I actually think I will play all combat in Tactical Combat mode from now on. I think it is an excellent way to play. The mode does not seem to be designed for top down , overhead style of control since the camera really doesn't zoom out far enough for that. 

 

Rather you maneuver the "Camera" around the battlefield with WASD (I rebound my keys to A and D from Q and E which is the default) to setup your characters, and then execute orders. The camera is extremely flexible and you can get some incredibly insightful angles on the action. 

 

The selection crosshairs may get hung up on terrain, because it follows the same path that the AI will take through obstacles to prevent you from attempting to move somewhere you cannot. 

 

Melee characters auto-follow targets and all characters perform auto-attacks without you needing to hold any buttons or keys constantly.

 

Technically you can play the entire game like this, right clicking where you want your characters to go then unpausing. Tedious way to do things for general play, though, but possible.  You would get a full "Turn Based" feel ;-)
