So, I am supposet to look for something shiny with them, but I have to admit, I am quite not sure how to use them, and how do I know if I actually found anything?

Go up to it and activate it.  As you look around with it, the shards will become pretty obvious.  Then they'll be on your quest map so you can find them later.

Thank you. I actually feel pretty stupid now, I didn't realise I need to double click the thing to activate it.
