This is not the forum for you mate, they will go off about straight male privilege and what not. Just know that a lot of people agree with you, just on this forum it wouldn't seem so.

I will say Cassandra is not what you think, it is a good romance and she is not just some manly tough girl i think you will like it.

I'm going for the easy way out: Playing a female character who will be open to romance if she connects to a character. It's a new approach for me. :D I think that gives me a lot of options to choose from.

If you're simply playing yourself that's your choice. Apparently you're then stuck with playing a straight guy.

Or you could not romance anyone. I've heard the majority do that and live.

I'll never understand people complaining that they have Cassandra for an LI. She's brilliant. I'm only about 25 hours in, but she's quickly becoming my favorite Dragon Age character. In fact, I like her so much that despite being a gay man intending to play a gay male character, I couldn't help myself and got into a Cassandra/Dorian love triangle.

Maybe she's not pretty. Who cares? She's awesome.

I've just discovered this today after playing the game for a couple of hours.

As a male character you only have a single female romance option from your followers. There are in fact two female romance options in total, but the second one is not a character you roam around the countryside with.

On top of that the single option you have is a burly tough girl tanky sword and shield type.

Seriously?

This has probably been covered a lot already I'm sure. But I have to say I'm pretty annoyed.

Thanks Bioware for a great game, but it should have more then a single romance partner for heterosexual males.

This game has 8 glorious romances for you to enjoy.

If you choose to limit yourself to one gender/orientation then you have limited yourself to at least two choices.

If you then wish to quibble further then those are limits you impose, not the game.

Straight male PCs have two romance options (just as most other people).

Constraints you decide to add do not change that.

To be honest from what I've seen Cassandra and Josephine are in my opinion the best LIs in the game.

I'm a straight woman and I adore Cassandra.

All you complainers don't deserve her.

I would kill for Cass to be available to my lady dwarf.  They'd be perfect together.

Right?! My heart belongs to Solas at the moment, but if she was available to my elf I would probably do a parallel playthrough. I like her way more than I thought I would.

I'm female and find Cassandra both pretty and awesome at the same time.  I also like Dorian so I'm going to have to make at least one male character for future playthroughs, even though I rarely do that.

Meh. She's still the same unpleasant, stiff scowl-machine, I knew she was going to be. I'm only 15 hours into the game, but what I've seen fails to change my opinion of her. I adore the banter where Varric accuses her of starting the Inquisition by kidnapping Josephine and threatening everyone at sword-point.

I frankly do not see what people see in Cassandra. She is brash, unpleasant, has more sword than sense, she likes to just do as opposed to think, she is big on faith nonsensical bullshite and she has poor taste in literature.

Seriously, smutty trashy literature ? Come on Cass, have some class, get better smutty literature. I recall in one conversation where Dorian happens to pass by Cass and said "I actually felt dumber for having tried."

The best love interests in this game are Josephine Montilyet, Solas and Dorian.

The guy I met at GS when getting my game complained about the same thing.

I think it's silly. Cas and Josie are wonderful women, and if I were a straight guy who insisted on playing straight guy characters

I'd be prerfectly happy.

Now, barring that, why not play a different gender or romance a same-gender. I don't understand why so many people have an issue with this.

It's call RPing for a reason.

Edit: wow, some of you are surprising me. Cas is not a scowling machine, she will laugh at jokes and smile at you.

Maybe you're just not being pleasant to her. I'm definitely going to romance her eventually.

Unexpectedly, she became one of my favourite followers.

I think the beauty of huge RPG's like this one is that it allows you so many ways to customize the game to your liking.  I can totally understand not wanting to play the other gender or romance the same gender if that doesn't make the game more enjoyable for the player.  I don't find doing o/s romances to be enjoyable, so I self-limit by not doing them.  I'm still role-playing though.  I'm not a qunari.  I'm not a two-handed warrior.  I don't live in Thedas.  Etc.

That being said, I'd also be perfectly happy with Cass as an option if I were to role-play a straight male character.

Actually, no. I saw some playthroughs where they were playing an Inquisitor who preferred indirect methods to a problem and who professed themselves as atheists, as in they do not believe in the Maker at all. Cassandra does not take those two things really well. She also disapproves taking the mages as allies.

Cassandra disapproves of many things. She mainly disapproves those who prefer not to be direct / straight on and those who profess to not believe in the Maker or any god at all.

Josephine and all her friends are fans of Varric's novels. She mention it when you ask her about Varric early on. Cassandra at least admit the book is terrible (and magnificient at the same time).

I thought Samara in ME2 was the hottest as well, so obviously my tastes are a bit different from the regular classical. Was pretty disappointed to find out she wasn't a romance option.

welcome to the club then, I also thought Samara was hot, what can i say, i'm a boobs man with a slight sprinkle of foot fetishism

Somebody applied rule 34 on myself then. Good think they make her have bad taste in literature or romancing her would be very narcisist from my part...

True but I did just list other reasons why I am not fond of her. I like the thinking, talking and not-very-religious types of women. Cassandra is none of those things, unfortunately.

Eh. If the two we had weren't a d/s archtype and not-a-companion, I wouldn't say word one. Cass has nothing on Morrigan in terms of how much dislike I have for them, but I didn't complain at all, because Leliana.

Not defending all the Straighty McBro Cassandra-haters out there, but just wanna point out that it's okay to not enjoy or even admit to feeling uncomfortable playing a certain gender or romance. I'm not happy with my PC's options, but it's not enough to make me change gender or orientation.

That said I have yet to make a thread about how angry I am about this or that character because, I don't know, I'm a grown up? *snorts*

Whaaaat, I don't get that sense at all. Cass appreciates Inquisitors that are straight with her, but she isn't humourless. She actually appreciates an Inquisitor who teases her a bit when she's down. Cass is very conscious of how easily power can be abused, and she is trying to come up with the best possible solutions in a world that's suddenly turned upside-down. At the same time, she's having a very personal crisis of faith, and is searching for a way to reconcile her beliefs with what is happening. Her banters with Solas show just how hard she's trying to come up with a moral solution for the templar/mage problems. She's got a bit of a temper, and she hates feeling helpless, so she can sometimes come off as unpleasant when she's feeling frustrated, but she always apologizes, and she always strives to improve herself. I think she's very admirable. She's got a lot of integrity.

Plus, my Inquisitor is very pro-mage, and Cass disapproves of that, but I never get the sense that she holds that against my Inquisitor. She's a consummate professional, and if you make a decision then she'll stick by you.

I get all that. I never said Cassandra was an unrealistic character, just that she is not appealing as a love interest. The Tsundere that you have to "chase" and get past their prickly side to see "the real person inside" just isn't a universal appeal.

Some people do like that, and I'm glad for them. I only chime in when people are all like "Y U NO LIKE CASS?! CASS iS PERFECT".

Meh.

Hmmm...

I can't decide if I should take a shot for this, I mean he's only saying one female character is unattractive his other complaint isn't related to attractiveness.

What do you people think?

I think the key problem is that while Cassandra is a terrific character with an interesting background and tremendous room for growth, as the only in-party romance for the "Straight Male" character she does not fit the criteria that those of that demographic tend to desire.

She's too feisty. She has a tough shell. And she is not feminine enough to fulfill their fantasies.

"Romance" in the sense that we get it in a game like this is *generally* a more feminine form of story telling. Women enjoy and value working through a character's issues, getting to what's under the surface. There's a whole book genre dedicated to this, and within that there are subgenres for stuff like sci-fi, fantasy, and paranormal. (I write within the latter two of these for a living.)

I chatted with my brother and my boyfriend about this to get a more balanced set of opinion. Neither of them are mindless idiots or in any other way prone to being offensive. What they both told me, having looked at Josephine and Cass, is that (for them) Josephine would be "out" because she would be a chore since she's not an in-party character. Cass, on the other hand, is too masculine and over-bearing. It's difficult for them to feel like bad-ass male heroes with her beside them because with her personality it's totally possible for her to overshadow them. Further, a character like Cass (a) does not visually appeal to either of them (both like women with longer hair) and when this is combined with the amount of "effort" required to romance a character their reaction was, quite simply, "Why bother?".

Whether it was right or wrong not to include a more traditionally feminine romance option in a party-based role is another debate all together and is one which I, frankly, have no desire to delve into.

I am always sorry to hear people aren't happy with the romance options when they care about that aspect of the game. (I wanted Varric, darn it. So I can, in my own way, relate.) But at the same time, I'm going to pardon that exclusion and focus on the fact that I'm going to need to play this game EIGHT TIMES to see how each romance plays out, because I find every option interesting.
