So here I was, happily traipsing along the Storm Coast as I did in the Hinterlands. I was exploring caverns, solving constellation puzzles (a great addition BTW) and having just a grand old time going in the opposite direction of some rather terrifying noises.

After an hour or so, I figured I'd go back to camp since I only had 1 potion left, and Bull looked like he needed a drink, but low and behold a breach catches my eye. I'll just stop this up really quick I said. It'll be as easy as the rest of them I said...yeah...

So I have Bull chug that last potion and I head towards the breach. I stealth and run by the enemies as I usually do to begin sealing it, so my party can distract them a bit. Surely they can hold out for 5 seconds while I drain this thing, right? About half way through the sealing process I hear SOLAS!!. Not a second later: VARRIC!! I think to myself: "what the hell?!" As I pan the camera around to see what happened, my Broquisitor receives the godliest pimp smack of his life, sending him into the fetal position. Needless to say, I had Bull get the hell outta dodge lol.

I restocked and came back to results that weren't much better BTW. So yeah, anyone else had a moment similar to this yet? I found it quite amusing actually.

Yup, same thing at a rift. Everythings going fine until a level 12 desire demon shows up an annihilates my entire party behind me with no effort.

I don't know if I'm really bad at this game or what, but I'm playing on casual and I've had a LOT trouble with every single fight I've come across so far.

Yes but in the sense that it's a after end game boss to fight or you could lower the difficulty of the game I refuse to lower the game from hardmode but even still trust me those who like to explore will find many things others won't. I am level 16. 50 hours in.

Oh, I have had numerous experiences like this while running around in different areas.  There have been quite a few times where I have wandered into an area that I had absolutely no business being in.  There have been a couple of times I have been able to see what is ahead, examine the types of monsters/enemies that are lying in wait, and then decide to simply go around them or turn back and go a different direction.  But normally I am so busy running towards the next thing I stumble upon and I don't realize I have stumbled into a much bigger situation then I was prepared for.

Yes it was a rift in the Hinterlands that's a level 12 rift and I was level 6... I think your imagination can pretty much solve how it all played out... until I figured out I was severely underleveled, I initially felt like I was horrible at combat, but I owned every other encounter so I was like... well maybe I mistakenly up'd the difficulty or something. It was hilarious... Oh and I was livestreaming as well

Oh and the level 12 dragon in the Hinterlands... I was level 7 or so and yep you guessed it... got owned

I was also happily exploring in the Hinterlands.  I hear a sound - must be a dragon I thought.  I am in a cave with an overhang.  I am standing there looking at the wonderful dragon and surroundings.  "We are safe here.  Good cover." I think.

Dragon starts to make his attack run. Then blam half my party is hit with a fire ball.  I did a Monty Python "run away" and got the crap out of there.

Have gone back and am still too low level to take that thing on.  The bad part is i need that area for a quest.  lol

Playing on hard, I can barely scrape by in a fight to close a rift with enemies 3 levels higher than me.  But it's a real struggle!  Once I did a rift 4 levels higher.  But no luck so far on 5 levels or more above my party.

It does give me a rush too! I love it. In games like this, it's hard to get too frustrated, all you have to do is adjust your tactics and find what works. I love it!

I had this in the hinterlands.....pretty much the same thing, thought "Oh, it's a Hinterlands rift, my lvl 6 Quizzy should have no problem...."

My team and I walk into the box canyon where the rift is and *bam* before I can even lock on a demon to attack.....we're all dead.....Despair Demons how I hate thee.

So I think, Let's try that again.....full health, full potions.....

Second time goes a little better, I beat the first wave of demons, work on reviving companions when they fall, get through the first attempt to weaken the rift.....

Then the second wave hits, *bam* dead again.....

It's at that point I actually look to see the demons are lvl 12......yeah, I'll be coming back a little later.

In the Hinterlands, I came across a Breach that I guess was a bit too strong for me. A few of my followers were knocked out right away.

I freaking love this system.

...solving constellation puzzles (a great addition BTW)

Sorry to temporarily go off topic, but can you give any further thoughts about these? I've been avoiding spoilers, so I haven't seen much about these other than they exist and I think are spread around various locations. Are the puzzles themselves fun? Difficult? Do they increase in difficulty as you go along? Could it become frustrating? Is there a purpose beyond completing a collection (I don't need to know what it is, if there is)?

The constellation puzzles are a cool little "hey, look what I found" moment in the game that can unlock some pretty good items; at least, that has been my experience so far.

The puzzles themselves aren't too challenging, but they do increase in difficulty and because solving one leads to the discovery of another one elsewhere in the area, it spurs you into exploring new areas of the environment as you go.  They aren't as challenging as the areas they may be in because they could be posted in an area on the map where there are higher level enemies lying in wait for the wandering fool to come along.  I myself having been that wandering fool on a couple of occasions.

Ha! I did the exact same thing there, even sang 'when danger reared it's ugly thread the Herald turned her tail and fled! Brave, brave, brave, brave Herald!' after it dropped the fireball on me.

I agree. Not having leveled challenges to the player is a great shout-out to old school mechanics, and keeps the regions relevant after you've done the main quests in the area. DAI is a great hybrid of old-school stuff and streamlined playability.

I accidentally ran into the High Dragon in the Hinterlands at level 4.
Oh, and the level 12 rift in the Hinterlands at level 7.
And the level 8 rift at level 3.

So yes, a lot. Not that I hold it against the game, I think it's good there's places that are just to high a level for you.

I too have really enjoyed this system, and appreciate that you can't just play an area to death and move on to the next one.  It keeps each area relevant and interesting - not to mention that nagging feeling in the back of your mind that makes you REALLY want to know just what it is that they are hiding over there!

I can understand the point of just wanting to go from point A to point B without ever having to genuinely worry about the danger your character may be in if you are purely interested in the storyline.  I get it.  But, what you miss when you play this way is a feeling of connection with the character you are playing.  If the character is never in any real danger, then you have no need to modify your approach in order to ensure that he, or she, lives long enough to see the outcome.

Overall, I believe BioWare hit a pretty great mark here.  While a great amount of the open areas are able to be explored with some challenges here and there, there are also areas that may as well have a huge neon sign stating - "No, not yet, you overzealous fool - and if you continue this path, we warned you".  I log that in the back of my mind as I move elsewhere, bound and determined to meet that challenge head on when I can.
