Flashpoint - After a crit, it makes next spell not trigger its cooldown.

Critrical chance for a mage is typically low. You have to add in equipment to increase Crtrical change to benefit from this. Cunning adds Critical change.

Mages really shine in crowd control and combo primers, rather than direct damage. Throw down a lightning cage, panic away some troublesome Hakkonites, freeze a group of enemies to set them up for your rogues to shatter.

Combos absolutely shred enemies. Sure, it may not be you doing the big detonations, but those big detonations wouldn't be possible without your AoE combo primers like Ice Mine and Static Cage. And upgraded Static Cage (Lightning Cage) deals some serious hurt to enemies if your party members have a fast attack speed (like daggers, or even better, a tempest with daggers). Also, you can combine a Dispel with Cole's Mark of Death to spike down a barrier-heavy enemy. Or Flashpoint+Dispel to instantly erase 2 demons from a rift.

Rift Mage (lvl 28)
Rift Mage – 8 (Veilstrike+, Stonefist+, Restorative Veil, Encircling Veil, Smothering Veil, Twisting Veil)
Inferno – 5 (Immolate+, Flashpoint, Clean Burn, Pyromancy)
Winter – 7 (Winter's Grasp+, Frost Step+, Mana Surge, Winter Stillness, Frost Mastery)
Storm – 8 (Energy Barrage+, Chain Lightning+, Stormbringer, Gathering Storm, Static Charge, Conductive Current)
Skills – Veilstrike, Stonefist, Immolate, Winter's Grasp, Frost Step, Chain Lightning, Energy Barrage, Mark of the Rift

People always seem to over look Energy Barrage: 66% damage, per projectile, 12 projectiles, upgrade to 100% damage.. there is 1200 damage and a 70% chance for a Fade touched to proc.

For a staff, you will want Wrath of Lovias, Thin grip and Dragon blade.
Dragon webbing in the cloth slot, Ice dragon hide in the leather, and Ice dragon bone in the metal.
This will give you what.. A staff that gives you  50 odd critical damage, 40% critical chance and 6% attack. You could also go with stagger instead of attack. Stun lock 5% chance.

Add a stamina amulet (for mana boost), Critical chance 10% ring, Stagger on hit 10% chance ring and a belt of your choosing.. Armor go with what ever looks good. I play on nightmare and I have no issues. I just try and max out my magic resistance on dorian so I need a lot of cloth defence. Dorian has magic resistance capped. I use 2 mages. Support (Dorian), DPS (Me or Solas)

I enjoy using these early stage spells at the end game. I recommend Immolate MW on the armor, Chain lightning MW on the staff. Staff type of your choosing. I go with lightning. With a critical chance of 50%, you will basically proc flash point almost constantly. (10 second cooldown) So as long as you can keep your mana up, you do not need to worry about spell cool downs. I have never had to worry about my mana, and I do more than enough damage for nightmare. You could also take 2 more points and add them onto fire mine. The upgrade to immolate should proc on the MW effect so you do not need it in your abilities bar. You can find plenty of power amulets for free skill points. So you could also do the same for chain lightning if you desire and take barrier instead or something else entirely.

Wear what ever armor you desire. It really does not make all that much difference in the end. I Have a set for everything. Fire armor for Fire dragons, Ice armor for ice dragons, lightning armor for lightning dragons. Something with a lot of cloth utility is always good for a mage.
