Ok, first of all I apologise if I am coming across as a total 'noob' here, but I'm frustrated and wondering if someone can help.

I am trying to avoid the spoiler forum so I thought I would post here.

Basically I have reached a point in the game where I can choose which area I would like to explore next (from quite a long list). How do I know which one to go to next? My understanding is that each area has 'suggested levels' and enemies don't scale to your level, but I can apparently only see what those levels are by spending power. I don't want to spend power on an area I know is going to be way above my level and so I won't want to go there, that just seems wasteful. Also I don't want to go to an area now that just happens to be appropriate for my current level, only to find myself overlevelled for another area I should have gone to earlier (I am already overlevelled for the Hinterlands for example - and I haven't nearly finished all the quests there).

Is there a list of what the suggested levels are by area? Anyone know? Have I got this all wrong and should I just go to whatever feels right by the story?

Confused...

Bah, don't worry about metagaming so much and just go wherever you want.

Ye, dont worry to much. From what I've seen so far each zone has a very wide level range. For example in Hinterlands, even tho its the first open zone, there are some rifts / quests for level 12, which is pretty high considering you start Hinterlands at about level 3/4. So my guess is you'll have to go back and forth between the areas. I have already moved to Storm Coast with still a LOT to do in Hinterlands, but most stuff in Hinterlands now is a bit to high level for me (still level 7). So in a few levels I'll just go back to Hinterlands and do the higher level quests.

Power points are quite easy to come by if you spend a little time doing sidequests so I wouldnt worry too much. Just go wherever you want to go :P

PS: the only zones you can travel to where you can see a recommended level range are the story specific quests/zones, so as long as you are on par with those as they come along, you should be fine going to any area that opens up for you on the war table.

Alrighty, thanks for the advice, I guess I should stop being an obsessive planner and just enjoy it. :)

Thanks for that tip about the story specific zones, I didn't realise that - very helpful.

Ya the thing with dragon age is it can get stressful with all the sidequests on your map but you have to learn to let go and just literally do what ever you want. I am going to get a good chunk of side quests done before I move on with the story in the Hinterlands. As for the level gap, if you run into an enemy 4 levels above you just get GTFO and make note to go back, there is no shame in doing so.

My advice is to do the main entry quest in any zone then play along the perimeter then fill in the center.  This usually completes or tags everything.  This is Sandbox advice overall not just DA:I.
