I've chipped away a decent chunk of the Hinterland map, establishing 5 of the 6 camps, and doing a variety of side quests, exposing shards, etc.  I have loads of Power points right now (16), so I definitely have the options to take some of those ones at the war table.  However, I'm playing on Nightmare, so I want to be cautious about jumping into anything too soon.

I'm absolutely LOVING the exploration in Hinterland, and don't feel like I'm in a rush to move on until I complete these quests.  Is this a good strategy, waiting until I have some of the easier side quests before diving into story missions?

I was about the same place as you. Go to Val Royeaux, it will open up things, and not difficult.

After that for me it will be either the Coast, or the mission to save soldiers (8pts, south of Ferelden)

i spent 6 hours playing last night exploring the Hinterlands and it felt like Skyrim..... too many distractions! all i did was gather Elfroot!

All I know is I just hit level 6 and to the west I found 2 rifts with level 12 mobs that kicked my teeth in for an hour before I gave up. Watch for bears too... theyy hurt!

The story missions have level recommendations, like going to Val Royeaux is 4-7. Use those as a guide for when you should pause side questing and advance the story; the story content will be more fun and rewarding if you aren't too overleveled.

Oh, okay, so I'm not meant to absolutely clear the Hinterlands now...good to know.  I haven't seen any level 12 Rifts yet, but I still have a lot of real estate that hasn't been explored yet.  I can't believe how many little quests and collectibles there are.  And it's all pretty fun to do...puzzles, maps, collectibles with purpose.  This game is phenomenal.

Should I at least be trying to get to Redcliffe now?  Or is that higher level?  I'm level 6.

If you progress to Val Royaux can't you return to the Hinterlands to explore it later?
I went to Val Royaux as soon as I got the chance, at level 4. I can't wait to unlock other party members so I am focusing on the main stuff now but I intend to go back to the Hinterlands later.
By the way I roflstomped all enemy encounters in the Hinterlands, except for the level 12 rift. Playing on hard.

Not worth going to Redcliff until you visit Val Royaux first...
