I'm curious about Varric's negative card and if the way we heard it was triggered was actually how it is triggered. I didn't do the thing for it to be the negative (or what I thought was the thing) but his card just turned negative in my game anyway. I wonder if I missed something, or if someone knows something I don't?

I don't let him keep the lyrium in any of my Keep saves and he even mentioned in the game that it was destroyed. Also, I saved Hawke.
I'm terrified I did something wrong with him somewhere, but he isn't acting strange or anything so... I don't know...

I got it when I talked to Bianca and done the mission on the wartime..No idea why it changed all of a sudden as Varric didnt even say anything to me and still acted normal.

I noticed it right after I talked to Bianca and got Varric's personal mission. (Dorian's changed to a dark one at the same time also which I really don't understand since I had done his personal mission awhile ago and he is officially my Dragon Age version of Garrus
)
I wondered if it changed since I took them into the Fade with me, but Blackwall's is still the same so I really don't know.
Maybe it changes again after you finish his mission?

What happened with the Grey Wardens?
You said you saved Hawke, did you banish the Wardens or let them stay?
I believe if Hawke stays behind you have to banish the wardens if Stroud/Loghain/Allistair stay behind you have to let them stay to not have his card change, but that is just speculation on my part from reading the guide and how Varric reacts to the decisions.

I had Stroud stay behind (Heh not even a hard choice) and then let the Grey Wardens stay (much to apparently the entire team's, beside's Blackwall, disappointment). Hawke went off to tell the other Warden's about what happened and Varric and I talked about how it was a miracle she survived and how he was glad he didn't have to tell Fenris face to face what was going on and where she had gone.

Varric should have approved the decision.
I am starting to think the card changes may be unavoidable.....

Hmm. Now I'm curious as to how you get the other ("Good")card options.

Hmm... same with my Varric, no red Lyrium, Hawke saved, Wardens Allies, but his card became all dark and broody.
Maybe it's a bug.

It actually changes again. I discovered that after completing his quest. ![]()

This just happened to me.
I didn't let varric keep the red lyrium, and his brother is in the madhouse.
I let hawke live and took Varric with me into the raw fade (stroud died)
I let the wardens join the inquisition.
Yet his card turned to an extremely depressing depiction of himself kneeling with nasty red shite going on behind him.
Maybe I can get it to change if I finish the red lyrium choices? Or is it possibly based on approval? I've done nothing seriously wrong to get him to dislike me.

I got the dark card after i left Hawk to die in the Fade. I expected Varric to leave, but I think I had enough approval - he didn't leave Inquisition!!! I (choose to hug him in dialog options after Fade quest).
But the card changed to third, good one after i completed quest with Bianka.

It seems to change regardless, then it changes again to him playing cards after the Wicked Grace scene.

Yea, it changes to the negative red card no matter what after "Here Lies the Abyss", no matter who you left in the Fade. The card is supposed to be depicting Varric's guilt for what has transpired since DA2. He blames himself for the problems with Corypheus (If it wasn't for him and Bartrand they would have never found the Red Lyrium, if it wasn't for him hunting down the Carta thugs coming after Hawke in Legacy they wouldn't have freed Corypheus, and so on...). You see a lot of the guilt he carries when you talk to him. And that is what the card is representing. Because now, on top of all that, the Warden or Hawke got left in the Fade presumably to die. And the fate of the Grey Wardens in Orlais. He sees it as more blood on his hands.
The card changes after the quest with Bianca. He was able to let some(if not all?) the guilt he's been carrying.

I always assumed it was left over from the whole "save the village" mission they showed in one of the demos, but ended up being cut. The card bears a striking resemblance to the shot of Varric we see at the end of that quest, and I figured it was originally meant to trigger if you chose to let the village burn; but became just his general "high disapproval" card after the mission was cut.
Either way, as someone pointed out, the card will automatically change to that when you first talk to Bianca, and after you finish his personal quest it'll change to a more positive one.
