Which difficulty level should I choose?

I remember that the topmost difficulty in DAO was too much for me, as I hated to reload several times after every combat.

What I want:

- a fight that would imply tactics and planning, but which would occasinally forgive me an error or two.
- I don't mind reloading, but I don't want to reload after each random encounter.
- I don't mind against heavy boss fights, but I don't want to replay the chapter because I failed to train/equip my char ideally to defeat the boss.

In other words, I'm no power player, I prefer immersion, but I also want tactical challenge, without switching the difficulty levels in mid-game.

Any advice on the difficulty levels?

Nightmare is really the only difficulty that presents any challenge you can brute force your way through hard without any real tactics

Casual if you play with K&M.

Hard or even Nightmare with controller.

I am playing through on Nightmare with KB+M (since I apparently hate myself), and there is almost no real challenge in any of the encounters so far. The only time I have had to switch to "tactical" cam to even attempt a choke point was during a mission which went all DA2 horde-mode-lite on me, and just send several waves of baddies at me, culminating in a boss battle. Thats not real challenge, its just zerging. So I had my party hold behind a near-ish obstacle so the horde had to hit the tank, then just went back to over-the-shoulder with my Inquisitor and let the AI do its own thing, only occasionally pausing to drag Solas back out of melee range. I've had to reload a few times, but any encounter which I legitimately count not beat was always due to level discrepancy, and so I would retreat and come back later at a more appropriate level.

...seriously he just sneaks back into melee when I'm not looking.

So, for someone like me who thinks that DAO's nightmare mode with the right build is kind of easy, but DA2's almost too much (Rock Wraith, you fucker), definitely Nightmare rather than Hard?

is nightmare doable with k&m for player who suceed to complete DA:O nightmare with only one companion instead of 3 (self-limitation to use only 1 bud at time)?

i really afraid those k&m issues during tac cam, because i liked how DA:O tac cam was working.

Should i really buy controller?

Those who are saying that Nightmare is 'easy' are waving their e-peens.

With skill, good positioning and competent play, it may be do-able and enjoyable, but I'm not that good.

I will be playing on Hard.

That gives me a challenge, gives tac cam some purpose (my default combat metric)

and doesn't bring the game to a stop.

This is such a personal choice which should be governed simply by enjoyment

as it has no other impact.

Nightmare is quite doable with little to no use of tactical mode, pausing or controlling party members.

Playing a tank with suitably customised controls does wonders. Tactical camera is not as useful as it was in DAO, primarily due to poor UI design. However, if you play it like an action RPG, things work out fairly well.

Hard is a great balance for me right now.  I'm playing on PC with KB+M and have used a 2H warrior and DW rogue so far.

The trash enemies you randomly encounter are no challenge at all, the sub-boss types are challenging enough to make me pause and use some kind of tactics, and in the boss fights I usually run out of potions and everyone is almost dead by the end.

Between my two characters, I've only reached level 8 though.  We'll see if this keeps up.

Sonofajockey, seriously i wasn't waving my d... around.  Dao/Nightmare NOW seems easy with sensible leveling (AW or damage dealing finesse tank for rogue or finesse /strength build for a DW warrior) and right items for each class. Once you grab the more powerful items, you don't die, seriously, even without a healer.

DA2 is a lot harder and unforgiving, especially in Act I. Kind of boring to be honest.

So DAI will be nightmare for me, that's all. It's too massive a game for me to contemplate several walkthroughs. To each his own. Happy gaming.

Sonofajockey,

Providing an honest assessment of my personal take on the difficulty scaling is not dick-waving. I thought I did a pretty good job of qualifying why I felt id wasn't offering any legitimate challenge. And the OP was clearly making a comparison to their previous level of challenge in DAO, which DAI does not hold a candle to. My standard party is either Dorian/Solas for barrier spam and the odd CC, Varric/Sera for consistent ranged DPS, Blackwall/Iron Bull for a tank, and my Inq for aggressive spell-spamming death. Most of the tactics seem to take place at the leveling screen, rather than on the battle field. I rarely micro-manage my team, particularly my tank since trying to melee with a KB+M is just impossible, and only move them around when they're in stupid places.

However, with the lack of control over attribute allocation, there is not going to be the ability to min/max as aggressively, so I doubt Nightmare Solo runs will ever take place in DAI. Sonofajockey

Ha. I clearly phrased that too strongly  :D

I guess I'm making the observation that Nightmare is straight-forward to you because you know what you are doing.

I play Hard because (more or less) I know what I'm doing.

For your average player Normal and Easy settings will be required for people to not repeatedly die.

I think Nightmare, for most people, is a one way ticket to game reloading hell,

and there have been many review demos and let's play's emerging to show that some people are having their ass handed to them on Normal.

I don't think Nightmare is straight-forward as a rule, even if it is straight-forward to you.

Kudos for your challenging play though.

(Hmmm 'Sonofajockey', I quite like that...)

I would recommend Hard or Nightmare. Low level Nightmare in DAI is a bit more forgiving than low level nightmare in DAO. I am playing on nightmare because I want every achievement on my first character. Some of the boss fights I've had to have Varric as the last man standing use stealth and disengage so I could run away and nope out of there. If you get far enough away your party revives on your survivor, then heal up, and you can go back to the boss and continue to whittle him/her down. Doesn't always work and sometimes I'll wipe but it's fun and provides just enough of a challenge to really make me think about my builds and tactics.

I recommend nightmare. It's not nearly as tough as it was in the beginning of DAO. I'm at 21 hours and have wiped twice. I don't find it easy but you can beat out most fights with proper CC and barrier use. I don't find myself having to create choke points in the game like I had to in the other two.

Just a note though, I do play a Mage inquisitor, and from what I can tell, it makes the game somewhat easier.

It depends on what class you want to play and/or how much time you want to spend in tactical cam.

You can always change the difficult setting later. Start with hard is a good general advice.
