I've been playing many hours now (maybe around 8) and only now do I sort of understand how guards and barriers work.  It's not that I was struggling 8 hours of trying to understand, but I just didn't really consider it until I got to a point where the game became hard.  I'm playing on hard difficulty if that matters to anyone.  Guard is more obvious, but I think I'm either missing something with barrier or they're way too weak to be the intended replacement of healing magic.  They really are ineffective, even with my barrier caster being very level'd up in Spirit magic and barrier related skills.

Also, something should be different about skills that aid barriers or cause guard, just by the way they look.  There should also be a better description of skills in the tooltips for PC, but that's a different issue entirely.

So for the future, or perhaps for the present, maybe some better information should be included explaining just how vital it is to understand this stuff for the sake of the game.  I doubt people are reading the tutorials of their own volition prior to being frustrated by something they don't understand.  And I only sort of understand it now, I think, or else barriers are ridiculously weak.

Everything needs to be better explained. At this point, I'm not sure what most of my abilities do.

Most of the confusion I had regarding the dialogue selections in DA2 has been transferred to the combat in this game.

This game needs documentation.

I've written that sentence so many times now my phone auto-completes it.

It's explained pretty well in ability descriptions. Barrier is mostly useful only to block single large attacks from bosses, from what I've seen on Nightmare.

Anyway, here's a Guide I wrote on Guard: http://forum.bioware...generate-guard/

I saw "This game needs documentation" and thought "Oh hey, it's that guy who wants documentation".

You're famous now!

It's quite decent at preventing friendly fire damage as well. In general barrier soaks up a lot of damage over a short time, and it has area of effect, so it works on everyone. It's pretty much mandatory on Nightmare, at least to a degree.
