meet the deadline? Or maybe the lack of PC QA tests? Maybe someone stole all mouses and they created that beautiful art with controlers (kudos!)? Or just new direction in PC game design (scream of terror)? Maybe there are too few programmers to write the code (instead of dialogue, camera controls, dev tools, scene generators, whatever)? Was it flaw in the design and they just built upon the prototype (yeah, we'll fix this later, now we need to do something cool for the presentation)? Maybe there wasn't suppose to be a PC version but someone insisted to expose the product to less niche market... Or what?

So bugs and technical problems, have no impact on the quality of a game? Is that what you are saying? Then why patch at all?

Ofcourse they do, but handing out 0/1 reviews on metacritic isn't the way either. The fact that they acknowledged them and are working to fix those problems gives me hope.

I like to compare it to skyrim, another big open world rpg wich had just as much technical problems at launch. The big redeemer there was that modders could fix the game themselves and add so much free content.

What i'm basically trying to say is that despite the problems DA:I is a good game, and it deserves a chance, it's not like it's the first game to launch with several problems.

I am one of those peasant PC users, and take no offense to the term because my money is just as good as yours. I would be happy with DA:O again. Just change the story. I would also be happy if any successful (incl. playable) game was not considered a one-off work of art needing to be constantly one-upped for some award seeking mentality.  Okay but that is just this peasant.

That was not what i meant, i game on pc aswell, i was replying to the ridiculous notion that console gamers care more about graphics then pc gamers, they are not the ones shelling out lots of cash to upgrade their graphics cards every 2-3 years.

I am also one of the thousands who are frustrated with the PC controls and limited camera angles. Still no news on when to expect the patch, or what specifically will be fixed?

So, what would be an appropriate review?

"Couldn't bring myself to get through the tutorial in four different attempts due to completely unintuitive, clunky controls, 7/10"

There might be a good story in the game, but UI/Handling isn't an independent aspect of rating a game; if a good story is inaccessible due the controls being a complete clusterduck, it safes nothing and it doesn't warant any stars.

As for them "acknowledging" anything, so far they've acknowledged some nonspecific complaints and not given any list of items to fix. Once we know whether stuff like auto-attack, click to move and camera handling are specific items they aim to address we can talk about giving them the benefit of a doubt. Until then, 0/10 for a game bought and left to gather dust on the shelf is exactly the rating it will get from me.

IMHO, yes.  "PC optimization" was #127 on the list of tasks, and they got to #100 when the game was released.

- it's a console game which EA/bioware were nice enough to port to PC.  If you treat it like that, then it's a great game.

- if you treat it like a PC RPG, it's a [censored] mess.

I think DAI will (rightly) be "game of the year", and I quite enjoy it.  On the other hand, I'm not really enthused to buy any expansions or sequels as there's a lot of really annoying design problems...  and I don't think bioware have much interest in actually fixing them.

I think people who compare it to skyrim did nit give skyrim enough credit. They should have also compared it to State of Decay

DA3 is beautiful on the right system and characters/story are good and you feel like you are part of story

Both skyrim/state of decay and other games destroy this game in other areas
-mooks/minions have personality. A wolf/bandit in skyrim has 1000x more life than a da3 counterpart
-interacting with environment. Buildings etc are bland and boring. No animations for door locks, treasure chests, picking up iron, no sitting . This is next gen
-no smoke or fire sound affects from buring buildings. Barely any wildlife sounds or wind howling. Compare bleak falls barrow entrance area and its got a lot more atmosphere than most of hinterlands. Same goes for state of decay buildings vs da3 buildings and thats a 360 cheap game

Draugr vs demons-im scared of demons cause they fight well but monsters need lairs . Where are the memorable outside battles where templars are raining arrow from second floor towers. Dao and da2 had memorable mini boss battles. Ive cleared big chunks of hinterlands and havent come across one. More cutscenes and more tension early on. Go back and remember those early villains from dao to da2. The bandits demanding a toll, dealing with the carta etc, demon child in shale dlc, etc. other than the "glorified clerk" theres not a lot of good memorable bad guy wiki entrys for begining chapters

Exactly. I gave Dragon Age: Inquisition zero stars because it was unplayable. I guess my review should have been along the lines of "Couldn't get past the starting area due to constant crashing, but those 5 minute intervals of gameplay were top-notch. 2 stars!"

Without specifics regarding fixes, or even an approximate date for the first patch, I wouldn't dream of giving EA Games or Bioware the benefit of the doubt for more than a few days after a game's release. Their track record doesn't warrant it.

Now I am worried because these are the SMALLEST problems I am having that you listed:

  • Driver support
  • Hitching and frame rate issues in cutscenes
  • Feedback on keyboard and mouse controls
  • General user interface optimizations for PC

I would rather you fix the constant crashing every 20 seconds, and the hitching and frame rate issues everywhere outside of the cut-scenes first.

If you have constant crashing every 20 secs, it's your equipment, not the game.  I've crashed twice in 40hrs - both when using the character screen with a controller.

Makes a  lot of sense.  So we should be boycotting the review sites that give us these bogus reviews?

Even Angry Joe sold out.  I have unsubscribed his channel.

never thought a guy like that wouldn't say it like it is. Maybe he just didn't play origins on PC and doesn't realize how bad the controls are.

Well I don't know. Even though the ending still felt out of place they did spend time and money on the extended cut with ME3, trying to appease the players. Of course back then it was the console gamers as well who cried out in frustration. So I guess wait, see and hope for the best.

As I stated earlier what ticks me of most is the blatent misinformation or straight up lies they released before hand.

I will never again buy a Bioware game on release, much less pre-order it. Always wait and see, and if its not up to par buy a budget version if any.

You may want to rethink jumping to such conclusions. My processor, graphics card, and RAM are beyond the recommended requirements, and I had constant crashing long after trying all possible solutions. On average, crashes happened every 5-15 minutes, but I had a few that were within just a few seconds of a save loading, and even once while a save was loading.
