I'm only level 8, but definitely try out upgraded chain.
It works out functioning somewhat like the me3 shadow.

Yeah, I was actually trying to decide between the Hook and Tackle or Evade (with the upgrades of course). The only thing that worries me about Hook and Tackle is that it requires an enemy and I have to aim it. Not necessarily a good thing when I'm trying to get out of a Demon Commanders scream AoE.

I really like the passive that let's you enter stealth after every kill

My opinion is that the chain is the aggressive choice, which seems more in tune with the
assassin skill set. I had the alchemist before assassin, the bombs and frost/taunt flask
on the alchy make it a bit more suitable to a defensive style. Anyhow, I set her (alchy)
up that way, and wanted a change of pace for the assassin.
Chain is great offensively. As long as you have a good connection, and the host is
not lagging, targeting is spot on. It can be used defensively in certain situations,
but a well timed vanish is more appropriate on the assasin.
For the demon commander, it's probably best to only get on it after you have seen
it burn an aoe fear on a character class that is better at dealing with that
(legionairre, for one).

Im using stealth, hidden blades and twin fang. Its really insane damage.
The only problem is i cant work out if I should go poison weapon + exploding poison (the 25% damage buff while its active would be insanely good for bosses and strong mobs with hidden blades and twin fang and would add some aoe damage to the build) or go flanking strike for more survivability with much more stealth (id be picking up normal rank flanking strike anyway for the passive beyond it (all stealth hits are crits).
Basically comes down to poison +1 extra passive out of bloodied pray(2% extra damage for each 10% of health target is missing), throatcutter(+10% damage if enemy has lower health than you, im not really sure how good that is especially on higher difficulties, does it mean percentage or just flat lower health? the latter would be meh) and cripple(slow when hitting from behind).
Or flanking strike and +2 talents out of bloodied pray, throatcutter and cripple.
Or i could get poison and go down the tree and get stealth reset after kill.
Any recommendations cause all of them seem pretty good tbh =p

How do you make it to the enemies before the mage & archer kill them?
Stealth and sit behind the archers until my party engages and knock destroy them or hope they are decent (either a good tank or a good shielding ele or keeper).
EDIT: oh I see you meant them beating you to kills, basically that only happens on routine and is elss of an issue on threatening and even less of an issue on perilous.
Also stealth speeds up your movement so you just gotta be ahead of the party.

I have had success with:
Stealth + Lost in the Shadows
Shadow Strike
Poisoned Weapons + Infected Wounds
Flank Attack + Skirmisher
Knife in the Shadows
Explosive Toxin
I was never here
+ anything that adds damage, sunders or increases your chance to land a critical hit.
This allows you got do massive burst damage coming out of stealth for a fast kill and immediately go back into stealth again keeping enemies off you while you pick them off one by one and gives a bit of AoE for clustered enemies (have a low level purple tier dagger that causes enemies to explode on top of a superb fire rune so can't vouch for the builds effectiveness with lower tier items).

Here is my current build. Besides a few things, I've been pretty satisfied with it. It's my go to build for Perilous when I'm lucky enough to find a random group to play with.
(Btw I have a unique lvl 20 dagger, and a unique lvl 13 dagger so with hidden blades/overkill, I can do over 9000 damage from stealth. so somethings may vary depending on the weapons you have.)
Abilities unlocked
Twin Fangs
Hidden blades/overkill
Shadow Strike/Quick Blade
Stealth
Flank Attack/Skirmisher
Fallback plan
Passives
Ambush
Easy to Miss
Dance of Death
Knife in the Shadows
I was never here
First Blood
Mercy Killing
Cull the Herd
Deadly
Cheap Shot
Unforgiving Chain
Sneak Attack
Basically I'm an assassin that strikes from the shadows. I go stealth as soon as I see an enemy, and work my way behind them as the rest of my party gets their attention. I prioritize stronger targets like the pride demon since I can one-shot them with hidden blades and go back into stealth. After them I go after the archers with Shadow Strike (though usually it won't one-shot them so you'll need to quickly kill them to go stealth again.) Flank Attack/Skirmisher is for those moments when you start drawing agro and need to get away. There are also moments when you kill an enemy but won't get your stealth ability back, so it's nice to have a backup. It's also a useful way to get away from terror demons/the demon commander when they use their aoe attack. If you are close enough to the edge, it works great to get away. During 5/5, I usually work my way around the map and pick off every other enemy so my teammates and focus on the commander easier.
Pros
- My assassin supports his team by picking the enemies apart from behind. With my 388 dps and 213 dps daggers, I can quickly kill my targets and escape back into the shadows.
- Can quickly kill single targets besides commanders.
- Stealth gives you great survivability.
Cons
- As I mentioned before, sometimes when you kill an enemy, your "I was never here" passive won't work which can sometimes screw you over.
- When you use stealth, sometimes the enemy can kill you before you're completely invisible. Though sometimes they will still see you anyways.
- Terrible CC. You'll need to rely on teammates for that.
- On Perilous I can barely take a hit.
I've been questioning about giving up one of the passives for the Stealth/Lost in the Shadows. Some of the times I've been killed, were because I had to pause to go stealth. That one second delay usually gets me killed by archers.
Sometimes I'll miss with shadow strike since they start running towards my team. I've been questioning about using Twin Fangs and upgrading it. But I also like that Shadow Strike can knock an enemy over when I need to. Another thing is when you use Flank attack, sometimes you'll still be caught by the enemy attack which sucks at times. This usually happens more when you're the last alive/soloing.

Twin fangs upgraded
Hidden blades upgraded
stealth (not upgraded) though you can take it if you wish as you have some points to play around with
Flank attack upgraded
First tree down to sneak attack
second down to knife in the shadows
Apart that you have quite a few amazing passives to choose from, cull the herd is one I would never miss but apart from that they are all pretty good and its up to you.
Priority when playing is on archers or on mages/ pride demons/ fear demons/ assassins. You can use hidden blades from range and if you have good enough daggers it can pretty much kill even pride demons in one shot on threatening difficulty. I tend to also use it whenever its up against demon commander also simply because you want him to die asap.
