Im laughing so hard reading this topic :D

That level 12 rift in Hinterlands is hilarious. Specially since you go there so early (if you go get your first horse straight away) and such a beautiful location, right in the lake, hey there's a good place to close a rift. And the fun part is I was so angry i got owned, that i went to claim the camp nearby, restocked and tried again, and ofc got owned again, making me feel even more powerless, but i guess many people did the same :D

I went back there later, at an appropriate level and just as I close the Rift Sera goes: "Easy hein? Pff.. Too easy. P.i.s.s.!" And I was like, shut up b**** you have no idea! You werent here before!

I love the unleveled world. I didn't have too much trouble with it since I'm used to it from the Skyrim and Oblivion mods that remove the level-scaling. I did fights moderately underleveled in the Hinterlands since I didn't want to forego the many areas with L8 enemies when I was L6. Killed a L9 mercenary captain at L7, that was hard, and I had trouble with my L6 party when I attacked a L8 bear and it was suddenly joined by three L8 outlaw rogues. Thanks to Cassandra I survived that fight.

I sneaked past some dragonlings to reach the ocularium in Shayna's Valley and collect the shards. Caught a fireball from the passing dragon that killed Solas in one hit, but could flee into the next cave before more damage was done.  Needless to say, I did not approach its lair. I also tried to close a L12 rift at L8. Not a good idea. I had to reload.

"Oh look a buffolo thingy. Let me pew pew it to dea- OH SWEET MAkER NO!!!!"

But yeah, tried to seal a rift in the hinterlands and got instawiped out by high level teleporting demons. Couldn't even run from them. Good learning experience though.

This topic is awesome!

Count me in on the rift spanking in the Hinterlands. I was happily playing along, bouncing back and forth between the main story and the side quests in the Hinterlands. I was about level 7 when I decided a good way to get power was to do the quests to close the rifts. It was all going as planned til that one in the woods with the level 12 demons wiped me out, lol. Such fun though and I finally got it done when I leveled up a bit.

I'm having a blast in the Hinterlands. The only reason I went back to the main story was so I could get to Skyhold and get my red lyrium weapons. Did that and a quest or 2 on the coast and back for more Hinterlands. Can't wait to meet up with the dragon there :D

Yes it was a rift in the Hinterlands that's a level 12 rift and I was level 6... I think your imagination can pretty much solve how it all played out... until I figured out I was severely underleveled, I initially felt like I was horrible at combat, but I owned every other encounter so I was like... well maybe I mistakenly up'd the difficulty or something. It was hilarious... Oh and I was livestreaming as well

Oh and the level 12 dragon in the Hinterlands... I was level 7 or so and yep you guessed it... got owned

Yeah, I found that sucker with a level 4/5 party. And I thought, what the hell, we made it through those level 8 lyrium smuggler dudes alright. But, no.

I love that these areas exist.

I must admit that this issue annoyed me at first, being used to level-instances in my current other games..

I've come to love the fact that I have to ....very carefully... scout ahead, whenever I enter a new area, since I know for a fact, that anything can happen..

I'd still like some indicator on the War Map as to at least the starting level of any given zone.. That would help with the zone-jumping, as one levels up..

But heck, I assume I'll get used to that as well. ;)

I'm pretty sure the world map lists level ranges for the different areas.

It doesn't and I like it that way.

For some of the missions given at the war table, you do in fact get a level range, but not for regular areas or maps

Had just established a camp and decided to explore a tunnel. Came to the end of it and there was a glorious vista of the ocean with a tower which crumbled slightly from I did not notice what. It was a wonderful view and I stood there calmly taking it all in. Hey what it that movement to the left, giant ball of flame and a dragons head as I burn to a crisp and my faithful companions run back into the tunnel.

Yeah, last night, I took my level 4 (at the time) femQuiz into Fallow Mire. (What was I thinking?!)

We actually did OK in some areas, but had to backtrack to the camp fairly often.

I stumbled upon a rift, and tried to close it. We made it through the first couple of waves, until a freaking Revenant showed up. Good god, NOPE NOPE NOPE!! Between him and the other demons, it was impossible. I haven't even recruited any new followers, so it's still me, Cass, Solas, and Varric.

Giving up on that, I thought I'd try to save some soldiers. Got to the boss, and got pwned. Shocker.

Also, several areas in the Hinterlands are difficult for lower levels. Great bears are no joke. Especially when they bring their friends.

Sorry to temporarily go off topic, but can you give any further thoughts about these? I've been avoiding spoilers, so I haven't seen much about these other than they exist and I think are spread around various locations. Are the puzzles themselves fun? Difficult? Do they increase in difficulty as you go along? Could it become frustrating? Is there a purpose beyond completing a collection (I don't need to know what it is, if there is)?

They're connect the dots. Which I lvoe, but others may hate. There are definitely different levels of difficulty.

Uhg... bears.

Don't you love it when you are fighting one bear, holding your own, and feeling rather pleased with yourself - when out of nowhere another bear runs into the fray and throws a monkey-wrench into the whole operation?  Or better yet, vicious dogs just happen to pass by and apparently have some sort of agreement with the bear because they are definitely not there to help you out whatsoever.

Bears...

And I hear there are actual demons that I need to face...but bears are the bane of my wanderings at this point.

That first Hinterlands rift with a Despair Demon was a pita sandwich for my early game Inquisitor.

Also, I wasn't underleveled at the time, but the final fight when you first meet the Big Evil was ridiculously hard to the point that I had to turn the game down from hard to casual just to get past it.

That happened to me last night. For a moment, I thought I was playing Red Dead Redemption. (I got killed so many times by the ninja-like bears and the velociraptor-like cougars.)

Hahaha, glad I'm not the only one who ran into that Hinterlands rift and began to question their "herald-hood".

Also ran into the Hinterlands dragon REALLY early. I was watching it from afar thinking "woah, that's cool, I wonder if it's just like an event thing or if it will actually fight me... wait, where'd it go?" FIREBALL!

I had just unlocked the regions in Orlais, and at level 10 I was happily thinking of all the new locales I would cleanse of life explore and the abodes I would loot to the last penny liberate. I had loads of Power, and there's this one region where Venatori and Red Templars are working together, which is obviuously Bad News. So here I spend 20 Power, unlock the place, and proudly march forward, Blackwall at the front.

I roam around, find some tier 3 crafting materials (yay! says I) and spot a group of 3 baddies. Easy pickings, obviously. I do the usual, have my 2 mages and Varric sit back while the tank charges forward. One of the baddies was one of these brute types with huge hammers, but eh, Blackwall is tough and accumulated Guard.

First thing that happens, Blackwall (while using Shield Wall!) gets smashed to a sliver of health right through his guard, and immediately gets downed by one arrow afterwards. ''What the hell'', do I ask myself, only to go into tac cam and find out these fellows are level 16. Solas gets downed in like 2 hits, then I hit the Disengage button in panic and get the hell outta dodge.

Getting wiped by a dragon at level 4 is one thing, being sent home packing by nameless mooks is another. Lesson in humility after the fist-bumping moments in Skyhold, to be sure.

My favorite part of these encounters is running away like a coward.  GO! GO! GO!  I like the fact it doesn't scale.  It adds an extra dimension to the game.  Sometimes you just have to run like a coward. :D

Does anyone else feel super guilty at killing the bears? I always feel so bad because I'm trespassing in their home and they're just defending themselves...!
