i wasn't talking about the quality. Making a character look pretty or ugly doesn't say anything about the quality of writing or design.

I remember a post from a dev on this forum, that they wanted to give their characters flaws, so they don't look "supermodel like". I find it just strange that they did exactly this with all female characters (Cassandra being the most extreme example. Since Dawn of the Seeker ->>> she got short hair, a masculine look, wide jaw and a big scar) while  I don't see Dorian or Cullen having any flaws. They both look like supermodels. Cullen became prettier and prettier since Origins, while the opposite happened with Cassandra. And yes, I know that beauty is subjective, but considering the dozens of threads complaining about the look of the female characters that's at least an indication that many people are not happy with the look of their potential romance option.

 

In my post that you quoted, I clearly state that I am referring to the appearance of the characters, the same as you were. I don't believe whether someone is gay or straight at BioWare has any impact on characters' appearances.

 

The fact that there are more "straight males" complaining about things in the forums is nothing more than demographics. "A dozen complaint threads" is indicative of nothing. There have been more than a dozen threads accusing BioWare of being anti-gay. It's not true. There have been more than a dozen threads complaining that BioWare is "Anti-Straight Male." It is also untrue.

 

And anyone playing BioWare games for "romance options" is dealing with issues that have nothing to do with objectively assessing the quality of a video game's design.

 

Bioware doesn't make "romance options" so no one playing BioWare games for them is going to be satisfied. Period.

 

BioWare makes video games featuring fictional characters, and tells stories that involve romance. Whether someone finds those characters sexually appealing is completely irrelevant, and has nothing to do with the gender or sexuality of BioWare employees.

Honestly, most of the women are actually kind of cute! However, being a straight female I want to romance the males. I'm not very happy with the choices they gave for romanceable options, but is that going to stop me from playing? No sir-ee. 

 

I am pretty upset that you can't really make your character a bit 'prettier' in game- but that's mostly a complaint on the hair and body size issue (why can't you have a petite/tall build for the body?)

To me, they look like real people, flaws and all. And frankly, it's about time. I'm all for beauty, but sometimes everyone looking like they should be in a Calvin Klein Advertisement gets old real fast. It's unrealistic.

I don't care for Dorian's mustache, but that won't stop me from seeing past it and romancing him anyway. Hell, I kinda even like it now, lol.

But seriously, I disagree. There are many pretty npcs and followers in the game: Sera, all the elven women actually, vivienne, the former Dalish-mage that does research, even Fiona.

Yeah, I was annoyed when Vivienne wasn't romancable, she seems really interesting.

The OP is right. The women are Oblivion fugly. Beauty is not in the eye of the beholder. If that were true, Kate Upton wouldn't be universally popular.

So very wrong.  For instance, the women that I find most beautiful in real life are Asian women.  Something that not everyone agrees with.  Some people prefer black women, others Mexican.  Some people like red heads, or blondes.  Some people like big women.  In fact, I knew of a guy who swore he would divorce his wife if she ever lost weight.  So yeah, it very much is in the eye of the beholder.

I agree 100% that the general attractiveness of all characters in this game is terrible.

 

I think the designers, concept artists, and character artists at Bioware now just aren't up to the same skill level as old Bioware.

 

Baldur's Gate 2 had Viconia DeVir and Aerie.

Dragon Age 1 had Morrigan and Leliana.

 

Dragon Age 2 had Isabella.

 

And hottest of all, Mass Effect had Miranda Lawson.

There are many factors in choosing a mate. You can actually fall in love with someone that you think is ugly, or less than perfect-looking. (Most people marry someone they think has physical flaws.)

 

This is theological, but if you believe in God (and God is love) he would never make something ugly. God loved Adam and made Eve. They were eternally beautiful. Ugliness is a consequence of original sin. Therefore, beauty is not subjective. It is absolute as God's love.
