How much or little are any of you accepting the title of Herald of Andraste?

I'm currently running a Human warrior who's sort of playing both sides.

He's willing to accept and claim that he's the Herald for the sake of the benefits it grants him in improving the status of the Inquisition, and he does believe the Maker exists, but he's also not willing to completely take advantage of peoples' faith (he told the nobles in Vivienne's recruitment mission that some tales of him were exaggerated, and that he was just seeking justice for Divine Justinia) and inwardly, he's not too thrilled about it (I imagine him sort of as the Andrastian equivalent of an agnostic (I'm probably getting the term wrong there, no disrespect meant); the Maker exists, but he's long since stopped caring altogether what his kids get up to and he certainly wouldn't jump so drastically into our affairs as a lot of people assume he's done with the Herald). The moment that really made me decide on this particular RP outlook was when Cassandra asked him if he believed in the Maker. "I believe he exists." Not "I believe he did this to me." or "I consider myself one of the faithful." "I believe he exists." It's a statement that can be taken so many ways on so many levels, and I was already trying to bill a man who put on a faithful, accepting face for the benefit of a greater cause but didn't know what to believe when no-one else was looking.

I'm not that far yet (20 hours and still in the hinterlands, my god this game is big) but my elf can't get enough of telling people she isn't the herald of Andraste, and that it shouldn't matter anyways because there's this enormous demon-filled hole in the sky. If pressed, she'll say that she believes in the elven gods, and that this whole thing makes her uncomfortable.

My elf thinks the humans are all batshit insane for the idea and discredits it when necessary, though she does tone it down to 'I don't know' if she feels the situation needs more delicacy.

My Inquisitor's a human. Having her believe it for the moment.

People need hope, even if it's false hope. And nothing's more convincing than a true belief.

My Human Archer is pretty much being dragged into this kicking and screaming (mostly by Cassandra :P).  In his heart of hearts, he knows it's the right thing to do and he's all about doing what's right, but Maker the pressure

I've had him shooting nugs outside of Haven to destress.

When I get the game, I'm making my Human Warrior an Aethiest and rejecting the title of Herald at every opportunity.

My qunari is still agnostic, but he's playing the Herald Card pragmatically.

Lets see...demons invading the world? There most certainly is a hell.

Shiny woman saved him and gave him the power to close the rift? Perhaps there is a Maker.

But most importantly, people are looking to him as a guide in this chaotic time. Adaar will play the saving hero the common folk see him as, but it won't be for free and it's mostly for self-investment for the future.

My character thinks anyone who calls her that is weird and probably slightly crazy. She's human but still... very creepy.

My qunari outright calls bs on it. My elf says she believes her own gods. My human picks the "I don't know" replies

My first Inquisitor was an atheist who lol'ed at the thought that some human god had "chosen" her. If anything she suspected that same god was behind the Veil tear. Nevertheless she allowed people to worship her because she knew they needed something to believe in--if they took comfort in a jerkass Maker, his "bride", and a false herald, so be it.

My next planned Inquisitor will be a human who embraces it with an almost fanatical desperation. Being the spare to the spare, he's never been anyone important in his life--this is his chance! He's someone now! Not just someone, the chosen one! He matters! He will cling to that belief and rub it in anyone's face because he's never mattered before, and he's jubilant that is he now.

Spoiler

I'm very much looking forward to that playthrough.

My favorite moment was with Speaker Anais

Anais: So are you this herald sent by the maker we've heard about come to save us all?

Me: No

Anais: HA! I knew it was all a farce, no one can save us from the rifts

Me: Ugh... I can save you from the rifts...

Basically I've taken to not correcting people when they call me herald cuase it never stops them doing so, but if asked directly I answer honestly.

My Inquiz (elf) challenges it and refuses it at every turn, saying she believes in her own gods.

My character never fully accepted being the Herald because he never felt worthy of it.

My elf inquisitor is an Andrastian (there's enough lore to support that). But he doesn't want to claim to be the "Herald" without knowing thats actually true. And the events other posters allude to above give him that much more cause to hold his tongue.

Having faith actually makes him that much more more reluctant to make a claim like that without knowing. Blasphemy is a serious sin in pretty much any religion.

I'm playing a Dalish mage who personally doesn't believe she is the Herald of Andraste at all, but she is very tactful and diplomatic when speaking to people she knows are devout Andrastians, taking the "I don't know / not sure" approach to these people, instead of flat out telling them that she doesn't believe Andraste is the Maker's bride, or even in the Maker himself.

My first Inquisitor persistently denies she's anyone's or anything's Herald. She thinks people are fools to count on divine intervention and takes every opportunity to say so to her inner circle, while being less confrontational about it to the public. She also doesn't believe in the Maker, but only says that if asked since there's no need to be intrusive about it.

My favorite line so far is from "In Your Heart Shall Burn": "All this happened because of [...] arguments about the next world. It's time we start believing in this one."

I'll try to play an Inquisitor with an attitude "I dont know, but I'll use the power it gives me" next.

My human mage Inquisitor doesn't believe in this whole deal, and get's really pissed off when people bring the topic up. He will be damned if he makes the same mistakes as Andraste. Oh, and he was ever so smug when the truth came during the fade segment.

I'm making my human mage a true agnostic. He acknowledges he has no idea whether there's a Maker, and he doesn't believe strongly either way. He's just taking it as it comes. I figure he's a lapsed Andrastian.

In that he doesn't follow the Qun, and he did just walk out of a giant explosion with a weird glowing thing on his hand, and the Herald of Andraste is a made-up title anyway, my Qunari Inquisitor's position is basically, "Sure, I guess I could be the Herald of Andraste."

It's insulting, given the Andrastian history with the Dalish. Why would my Inquisitor want anything to do with representing a religion that has done nothing but hate and slaughter the groups that she holds dear?

You can make the argument that you do not represent the Chantry itself but considering that Andraste is the equivalent of their Jesus Christ....That's gonna be hard to shake.

I do not understand why Bioware so desperately wants me to embrace the Andrastians despite their history riddled with genocide both figurative and literal. Sticking a few exceptions to the rule in my face does not change a damned thing.

And I am still looking for a chance to tell them about themselves.

My mage ended up being a lot less stringent about her non-belief than I was planning because Cassandra and Mother Giselle turned out to be so darned reasonable.
