I like Mother Giselle but her fake accent is so strong that I think she's probably spitting in my PCs face when she talks.

There are worse accents in the game though, and some voice actors that I really wish they had redone even if it's just for a bit part. Her accent is a little bad, but at the same time her voice - I found - had a very soothing quality. I'm sorry it bothered you.

I like the Mother's character and I'd make her Divine if I could (I'm still in Haven so haven't gotten very far into the story so I'm hoping she stays a "good guy") and I'm clicking on all her dialogue options since she has such inspiring and wise words. I have heard some other characters that have worse accents...I just think hers is funny since it makes me want to duck the spit that might fly.

I cant even spot the difference between american and english unless I really pay attention, that or if the word "Cant" is used.

Ever seen the movie Clue?  Colleen Camp plays a french maid named Yvette with a ridiculous French accent.  It was two levels less ridiculous than Erlina's.

As a native French speaker, it's actually kind of hilarious how downplayed the accents are compared to real life.  

 

Trust me, some French accents are borderline unintelligible with how thick they are. The thing that gets me is that Orlesians HAVE French accents even though they clearly all speak English. What the hell - if you're going to give them an accent, at least give us some scenes with them actually speaking their native tongue.

I'm french as well and I can tell you that I don't know anybody with that kind of accent. I've heard bad accent from a lot of french people, but Mother Giselle Rs are so emphasised that it hurts, and I clearly don't know of any language that do the same - certainly not french, though our Rs are quite hard. And she pronounces the Hs as she had a very bad russian - or mexican if you like Jeff Dunham's Jalepeno - accent, making a hard R sound, french people never actually do that. Like.... never. They actually tend not to pronounce them at all, as we do when we speak french. I quite like the character of Mother Giselle, and her voice is actually quite soothing. But my god, that accent... It's just horrible.

 

I actually skip the dialog every time she says a line : I'm afraid my ears will bleed when I hear her talk.

Funny because I thought Mother Giselle kinda sounded like Marjolaine actually. Do we know who voiced her?

Marjolaine's accent is bad, but the acting is also pretty weird. At least its consistent. . Mother Giselle is even more horrible because the VA does not act too bad... It's the accent alone that ruins it

 

 Kath Soucie did Marjolaine, but as for Mother Giselle, I would love to know as well.

But his belief was shaken after what happened at Haven and he told mother Giselle who swiftly restored his faith when she told him that belief always has to be tested. One of the most memorable moments in the game for me.

I agree that the acting was top-notch. And it's why I actually like the character. Still it may be that my ear are bit too sensitive, but I can't listen to that accent. Anyway the VA is (apart from that) quite good in my opinion.

Interestingly enough, that accent is very typical of Europe as well - other French native-speakers of different nationalities don't struggle with it as much. For example French Canadians generally have a much more distinct emphasis on words with H in them, while their R sound fine.

 

All in all, the accent didn't detract from the character, nor entered realms of caricature - at least for me. Like I said I find it more damaging that Bioware didn't bother to include scenes where Orlesians would speak to each other in French, and address the Inquisitor in English. I hope they eventually do the same for all the nations, Spanish/Portuguese for Antiva and Rivain, German for the Anderfells and perhaps Latin for Tevinter.

I actually live there, and am french, and I can tell there's a huge difference between a normal R that comes from the throat, as in french, german (which I've learnt as well) or spanish, and the Rs as pronounced by that actress. Maybe the closest to those monstruous Rs are in flemish, and even then (I'm not saying that flemish is monstruous, just the Rs from that VA ^^).

 

But anyway, I'm probably talking too much about a problem that is one only to me. I just had to agree with the OP. But anyway I still enjoy this character, and this game as well !

I don't know. Would't it be a bit immersion breaking if they spoke French in "not-France" Orlais and Spanish in "not-Spain" Antiva? That's likely why they don't do that. I'm guessing they use the accents to give the impression that the characters are from a different nation with its own language and flavor, but since Orlesian isn't really French, they don't go all the way into the language itself.
