There is absolutely ZERO difference. If you say 'He's a dumb pea-for-brains rambo' it's directly equivalent to 'I personally dislike him a bit because some might consider him slightly intellectually challenged, but I TOTALLY admire him for his impressive muscular build.' They are both perfectly acceptable value statements.

Your argument about insults only holds water if we are talking about real people with emotions. We are not -- these are NPCs. I doubt they could care less about what we think of them and if we formulate our criticism in a whitewashed, PC-compliant, NLP-enabled way.

Yet again, some people seem to take criticism directed at the artistic design of NPCs as direct criticism of themselves. Which they/you really shouldn't.

And thus you get mocked and your request goes unheeded.

Good job. Certainly getting what you wanted no?

I find it depressing that I am a woman with a square-ish jaw, a la Cassandra, and apparently I am too ugly to live.

One statement is childish, the other actually lends itself to discussion. People would roll their eyes at the former because of how juvenile it is, it has no baring on the actual opinion stated.

The opinion voiced is the same. You can't simply deny its right to be voiced or its basic value as an opnion because of the arbitrary criterion 'needs to be formulated nicely'. Plus, why do you even care so much? It's not like a real person is being insulted and you are justly defending her/him; you are white-knighting a purely virtual product of fantasy. 'Childish' or not would be the least of my concerns in this case...

I think taking such stuff with a bit of a smile and a clear understanding that nothing in such threads is ad-hominem (or at least should be, back to the question of infantility) helps a lot.

... and this is an example how you don't do it.

Look, I'm sorry if you identify yourself with Cassandra so much that you take criticism levelled at her as a direct insult of your looks, but it really isn't. At all.

Because people like having discussions with people able to discuss things. A childish opening statement doesn't lend itself to that idea. I personally would not want to talk / listen to someone who acts that way because generally it leads to headaches ;).

Fair enough. But I do think that a bit of an open mind and tolerance help there as well; otherwise you might simply not listen to interesting people and discard opinions because of a botched first impression, which is frequently misleading.

Over ten years on gaming forums has formed my prejudices ^^. Sometimes its easier just to roll your eyes and avoid it all together than hope for a good outcome :).
