GameStop sent me my Inquisitor's Edition on Tuesday, but it is sitting upstairs, still in the UPS box along with my Turtle Beach Elite 800 headphones. I will not play the game until tomorrow night (Friday the 21st). The reason being is that I am in the US Army working 6:30am to 5PM everyday, then coming home to do my online MBA course. Lucky me, I am off next Monday so I have a 3-Day weekend this week and come next week, I have a 4-Day weekend for Thanksgiving. I will use this time to finally dive into DAI.

It has been hurting me seeing the box in my bedroom corner everyday but school comes first and I want to get an A in this course so I need to spend this entire week to focus on this 3rd Case Study so that I can bring my Average up from 85% to at least 90% by end of Semester. Next week is a light week with only 2 days of work and a few discussion questions for class.

I know the Europeans dont play until Friday (legally) but are there any North Americans here who are in the same boat as I? Had the game since release, but have not even opened it yet due to other more important obligations?

As a former member of the US Army myself, I understand your pain.  But, more so then that - I thank you for your service and commitment to a job that few choose to do.

The game is great to play, and I look forward to hearing whether or not you enjoy it.  Hopefully, it will grant you some much needed escapism for a few hours.

Godspeed.

I am 100% sure that I will enjoy the game. Every game that Bioware has put out since KOTOR, including DA2/ME3/SWTOR I have loved. I know that there might be a few things that irks me like there apparently being no more tactics settings for party members meaning that I have to micro-manage them in combat but oh well.

Technically I could have squeezed a few hours or so into the game last night and even perhaps tonight, but I rather wait for the Friday/Weekend/Day off to play because as I will be able to relax and play it without constantly looking down at my watch to see what time it is knowing that I cant play for long cause I have to get up early the next day.

Either way, I am excited as from what I am hearing, this game can take as much as 90 hours to complete if you are that type of person, which I am as I like to play at a slower pace, take in everything, listen to every conversation, and do every sidequest.

While there are AI tactics in the game for your party, they are rather limited to two options: follow, or defend.  Follow tells your party members to openly attack whatever your character runs across while out exploring. Defend means they will leave everything alone until you attack something on the field.  There are some other minor traits in the AI you can play with, such as how often they use magic, potions, and a few other things - but it is not at all a robust system allowing you to critique exactly how they are going to react in battle.

That said, the AI in the game is pretty decent.  There have only been a few times when I have seen a party member run off into the fray and get rightfully slapped for doing so because they bit off more then they could handle on their own.  Hell, I have led my entire party off into the fray and gotten rightfully slapped for doing so more than a couple of times.  In a nut shell, while it may not be full of options, it definitely hasn't felt as if the party members become more of a hindrance then helpful.

So I can't tell my companions to do X ability if 3 enemies are clustured or do Y ability when Sera is being attacked by melee?

Unfortunately, no.  The system is not that robust.

That said, so far and in my experience at least, they have designed the party members to "learn" the battlefield and react naturally with tactics that would be most beneficial.

I have seen my rogue archer use invisibility, take the high ground, and unload and explosive shot arrow (area affect) into the cluster.  Likewise, I have seen my mage character provide the party with a temporary shield, blast the area with chain lightening, and then follow up with several individual attacks; all while moving along the perimeter of the battle and attempting to stay out of harms way.

It never feels like your party members are just in there taking licks without putting up a darn good fight.  The tactical camera adds a layer of micromanagement, should it be needed, but I have never really felt as it the party was in dire need of it.

What mode do you play on? I plan on playing on Hard difficulty.

Currently, I am playing through the normal setting of the game because I generally save my harder difficulty setting for when I am playing through a second time and am more aware of what I can, or can't, do in certain areas.  Harder difficulties may add additional need for the tactical camera/micromanagement of your party, but I have not heard/seen anything that suggests the party members are "dumbed down" at all, and therefore require you to issue orders before they are useful to the fight.

They will still be beneficial to the fight, you just may have to move them around a bit more on the battlefield to ensure they are in optimal areas of effectiveness.  At least, that is what I have gleaned from others.
