How essential is the tactical camera and how useful is companion AI?

I just got the game and barring any of the horrid bugs that seem to be plaguing everyone, should be able to start today. I just wanted to ask, given the general opinions about the utility of the tactical camera, how essential is it?

Can I play without it in Normal or will I need it for tough mobs and boss battles? I never used tactical in Origins, though I only played in Casual there.

Is it true that the AI is abysmal and any orders I give to individual companions are immediately rescinded when I switch to another? I was looking forward to more tactically involved play than I am usually comfortable with, using a trap-laying Inquisitor and archers and mages on ranged. But I've been hearing (reading) that companions don't stay put when you tell them to and follow you around all the time, orders notwithstanding. Is this true?

A combat noob wants to know.

I'm impressed with Warrior AI.

Cassandra can take care of herself on Hard, so I'm sure she can do it on Normal.

I haven't tried Stealth + traps personally, but I've seen videos where people do it while their companions hang back. So that should work too.

One thing you might run into, however, is ranged characters shooting from melee range. Dammit Varric.

Umbar,

If you are playing on Casual or Normal, you should have no problems with the over-the-shoulder mode. I have been using that mode on Nightmare, and have only had problems which necessitated the Tactical cam once or twice in the ~25 hours I am into the game.

If you auto-level the companions when you acquire them, and let them use their preset "tactics", you will probably never even have to open that screen and can enjoy the game without a hiccup.

However, they companions will leash to the controlled party member, even if instructed to hold, when the PC moves a certain distance away. There is almost zero ability to customize their tactics in any meaningful way. And if you are playing on the PC, the "tactical" cam is nearly useless (though I hear it is much better for the console versions).

DAI is not the game to try and break out from your comfort zone regarding tactical gameplay and strategy. It is a beautiful setting with well written characters and a compelling story. Enjoy that and don't expect it to offer anything in the way of strategic micromanagement.

The tactical mode is really just best for scoping out battle, doing some initial positioning, otherwise its kinda crappy, it'd be one thing if it had some options, for example, telling Cassandra to hold ground here would be awesome, as is, I set a trap, then engage the enemies, and she goes running past the traps. I think it might be useful if you're the warrior, then you can set your traps, array you're ranged chars behind you, and get them to draw in the enemies, but if you're playing an archer or mage, its really only useful to scout the enemies.

Thanks for the input. I've steeled myself and gone in with Normal, but if I find the combat too difficult or tedious, I'll scale back to Casual.

I find companion AI to be almost entirely worthless myself. Having played about 20 hours on Nightmare, last night I turned off all AI completely...10,000% improvement over hoping that your companions will do anything even remotely intelligent. You may have a different experience on another difficulty.

I also agree with some of the comments about Tac Cam not being required a lot of the time.  I've played the first 6 hours with three different classes, just to get a sense of which one I want to use for the full Nightmare playthrough (so obviously, I've been playing on Nightmare).  Using the 2H Warrior, Mage, and Archer Rogue, I probably only had to use the cam about 20% of the time, and mostly on Rift closures, when those damn Terrors come out.  As long as you save before each skirmish, you'll only need it when things go sour.  The biggest thing I use it for, honestly, is laying down barriers and taking potions.  You can also use it to re-position your party, which also has the effect of drawing aggro away from anyone you want (enemies that are chasing someone aren't doing damage).

I am not using the tactical camera a lot. I used it for a bit before I realised I could pause without entering tac cam. Now I just pause and enter commands from 3d person. I imagine as the game gets harder and positioning becomes important I will use it then.

The AI is OK but isn't very good at handling friendly fire. I am playing Hard with FF, and I have had to switch off AoE abilities so that my companions don't kill each other. There should really be a setting in the behaviours that says don't use AoE if there is a friendly in the way.
