This doesn't make sense. Doing that would destroy the column of mass free space between a relay and its partner, and the relay would cease to function as a relay. Remember, a relay is essentially exactly the same tech as an FTL drive. The only difference is you have connected TWO to create the corridor of mass free space rather than a bubble around a spacecraft. A relay will not work without its partner, or in the case of secondary relays, multiple partners.
The relay would still have its partner. Think of it like a yo-yo.
Relay X is connected to Relay Y. Relay X uses its own connection to transmit itself over towards Relay Y. It would be like a yo-yo following the string back to the hand its connected to. Relays do not seem to need to be in any specific location to maintain a link, as long as it isn't too far out of reach distance-wise. The Mu relay, for example, was misplaced due to an explosion (or something) but was still able to keep its link to connected relays.
