I'm planning to upgrade my computer for ME2 and switch from WIndows XP to Windows 7.

Is there anyway I can keep my ME1 saves at all?
Hows does the ME2 importing work?
Does it open up a dialog where I can locate my ME1 save games?

Or do I have to save my ME1 saves -> install W7 -> Install ME1 -> transfer back saves -> install ME2.

Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Um, your saves would be on your HDD. There's no reason why you can't simply copy and paste the save folder to your new computer (in fact, I believe that's how you're supposed to do it anyway for ME2, the config utility will ask you where your save games folder is and take you to it where you can copy the contents to the ME2 save folder IIRC).

If you're not upgrading the HDD then it shouldn't be a problem, but if you are then simply copy the files and store them somewhere safe and then put them back on your new HDD. It might be worth reinstalling ME1 on your new HDD to see if the save games have transferred over correctly, just to make sure, but I doubt that's truly necessary.

Sorry i didn't mention earlier.. My W7 upgrade would be a fresh one. I'm gonna move my important data to a USB drive and reformat my HD.

Hopefully the config utility would do the things you just mentioned and save me from reinstalling ME1 again. Thanks a lot stofsk

Worst comes to worst, you would just make a folder layout that mimics the ME1 layout without reinstalling the game. Plop your ME1 saves where the game would expect to find them. And boom, off you go. :)

Just make a copy of your My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Save folder on that USB drive you're backing stuff up to, then put it back in after you've re-installed ME on Win7.
