Not realizing that the Chantry chat was the sequence that unlocked a bunch of characters, I decided to go investigate the Grey Warden sightings prior to going to Val Royaux. I thought it would be good to have a Grey Warden with me when addressing the Chantry so I went looking for one. This meant that I did not have Blackwell with me when I finished it. All that happened was that I investigated the four sites and decided *shrug* there wasn't anything to be found.

Has someone done that quest with Blackwell? What did I miss if so?

You might have just saved me a ton of time.  I thought that it was better to explore and collect companions before going to the Chantry meeting.  I just walked into the Storm Coast right before I saved last night.  When I get back to the game, I'm going to walk right back out and go to the Chantry meeting so that I can get a few new party members.  I'm pushing 10 hours of gameplay and still have my original crew.

As far as I understand, you find Blackwall after you go through the Warden camp sites. You have to do a quest for the Wardens, and then he joins you permanently. I am currently doing the Storm Coast bit, and I went there after Val Royeaux. I have gone through three Warden camp sites (I think), and still no Blackwall. I did pick up Iron Bull, though. Banter between him and Varric is pretty funny :) Also, right after Val Royeaux, I got a quest for Sera and Vivienne, but have yet to go through them.

Really? Here was my own timeline:

I did the Warden quest on Sword Coast, found nothing.

Did the Chantry interlude.

Received notice that a Warden was seen in the Hinterlands.

Went there and found him with some conscripts. Helped them fight off some brigands and after that, he dismissed the conscripts and joined my cause.

I wonder if this means the Blackwell sequence doesn't trigger one way or the other until you do the Sword Coast...

Huh... Interesting... Maybe I just did not find my way to that part of the map? It's a pretty large place, though not quite like the Hinterlands. I did claim all three camps, saw the dragon fighting a giant on the coast, and got to the only rift in the area. Oh, and I cleared the fortifications that caused Harding such trouble. No Blackwall yet... I'll have to scout around a bit more, I guess.
