Buying them, I assumed that “The Stolen Throne” and “The Calling”, written by David Gaider, would be good books. With what he’s done as Lead Writer of DA: O, it only made sense, right?

But I’m glad to say that the experience went far beyond my greatest expectations.

After “The Stolen Throne”, I couldn’t wait to read “The Calling”, and it did not disappoint. The level of emotion and depth in every scene is truly overwhelming. You feel deeply for every character, and the dialogues are candy for the brain. I’ve never read a book this fast, so eager was I to discover all of the facts hidden within this wonderful story – and I read a lot. Amazingly enough, I found myself laughing and crying heartily throughout my reading. Yes, I know how this sounds; but I assure you that if you read both books, you’ll feel it too. Trust me.

More than once, I actually had a feeling that can be compared to the end of the movie: “The Sixth Sense.”
As information was revealed, I was like: OMG!!! OMG!!! Image IPB
It was wonderful.

The books are, in fact, the other half of the game. Together, they tell a story (or parts of a story, as more will surely be given away in “Awakening”, and perhaps, “hopefully”, in other books). So, if you are a DA: O fan, you owe it to yourself to read the books.
Just make sure you have a box of tissues handy before you start. Image IPB

They are amazing I so agree . It makes the whole game so much better. Not that is bad in any way. But the books are great . I could read them again to be honest.

You've pretty much expressed my sentiments exactly. I've read Stolen Throne in it's entirety and started The Calling today, and I don't wanna put it down. I love pretty much anything that expands on a world I like: Dragon Age, Forgotten Realms (Neverwinter Nights stuff specifically), Star Wars, etc.

Well when i read the Stolen Throne at the hotel and on my way back from the builder event 2 last summer. i wasn't impressed it's good fantasy but it doesn't beat many other great fantasy writers. the middle of the book was best, the beginning was average at best, and the end was rushed, one chapter that basically rushed through the whole war when he could easily have published several books covering the time period. my intresst of the calling is therefore low.

I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say this:

I understand what you mean, but trust me, "The Stolen Throne" needed to be written as such in order to introduce  "The Calling". Simply put, the story of "The Stolen Throne" had to be told before "The Calling", and it had to be told as it was done.
Just read it, and tell me after if I'm wrong. Image IPB It's worth it, really.

Both the books are great i went through them very fast just because they were easy and fun to read. And it gives an extra dimension to the game. Specially now with awakening coming.

I got the DA books for Christmas and thoroughly enjoyed them. Any fan of DA should get a real kick out of them.

I think Mr Gaider hit a good level of writing to appeal a broad section of the fanbase It is somewhere between the blandness of Tolkien but above the deluded ramblings of crap like Meyer.

A great couple of books to crank through on a snowy day.

I'm only going to promise to read these books if you promise to read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

But as it is, Terry Pratchett's been keeping me going in between Bioware releases.

they are good, but they seem to borrow too many names from the WOT, such as the blight, logain, the taint that comes with the blight. After reading the first WOT (thats wheel of time) book, it makes DAO seem like a poor mans WOT story. Albeit the DAO books are good, they are a bit sad, and the reasons that make them sad dont make sense.

EDIT: SPOILERS:

such as loghain manipulating maric into killing katriel ... i didnt see much sense behind that, although the calling made a bit more sense, the "grey" setting and choices the characters made, felt forced. And some of the characters miss whats in front of them so much i think most of them are just crazy. I'll be hesitating before buying the third book, if a third comes out.

I agree, though I still liked the book.

The Calling was better, and had much better pace, especially in the beginning. I didn't even want to put down the book to play the game, at least not until around half-way in the book, but by then I was so curious I had to keep reading anyway, and the ending made me hurridly read through the entire thing because it made me stand on edge.

Books rarely do this to me.

People, please keep spoilers out of this thread.

I did write it in "No Spoilers Allowed" for a reason... :/

Just start another thread in "Spoilers Allowed" please if you want to discuss the stories, although I think you shouldn't just in case someone falls on it by error and hasn't read the books yet...

I have only read The Calling so far, (still waiting for the Stolen Throne to arrive) and I loved it. I finished it in 3 days while reading only at nights. Now I'm just waiting for a message from the local bookstore and I'll be there to grab Stolen Throne in a heartbeat. I really hope Gaider or someone else will write us more of these!

Enjoying Throne right now. Its no work of art but it really helps me understand the Game plot and story better. Knowing the history of the rebellion and especially Loghains part in it and how it affected him made for a much better play through of the game. My first play through was before reading the book and Loghain was just another bad guy to be defeated. My 2nd playthrough I felt completely different. Loghain was the hero of ferelden! I was really affected by his actions the second time around. I liked him alot.

Stolen Throne = Equal to books that you can buy for other games. I would rank it as average.

The Calling = Much better than the other one, because it goes deeper into feelings, minds of the characters. But its still far away from a great tale.

I've not read them, but I've no doubt they're good. BioWare has a real knack for hiring game writers who can also bang out really good novels. I enjoyed the 2 Mass Effect novels, and although it wasn't by a game writer IIRC, I enjoyed the Baldur's Gate novel.
