Please only answer if you have actually unlocked a specialization for your Inquisitor

OK, so I have asked this on three different websites and haven't gotten an answer yet. I'm trying to unlock a specialization for my Inquisitor, and I can't find the book I need.

I know you go the war table to summon the trainers for your class, then talk to them, then collect the items to craft the specialization. I have all the items except for the book. I'm trying to unlock Templar - it says that it will be "among the possessions of your followers with that specialization."

I assume this means Cassandra. Where are her possessions? Do I have to earn it through conversation with her? I did her sidequest (finding the seekers) and have exhausted all conversations with her. I can't find the item anywhere in Skyhold - could it be somewhere else?

It says, failing that, it would be at the book merchant in Val Royeaux. It's not there either. I assume it only shows up there if the companion is not in your Inquisition - like if you choose not to recruit them. Not an option with Cassandra.

So, someone who has actually unlocked a specialization with your Inquisitor - how did you do it? Was it tied to your companion? Or am I missing something. I have heard all of the specializations require something similar to a writing, or a book. So even if you didn't unlock Templar specifically, it'd be helpful hearing how you did it with other specs so I can know what to look for/do with Cassandra.

I'm currently level 12 BTW, and did the quest to summon the trainers to Skyhold awhile ago.

Like I said, it's not there. I think that's only if the person is not in your Inquisition.

The book can be located in Cassandra's belongings, while at skyhold go to her then look to her right there will be a building inches from the stairs. At the top floor the third floor of this building is a book and that is what you need to read.

Yeah, it's on a table near Vivienne, assuming you recruited her.  If not, then it should be at the book merchant.

Apparently, in the winter palace, in the part of the garden you may unlock with halla statues, there is a noble. If you speak with him, and agree with him, you unlock the templar knowledge...so, i fixed the problem.

I don't think you are at the right spot in the game yet. You need to take a mission from the War Table before you can start unlocking specialisations. It sounds like Vivienne just joined your group in Skyhold. Typically she is at her room on an upper level of skyhold.

I have the same problem as well.  I got the quest and then went to Cole and read the assassin's book.  Now the quest says I still need to read the writings, but the book is not at the merchant or at Cole.  Has anyone resolved this problem before? or is this a bug?

I already at skyhold and went to train with them. And went to Val R. and couldn't find the merchant at all. I seen all of them but no books. Vivienne already joined me before went to skyhold. My mage is at level 16 already. All I need is the book and 1 wisp essence to complete it.

I'm having trouble even finding these damn trainers. I've looked all over skyhold and no one. I did the war map missions, I watched the intro video as they walked into the keep, and I can't find a single ONE of them.

Go to a requisition table and ensure you craft the quest item.  Hope that helps.  It solved my problem after I ran around trying to figure it out.

They are standing in the "infirmary" outside (near the front gate).

Well I'm gonna assume it's a bug then. Because the only people in the infirmary right now are lysette and the surgeon...

One of the few flaws in this game is unlocking the specializations, they really screwed it up.

They should just simply let them unlock at a specific level. I cannot find the book to unlock necromancy anywhere.....so I gave up. When you look forward to something in a game and eventually turn away from it in frustration that is not good for the game and indicates there is a problem with their design.

Seeing the number of threads about specializations it appears I am not alone.

I suppose the book of necromancy is next to Dorian since he's the one who's got this specialization.

To be honest, for me the hardest thing was to find the lazurite, the whisp essence, it was told where to find, and it wasn't so hard, the book was just on the desk near Vivienne, and the blade was easy to forge after.

Oh, yeah that's one thing that's kind of cool about DAI but also annoying in this case. Companions roam around instead of just standing in one place (I find Cassandra likes to practice with the combat dummies a lot).  Hmmm... trying to remember where Vivienne's "room" is... it's in the central tower area where Leliana and most of them hang out... I forget which floor though.  If it helps I am pretty sure she has fancy stained glass windows.

Vivienne is at the second floor. Take the door on the opposite where Varric stands and up the stairs after (if I remember well).

Finding that Lazurite damn near gave me a migraine. Then, I waltzed into the western approach, closed a fade rift, and the rift dropped seventeen lazurite.

Yeah, It is taking a while for information to start hitting websites. I guess many just did not have the game beforehand at all, and we need to wait till people who are so inclined start adding this data to wikis etc. I didn't take detailed pictures and so on when I was going through this to contribute to those sources.

Somehow I never ran into these issues in the other Bioware games although I purchased them at launch.

Now that could be because DA:I is so much larger, and there is so much more to do. Or it could be bad design choices, confusing mechanics, and a UI that doesn't quite do it's job of imparting information to the player.

For example, finding people would never be a problem in DA:O, since I could hold the TAB key and see small hovering white text above everything around me that was important for me to interact with. So in DA:O I suspect you could stand in the courtyard, and press TAB, and see the names of requisition officers.

In an MMO, you might see icons above their heads so you know you can talk to them, or they would appear on your map as little icons when they move.

DA:I has none of that necessary feedback for the player, so they either have to spend a lot of time searching ( and as this thread shows never finding) key parts of the game that they need to advance.

So this could be because of how much bigger and better DA:I is...or it could partially be due to bad design decisions for an RPG.

Cassandra keeps her possessions on the third floor of the smithing building.  Its east of her normal position, at the practice dummies.  NOT the building where the requisition table is; that'd be west of Cassandra.
