I can't seem to find a way to map the abilities to specific buttons.  Is this really not possible, or am I missing the obvious again?

 

ETA: Oops, I am playing on Xbox One.

Going on memory here.

Open your menu and select the top character area (12 o'clock). Once in there, select the character you want to alter and then use the right bumper/left bumper to go to a section that lists just the abilities you have.

Look at bottom of screen and read the button presses for mapping your abilities.

Let me know how this works for you. I can give you more in depth instructions when I'm actually playing the game.
