Its really the lore and the sandbox world building that Elder Scrolls stands on. Its the ability to just do whatever the fark you want in a world that persistently exists regardless of whether or not you are present. Because the world is a simulation. Characters have their own schedules, there's day/night cycles, weather patterns, random monster attacks, etc. Its a different kind of rpg from a party based rpg like Baldur's Gate or Dragon Age. Skyrim is more "I wonder what's over there" or "I wonder what happens if I do this". Dragon Age is more "I wonder what happens next" or "I wonder what I should do here". If that makes any sense.

The holidays here in Canada end tomorrow, fyi. Only Christmas Day and New Years Day are statutory holidays here. Bioware seems to have at least a skeleton crew about today just for the holiday update stuff ( Everyone in multiplayer got a free large loot chest for example and their Twitter is active ). So at least one warm body was around. Hopefully the rest come back in tomorrow.

I have never really treated TES game like this. Open world came later, in 2k+.

I see. So  I have missed a chest! Now it is time for them to put that patch, I would like it before a new year but I guess, with a proper dosage of spirit magick I can run well a little btit longer. But really, now is an excellent time, we have 2 free days! + weekend and it is paradise.

No it didn't. Elder Scrolls games have always been open world games. The only exception was...Redguard I think it was called? But that was third or fourth in the series. But prior to that and after that it was always open world. Hell, the open world use to be even more ridiculous then it is now ( Boats in Daggerfall <3 ). I clocked an embarrassing amount of hours in Daggerfall back in highschool. Just aimlessly wandering the world. >.>

I think you get a free chest the first time you play multi as well if I remember right. So you should have two waiting for you.

Well, it was open world but it was not at the same time. Morrowind I think was even advertised as truly open world in a handcrafted sense. The previous ones had maps generated, can't tell for sure, it has been ages since I've touched it.

Morrowind is actually the smallest Elder Scrolls game oddly enough. Daggerfall did use random terrain generation ( but still had topgraphy and climate parameters for different areas ), but the world map was just over 160 square km and had over 15,000 locations and 750,000 characters. In retrospec it was completely and utterly insane in scope. Seeing as it let you basically just wander all of Tamriel.

Daggerfall is actually freeware now if you want to go back and relive the pixelated glory and the veeeeeeeeennngeaaaance. -.-

Since I've spent the past two days playing Dragon's Dogma for the first time I have to ask- why did I not hear about this game before mid this year? Why did I not play it when it came out? Why is it not upheld as the best game ever? It's soooo good!

I can agree that DAI has been somewhat inspired by the game but that the application of the inspiration is shallow at best. And how much better would DAI be if they applied the DD mechanics? Infinitely better. Like, thanks for the jump Bioware, but why not give us a climb too? And imagine scaling a dragon leg to kill it instead of kiting around the silly things legs...And the pawns carrying their crippled mates to you so you can revive them? Bless their little hearts! lol! God, I'm loving this game so much (in spite of the PS3 graphics) I hardly even care about DAI now.

But I have, in quiet moments, pondered why the game is blah for me. And it starts with the Lie of the Elf, but I might have been able to play as a human if it weren't for the other issues. Like the Banter Bug- I had it. ANd sure someone on Reddit (not Bioware, of course) came up with a workaround- but FFS having to clear every. sinlge. completed quest (why the hell they are asterisked for you to bloody check in the first place is beyond me since, you know they are completed) do the same for the million and one bits of crap you pick up that create asterisked codex entries, then travel back to skyhold to the godforsaken war table if you want to travel anywhere, rest a dozen times on quests... Really? And where is this game being fun again? Seriously it was as full of inane and redundant 'necessities' as the most boring office job I've ever done in the end.

And I couldn't even be a smexy elf boy because they gave us hideously broken models.

BOO!

Meanwhile, back in Dragon's Dogma... I've given both my PC and his hottie pawn elf ears and am having a marvellus time watching them run around. Sasfe to say Falen the pawn has a monster crush on Llandriel already...and since he has been custom made to fit Llandriel's tastes and will obey him unconditionally... if only there were mods lol! :P In a perfect world CD Projekt Red would handle the port to PC ...and then do a whole new game based on the Elves from the Witcher series...

A girl can dream... :)

Yes, but it was truly open world, with strong accent on the world. It was not just randomly generated mass but carefully crafted land. I guess hm what is the nam eof that game, the one heavily pixelated hm minecraft? There are big worlds too but it is all well, random and shallow. Yes I've heard about it being free, but I would not dare to go back there. We have all the lore informations available on the internet, I would not want to test my skills against that game, again.

I know right? I only recently discovered it earlier this year and had the same reaction. I have no idea how it seems to have slipped under the radar.

Dragon's Dogma. It's AWESOME!

Now let's just take a moment to imagine it running on a high end gaming pc... (since I, you know, bought one to play DAI but can't because of the trashy elf model */ gratuitous on topic segue*)

Ahhhh...what a lovely dream it is.

No seriously, I want this game on PC badly. I was having my arse handed to me by a gang of bandits during the twilight hours-and I'd run out of lantern oil so that was fun lol!- and a goddam Chimera just randomly cantered up the mountain side and slapped me on my butt lol! I was like F****!!!! and running and dying. Yeah, I died, but it was so much fun dying like that! And all this on a ps3 with the ahh... less than optimised graphics.

Dear Gaming Gods, I am willing to roll over and take the DAI hideous elf sucker punch on the chin if you grant me this wish. :)

I will thank Bioware and their lies for one thing though, I have been trawling for a game to give me the 'great looking elf' fix they promised but failed to deliver  and have turned up Black Desert. Now, I've never been one for MMORPGs in the past. but this one I might just be able to get on board for. Stunning elf options via the most amazing character generator and an interesting looking world with just the best looking horse combat ever. (I have owned and trained dressage horses my whole life as well as tinkering with mounted combat re-enactment) and awesome monsters. F2P in Korea right now and coming to western countries next year if anyone else is interested...

Although, it would still be nice if Bioware fixed the elves in this game too.

Maybe they didn't advertised has much as EA/Bioware did for their games also it's a new IP.

It's all about how much money you put for advetisement and you will be surprised that some companies do invest more than 1 millions just for that.

Also, yes mmorpgs do have the most beatifull player characters that I've ever seen.

They always push back the limits of character creator.

New IP? I don't understand what you mean?

I must have been scrounging around the wrong MMORPGS because I haven't been overly impressed with the look of any until now. I've seen screenshots of a male elven ranger from BD and I swear I nearly wept with joy... If only I could have had a rogue like that in DAI. You know, like they promised.

And on the subject of rogues- why on earth did they remove the ability to swap between primary and secondary weapons during a fight? That's another thing I am enjoying about DD by the way, but it isn't like we couldn't do that in DAO so why change it in DAI? Step backwards much?

Male elf PC has gynecomastia, right?

And yes, in addition to his anorexia/heroin habit, your male elf has a perky set of moobs.

Not cool Bioware, not cool.

They are actually pretty much flat like a board.

I dont know if anyone else has noticed this but the male elf arms look fine in the intro tutorial section at haven... but just as you finiish off the pride deamon and close the breach when you wake up in the bed your wearing diffrent armour... and your arms look broken... put on the same armour you had in the begining and your arms are broken. i concluded that there is some kind of glitch with the charachter model that comes after the pride demon fight.

Yeah this is definately a bug. Which, on the one hand, is better than it being some whacky design idea--bugs get fixed, if they can be. On the other hand, it still sucks until bioware fixes it.

All I wanted for christmas was a male elven mage... :(

What is terrible too, no matter the armour, your arms remain glued to the ribcage. We are approaching the 6th week after release. Fix, where are you?

Ha ha...ha....ha......................... You are going to just love the ending of that game.

But god, Dragon's Dogma was so awesome. Wonderful game. Need to pick it back up and play the Dark Arisen content sometime.

Anyway, any news, guys? I've been sort of offline, playing GOOD games the past two days. I mean...wow, Pikmin 3 is to addictive. And Hyrule Warriors...I'm in Zelda heaven.

Doing a terrible job of playing a new game of DAI, aren't I?

:) elfairs, love it! I lol'd. I'm a sucker for a good pun!

I've all but given up hope myself. What little I have left I give to the modders for safe keeping...maybe by the time the game has it's first anniversary we will have a 'great looking elf'.

Tried playing with my human again because I want to finish it but... I dunno, the weird skin tone thing is killing me and I just can't re-roll yet again. Dribs and drabs between DD missions maybe? Of course, if my elf had unbroken arms, I'd just pick him up and have a blast but as he currently is.. No.

We killed a giant today in DD- OMG! Scaling that thing and slashing away was beyond awesome! :) I'm starting to crush on my pawn now, he gets so distraught when my arisen dies lol! So sweet!

Haven't played Pikmin 3 but loved the first two, I'm currently downloading Tera so I can make an elf and a Castanic, can't wait.
