Haha, I died for the first time today. Despair demons mean business.

Yeah, I have had this happen to me a couple times at a rift. Also, a buffalo, sorry...bruffalo...I think it was called, wiped my party once. I actually like the fact that this can happen. Gives you a reason to go back to the earlier levels of the game at a later date.

I presumed they went by the level of the monsters that came out of them. Could be wrong though.

When a dragon incinerated me, I was briefly reminded of getting BBQd by Deathwing in Cataclysm. Hey, at least I got an achievement from Deathwing ![]()

They can be targeted or "locked" if you prefer. You can see their health then.

That one breach in Hinterlands has wiped me so many times. Finally gave it the evil eye and decided I will deal with it later.
The dragon, I have made sure to just avoid at this time. First I was like cool a dragon, watching it take off and destroying some rock formation in process. Until I noticed it saw me and was making a direct path to me. Was like yep, I'm out of here.

I had this happen with one of the Rifts in the Fallow Mire. I was handling the Rift, no problem. And then the last wave spawns and it is nothing but Revnants who all procede to tear my party to pieces. And running away? Nope, they insisted that I stay, repeatedly pulling me back with chains. All they want is a hug..with their swords in their hands. And I quite enjoyed watching the Dragon in the Storm Coast fighting the tusked giant-thing to the death.

When you are close enough, the surrounding enemies will have these small red skulls appear on them in the same place where the white/yellow star marks appear on most enemies. If you see red, turn back until you have beefed up a bit.

Hit that particular rift in the Hinterlands last night. Immediately realized I was fighting for dear life. Drank three health potions in succession and each time wondered why my health was stuck at 10% until I realized I was getting zapped almost as I downed each one. Also went into tac and realized what I had stumbled into, had a chuckle, and promptly loaded the most recent save and when I re-materialized I went hard in the opposite direction of that evil rift! ![]()
Oh and keeping to topic, I was lvl 4.

I love that feeling. It really makes you get excited/nervous about exploring and helps getting into the mindset that, yeah, you really do have some work to do before you can get where you need to be.
Earlier I was reading some awesome poetry, only to be interrupted by a bear. The rest of my party got wiped out and I "NOPED" the hell out of there hahah
I think it was maybe karma for all those rams I've been killing.

What is funny about the way this game goes, at least in my experience, is right when you start getting that feeling of "BOW TO ME...BEARS!" and that you begin getting cocky, you will often times stumble upon something that takes issue with your cockiness and has no qualms about pulling your pants down around your ankles and spanking you like a red-headed step child.
Humility is a dish best served by pain, failure, and sometimes - pure humiliation.

I try and check the levels of new enemies I encounter before fighting them, so most of the times that I enter into an area I'm underleveled for I notice it before I get into a fight. The times I don't notice, I've been able to successfully run away before a wipe.

Tried to fight a rift in Sahrnia at level 12... No go, level 16s wiped me out in like 10 seconds flat! After 5 or 6 tries I noped out of there,

Well, I'm at level 12 and I've met three dragons so far. They were not gracious hosts.

I don't know if I'm really bad at this game or what, but I'm playing on casual and I've had a LOT trouble with every single fight I've come across so far.
Even though its said you only need to use tactical mode in higher difficulties, I've found myself constantly having to use it when playing on normal difficulty. Especially for breaches. I've also had many breach closings where party members are going down constantly and I have to switch control to do revives.

Yes it was a rift in the Hinterlands that's a level 12 rift and I was level 6... I think your imagination can pretty much solve how it all played out... until I figured out I was severely underleveled, I initially felt like I was horrible at combat, but I owned every other encounter so I was like... well maybe I mistakenly up'd the difficulty or something. It was hilarious... Oh and I was livestreaming as well
Oh and the level 12 dragon in the Hinterlands... I was level 7 or so and yep you guessed it... got owned
How do you know what level the rift is? I had my ass handed to me many times in the hinterlands, with no warning. Which is fine, as I should have ran when things got bad, but curious how you know.
Edit: answered above.

Those Despair Demons are a friggin nightmare. Especially when they get all constipated and then crap out a barrier.

I've run from many fights, until I leveled up. Now I'm the boss. Until I saw a high dragon. Was like, "we're not ready," and hauled ass again.
Thought I'd be fine to take on the Crestwood dragon, because I was level 13. I noped after getting her down to half health about 5 times and having her one shot my whole party. This was on casual too....
