According to the EA help page, you should be able to destroy items to break them down into components: "Items you don't want anymore can be broken down into raw materials again so can make newer, better, shinier stuff. Be sure to remove any upgrades before you destroy items though."

I have tried to use "Destroy" to accomplish this, but I do not see any sort of confirmation that what I did got any results. Is there any way to see what an item breaks down into?

Iirc you can only break items down into components in multiplayer.

In the SP campaign you can only sell or destroy excess items.
