Greetings to you, kind people of these vast forums.

It has come to my attention that male elf model may suffer from narrow shoulders and arms glued to its ribs.

I could not play DA:I for more than few minutes and this is why I'm asking you for an explanation. What is exactly wrong with the male elves? What drive people' discomfort. If it is possible, then please, present me with ocular proof.

EDIT:

Not my character, but that's what they all look like when I make a male elf. It's really turned me off from the game, and outside of cutscenes it basically looks like the shoulders are embedded in the chest cavity.

Maker be praised! What has happend to this poor lad? It looks as if Vejita kicked in both of his arms. These are some serious fractures. Weirdly, Solas seems to be fine.

Thank you for your effort. If you find more images like this then please, do not hesitate and present them to me.

This may not be a bug, but the overall look of the male elf seems so weak. I know they are a downtrodden race; marginalized and ostracized by most of the world, but still.

Besides their negative body language, the overall frame is that of a skinny girl or 10 year old boy. Hard to fee like much of a bad ass with the body of a short super model.

Are elves supposed to be lithe, svelte, ethereal perhaps? Sure. But that doesn't mean looking like bone-thin waifs.

Is there going to be the possibility of user-made mods where the body can be modified? I play elves in every game I can, but I just can't stomach these guys any more. I am stuck playing a boring human.  ;)

Other than that whining rant, great job, BioWare!  :D

I don't mind the design, the implementation is the problem. As others have noted, the arms are too stiff and the small shoulders causes significant problems with clipping. The most annoying problem I've run into is the clipping. Unless you are using the smallest armors possible, the hands merge straight into it.

Despite those problems, I love EVERYTHING else they've done. The dialogue reflects that I'm an elf. The story reflects that I'm an elf. The entire world has special content that reflects it. That is something I never got out of Dragon Age: Origins, despite the fact that the Dalish are largely not trusted outside of their own community. It's amazing for my immersion. If they could get down the fact that their model is just too stiff, this would be my absolute favorite fantasy RPG.

Please, can you be so kind and post screenshots of the clipping and 'broken arms' model syndrome.

I have no problems with their sizes. The things that I'm speaking about here are model bugs. I could not test elves properly (with more armour variations) because I have a quite busy week. Rumors have made me aware of the issues.

I'm away from my console for the weekend. If anyone wants to help you out, have them slap on the Medium Armor of the Dragon. Your hands go right through the tasset.

I will keep it in mind. Thank you for your answers. Rumors seem to be true. Maybe I should keep my hands away from the elven Inquisitor.

Honestly man, I wouldn't let that discourage you. If you can get over the graphical problems, I'm really enjoying the Dalish Inquisitor's storyline. For me, as it's the story I've crafted, it's a story about humans and non-humans alike creating something new from the perspectives of those who make it up. It's about realizing that Thedas belongs to everyone and petty trifles are doing nothing but dividing everyone.  It's a brave outlook for a Dalish elf to take, considering that the Dalish seem to largely avoid contact with other cultures, and it's really cool to see how everyone evolves around you being an elf.

Take that for what you will. I'm really pleased with what I'm getting out of it. The clipping is irritating, but I don't focus on it. Play the race you want because the race exclusive content is loads better than it has ever been before. I mean if immersion reasons are behind why people won't play the elf (ie. "I can't be awesomely powerful with this kind of body type"), then just don't play a warrior. Rogues and mages don't exactly have to be beef cakes or anything.

Thank you for kind and expansive words of encouragement. The thing is that I spend quite a lot of time looking at my character, sighing over my superiority (like every proper mage should). Broken arms do not help immersion.

I didn't notice any problems to be honest.

Weaker than human for sure, but it's not THAT bad. There's definately some muscle on those bones. Look: (picture of my Inquisitor from image thread)

fu6jkn.png

The arm is quite thin, but not overly thin.

I don't have the better picture for now, and this one is quite good, because it shows a bare arm.

And they're not that short - around the height of female humans.

It is all pretty and shiny but look at his arm, it looks broken

I'm not seeing it to be honest. I can somewhat see it on the screenshot in the second post, but not here. If you're refering to the space between triceps and elbow, than it's completely normal - it's just how muscles look on the arm.

You have a muscle, than a region where there's barely any muscle and then an elbow.

Unless you're refering to something else?

I'm referring to the space between triceps and elbow. It bends too much. Do you have more screenshots, in different armours?

Someone should post his elf without his body armour to really show the source of the problem. Elven males here have super-slim shoulder girdle and almost concaved chests. And what's interesting, solas's body for example looks ok although slim and still elvish while player's elf character looks so depressingly weak and ill and fragile.

These images illustrate what I am referring to. The arms angle in oddly and the build is almost comically small...front and back. I am not saying they need to be built like Ahnold, but still!

Very much odd angle, and yes, his shoulders are way too narrow

First time I saw male elf in casual clothing my first reaction was not too tiny shoulder, arms or size of head compared to body but..."Wait are these 'Elf Man-b@@bs' or are my eyes playing trick on me!?".

Yes, shoulders:head ratio is atrocious. It looks as if his heavy head will bring him down. Hopefully BioWare will find time to fix this issue.

This problem seriously makes me mad. I love playing as an elf because i love the underdog story, but its just so hard to get into the story when every cut scene my arm is sinking into my ribs. I've been playing Farcry 4 until they fix this because I really want to experience my first run through the way I want to, with a male elf mage, the most discriminated against character I feel I can create.

They don't consider it an issue though. It was a stylistic choice that began with DA2 (big head, weird narrow body, weirdly narrow shoulders) It looks even more pronounced on male elves than in DA2 though (the females were more extreme like in DA:I). I've been complaining about it since DA2 and I'm sad to see it return I'm DA:I especially since Sera and Solas look normal (they have unique models). My elf's biceps clip into his ribcage because his shoulders are recessed and his arms clip through his hip armor for the same reason. I equip shoulder widening armor even if it's not as good (who would have thought the infamous BioWare shoulder pads of doom would come in handy?) but sadly in Skyhold his deformity is on full display and my mind ever so helpfully dubbed him "Messere Baby-Shoulders" >_<

Pi2r Epsilon made this post http://forum.bioware...-in-next-patch/

And I totally agree with him, why cant Male Elf PC have a model similar or at least close to Solas' model size? (Shoulder width, arm size in particular)

I have not gotten my hands on the game yet as my Deluxe Edition copy is still in transit from amazon, but I've watched a whole lot of dialogue scenes from gameplay vids folks uploaded on youtube.

The body language Male PC Elves potrays that of a cornered puppy lowering its head in shame or fear while its owner is looming over it, hand raised to strike the poor puppy as it looks up in dread. Or, a child, tucking arms behind the back and dropping his/her chin whilst being scolded by parents. (E.g 25:00 minute mark )

I love the Dragon Age universe and the elves in it, and I get that elves are ill-treated, looked down upon and etc. throughout thedas. If we were playing as a city elf, the cornered puppy-like body language might suit just fine. But then again, the PC is Dalish as well as the Inquisitor who will bring order to the world. Shouldn't both points pronounce a more confident rather than an insecure body language to the Male PC Elf Model? Like the excellent and on-point job they did with Solas' character design?

I do hope that this is a bug that will be fixed in the coming patch, and also for the Keyboard/Mouse mapping to be something like in DA:O and DA:II. Both hopefully before my game arrives :) If not, then I'll be forced to play a human or wait for a mod to fix the PC Elf model... Nonetheless, I believe this is going to be a great game and I'm about to start clawing my eyeballs out at all the beautiful gameplay graphics I am watching that I have to wait to experience myself :(
